Any THD Hot Plate users?

Oops, title should be "ANY THD Hot Plate Users""
[/edit]

So after months of playing my all-tube combo incresingly louder and louder to get the "sweet spot" of power tube distortion (and oh my it is sweet!), my ears have been telling me that its time to find a better way to enjoy this sound without shaking the house apart and/or destroying my already somewhat impaired sense of hearing.

Enter the THD Hot Plate. I spent a gift certificate and some cash and bought their 4 ohm model for my YCV80. I've had it for over a week now and I've finally started to scratch the surface of its features.

Now, I know not to expect beautiful distortion at bedroom levels so my expectations are realistic. But man, at the 16db and below attenuation, there's a fizzy, buzzy overtone to the distortion that I just can't ignore. This level of attenuation would solely be used for late-night practicing, but it would be nice for it not to sound like a hornet's nest...I could just turn down the master volume on the amp and get the same effect...and I'd have $300 in my pocket to spend on other things.

So do any of you use a Hot Plate at extreme attenuation levels?

I think that MinkusMaz said he used one with a Marshall half-stack in his dorm room.

Am I doing something wrong to make it so darn fizzy? I'm talking like cheapie solid state Crate cranked up all the way kinds of fizzy. That's totally not the character of my amp.

Now at more moderate attenuation levels, I love it. I can have my 80-watt combo pretty much cranked and still be in the same room with the amp, although its still pretty damn loud. I'd only have it that loud for recording, and then I'd have a pair of headphones on which provide some attenuation for my ears, making it tolerable.

Fixed it for ya Tad.

Never heard of the THD hotplate, but I have used the Marshall Power Break unit and it worked splendidly through the entire volume range. There is another unit out there as well that is I believe from Rocktron the Sholz used called the Power Soak, not as good as the Marshall but damn close.

Others are listed below.
Groove Tubes Speaker Emulator II
Hughes & Kettner - Red Box Mk III
Harry Kolbe Soundsmith - Silent Speaker and the Attenuator
ADA MicroCAB

I have used the ADA unit as well. Works well, although I never did try it at bedroom levels as you stated. So I honestly dont know how low it would rellay go.

The Marshall unit is not cheap at all. I think it at zZounds for around $500.00 or so.

Yeah the Hot Plate is specific to the resistance of your cabinet, and retails for about $300. It was touted to be the most hi-fidelity power attenuator around so it attracted my attention. I'm still not sure what to think about it. Luckily with MF.com I have their 45-day money-back guarantee so I've still got time to talk to their customer support andmake sure that I'm not doing anything stupid with it. I just wanted to gather opinions from users and see if they had similar issues with extreme attenuation.

I even pulled 2 power tubes on my combo to drop it down to 40 watts and it was still blisteringly loud (halving the power only yeilds about a 1 or 3 dB drop in percieved volume). So the power attenuator stays for now...

I REALLY want THD's Univalve amp and their matching 2x12. Its a 15-watt single-ended Class A tube amp with auto-biasing...you can put any octal-based power/preamp tube combo in there that you want. Plus it has a built-in Hot Plate. Talk about versatility! Unfortunately its a $900 head and a $600 cabinet! Yowza!

But I could crank it up to 11 and not cause nosebleeds.

I would definately check with them then to see what might be happening. It really shouldnt induce any heavy noise. I know my Marshall never made a sound.
