Jul 12, 2006 05:08 pm What type of band is this? Im presuming a metal band from all the double kick your using. If so, I think the kick sounds a little too boomy. It needs more click and attack in the 2 to 4 khz area. Also I didnt notice too much stereo cymbals or toms. Did you use a single overhead and tom mics?
Jul 12, 2006 05:46 pm I used three over heads, a snare mic, one bass mic on outside of drum, one on inside of bass drum next to beaters. I tried giving more attack and it sounded better, but what do you mean by click? thanks

Jul 12, 2006 08:20 pm Get rid of the third overhead. You should have 2 overheads above and on the outside of the kit just centered. If you need a third mic for picking up the toms try sitting it out front of the kit about a foot or so out and just above the kick's top height.
I think the third overhead is what is ruining the stereo image for you.
Agree on the kick treatment. Needs more punch.

Jul 13, 2006 10:55 am You have options.
Treatement in software, double mic the kick, Use a synthetic kick. I use an AKG D112 on the outer head of the bass and a Sure B52 on the inner head or beater contact point. Depending on the bass drum I can get a pretty good sound. I heard a Shure contact kick drum mic live and was very impressed, but I was very impressed with the DW kit used too. The last piece I did I used a keyboard to trigger in a bad-bum kick font.
Regardless, I definately agree with above. Ditch the 3rd overhead. Bound to cause nast imiging and phasing results.
Jul 13, 2006 09:13 pm Here is this better? I tried less compression, more attack on bass drum took out third overhead and panned a little more to the side for more stereo. I also used two mics on the bass drum like suggested.

Jul 14, 2006 04:01 pm Thats a lot better to me. The kick has a lot more definition like a metal kick should. If you or the band is not happy you could also try triggers, which is what most metal bands use for drums these days.
