No you do not need an external hardware synth module to make sounds in FL Studio. It is capable of using both VSTi and DXi synths in the newer versions. And it comes with some great software synths in the application. You simply set up your synth track to listen to your USB midi controller port and your good to go.

Welcome to HRC by the way.

When you install the USB midi keyboards drivers it will be available to you in Fruity Loops as a midi input port. That is all you will need for running the synths in FL. That and a sound card to heaer the audio with.

You simply select the USB midi port to control the synth in FL and then assing and audio output for the synth and your set to go.
