I've noticed lately the need for me to have a portable rack. For gig's and for situations where i need to move my equiment. So i was thinking instead of buying one of those INSANELY expensive portable racks, i could make one myself. I was wondering if anyone has done this, with any success. All i need is a 12u rack, with room for a mixer to sit ontop of it. It needs to roll, with locking wheels. and the back needs to close, but not the front. anyone done this? or know where i can get this for decently cheap. it would be sweet if it could roll over grass aswell.

Yeah, it's easy, I have built LOADS of racks in my somewhat rocky career of rock n roll. Some for good looks in the studio and some just for heavy duty use on the road. Go to a store, or friends house that has one, take measurements and look at it, it's really just a box that has a 19" inside width and the height is the "u" size 12, for you, time 1 3/4" inches...each "u" is 1 3/4. Make it out of about 3/4" plywood, get some good crate wheels from you local home improvement store, as well as some matt black paint. You should be able to make one for under $40, with the bulk of it being the wheels.

Other than that, all you need is a skill saw (table saw preferred) to cut the wood and a power drill to pre-drill where the drills go and drill them in.

Easy stuff, and kinda fun and money saving.

For rolling on the grass, you can look for the inflated rubber wheels. Otherwise I have seen some that are medium hard rubber but are 4 or 5 inch wheels that would work great for that.

Also look at ways of shrinking the PA.Those rack mounted beasts weigh a ton and level ground is the good bit.

well heres what (in a perfect situation) I hope to do with it. I want to put all my equipment into it, along with my computer so, i can jsut hook it all up and have portable digital recording. I realize that i wouldnt have room for montior (speakers) on the top of the rack, and maybe only room for a small computer monitor, but if i could make it work.. it would be great.
I realize that 12u wont be big enough, but i just though that out there, cuase i didnt give it much thought before.

Here is what i have:
1. Digidesign 002 rack (2u)
2. Qsc 1450 power amp (2u)
3. Furmann Power conditioner (1u)
4. Behringer composer pro (1u)
5. My desktop computer (i dont know how mant U that is, ill measure later)

I also want to have room for one more 2u power amp (going to bridge them eventually) an effects prossor for vocals (2u maybe) and a headphone jack..(1u).

this comes up to about 12, not counting the computer, which least just say is 8u... thats a 20u rack.

But what about overheating. I obvoisly want to keep it all cool. so fans? how would i do that?

wow, so much. haha.. anyone ever done this?

Most PC cases are 3u if memory serves...and you'd be best off moving the amps to a separate rack for heat purposes.

I've done it(everything but the computer anyway), I had my whole PA into two racks, one for the console and effects and one for the amps which sat on the stage. it worked well for a few years...then you just need a couple totes for cables and junk...
