XY Placement

So I've gathered so far that the two overhead mics when placed in what is refered to be XY placement you put the mics right infront of the kick drum right besides each other, but are they to look like a X or an Y as in should they over lap each other facing the opposite direction or should they be right beside each other face the opposite direction?
