hey guys i have about $1400 to spend on a computer. Ive been looking and seems like the new thing is having a dual processor. For having a strictly recording computer does it really need to have 2 processors? my impression is that 2 processors is only worth it when your multitasking which i doubt will be utilized in pro-tools...

Jun 15, 2006 09:30 pm It does appear that the newest versions of PT and PT M-Powered can take advantage of them. To what extent, I am not sure. I know Sonar 5 PE does, and as well it will run at 64 bit even in a 32 bit windows install. I cant find anything stating the PT will run 64 bit without a 64 bit OS installed.
Jul 13, 2006 04:17 pm Well, the way I look at this is the way I look at just about any computer hardware choice, especially for audio rigs: if you can easily afford it, and if it doesn't prevent you from buying something you need more, go for it. It will be much more annoying to have to buy a new audio rig in a couple of years just 'cause you skimped out on a processor.
That said, for most applications, you really can't buy a processor that won't do something you want to be able to do when it comes to audio processing. Personally, I'd buy a nice used P4 rig and get a bunch of ram and some nice big quick hard drives!
Jul 18, 2006 04:25 pm I have a Dell 6400 core duo ... very fast ... but it's causing me grief with ProTools LE on 002 rack. Seems to drop the clock ... especially if PT is using an external ADAT clock, which mine does ... here's a link to digi where they say they don't support duo core ...
