You Don't Understand... Final?

Well here's the final or near final mix "You Don't Understand". Everything has been redone hopefully for the better. The vocals aren't the finals though, I don't know when I'll have my studio set back up to do the final on them, so these will have to do for now.

I also don't have any speakers to listen over, so I'd appreciate comments on the mix especially. Thanks for listening and any comments anybody cares to give. :)

Nice beatles/love esque vibe Dan.

Dunno wheather its the MP3 conversion but when the chorus kicks in the whole thing seems to go a bit wobbly (if you know what i mean) The hi hat actually sounds like its got a flange on it. For me, the high hat is also way too loud on the verse.

Guitars sounds great,Cool chorus and good song mate.

OD, that was very much Byrds going on there. There is a touch of something else, which I think is mostly you. I loved it and dont honestly think the vox are that out there. Honestly the harmonies are great, and the main vox work as well. The mix sounded stellar now I wouldnt touch a thing.

Man, people just dont make music like this anymore so I am glad you are!!

Thanks for listening mac! I'm not sure what the wobble might be in the chorus, could be the mp3 conversion, I don't hear it myself, so maybe it was just a bad stream. I've had a couple comments the hi hat is bit too loud, so I'll be toning that down a bit.

Thanks again for the listen & comments. :)

Thank you very much Noize, I appreciate the kind words! Doing that Byrds cover probably had a bit to do with the sound. Even though I have alot of distortion on the guitars I still like to get that kind of sound and of course I like to try and do interesting harmonies, which I think the Byrds were great at. Byrds & Beatles influence are pretty strong in this one me thinks. :)

I think I'm gonna adjust the hat a bit and that's about it for the mix.

OD, I just remembered as I was going through some of your tunes. I still havent put up the mp3 of God Only Knows from way back when. I will try and get it converted and up this weekend. I think you will get a chuckle out of it since it really was an 80's power ballad when I finished it.

Dan,

Awesome song. My new favorite OldDog song! You always use such interesting chord progressions in your song. A lot of guys (like me) get stuck using the same old chords all of the time, but every one of your songs seems to come up with a new set of chords that I never knew existed! You definately have a knack!

The mix is just beautiful. Your drumming is wonderful, as is your guitar playing. (Is that a cowbell I hear near the beginning?)

Harmonies are spot on. Did you use your new vocal harmonizer thingy? Sounds great, and very natural.

Keep up the good work! If you weren't such an old dog, you could take your show on the road and be famous.

Hey Dog, I really enjoyed this one! I think that the MP3 compression is certainly doing something funky to that hi-hat. I can hear that telltale low-bitrate .mp3 sound when the hi-hat starts. So that makes the hat stand out to me but that's pretty much the only time I hear it.

Great mix as always OD. I just finished blasting my ears with some electric guitar playing so I don't have the best aural perspective right now, but it all sounds good aside from the low bitrate mp3.

I love the crunch guitar sound you got. Usually that's a modeller's weakest type of tone, but it sounds like that GT8 handles it very well. I like the little licks you threw in as well.

I'm pretty sure I've listened to this one in the past but it was good to hear it again. Great arrangement and songwriting for sure.

At a couple of points during the verses the song seemed to want to be just a couple of bpm faster, but the chorus sounds right. A tempo change would be disorienting in this song, so I guess its just about right on the average.

Glad you liked it Jim! Most of my chord progressions I think are just a result of the way I write songs. The chords always come first, and when I hit something that sounds cool to me that's when I start on the rest of the song.

Yes indeedy that is a cowbell.. or more accurately my TD6's idea of one. LOL I used the VW for most of the harmonies.

Yeah, I'd look pretty funny up on stage with a bottle of Geritol instead of Jim Beam. LOL

Thanks for the listen!

Thanks Tad! I fooled around quite a bit with the guitar tone on this one glad it came out sounding good.

From the WIP of this one I posted earlier I backed off on the distortion some, but I think it could still probably be a little bit less.

Glad you enjoyed the song, I appreciate the comments for sure. :)

I noticed you released a couple new tunes while I was bandwidth challenged, I'm going to be giving them a listen and comment soon. I have a ton of catching up to do. :)

Thats thick and rich. I like the vox compression. well mixed, and the ohhs and ahhs are top!
I also like the words. this is a well written, thoughtfull song.
i feel beatles, 80's pop, and a little floyd in the chorus. cant go wrong with that mix.... its like playin d, c, g in a country song.
very very well dun, and...you get a thumbs up!

Ah, the mighty OldDog drops another classic on the world!! KABOOOOOOOOOOOM.

Dan, loving it as usual my man. Indeed, the comments Jim made are mirroring my thoughts on the song, and your songs overall in general.

I add, as usual, top guitar playing, vocals and big time cool drums (which I have noticed improve a lot since ye started)...in fact, it's up there with yer best my man.....pushing off "Are You Gonna Be Around" even ;-O !! And I loved that song tae...top class.

Cant hear that hat thing myself but Im listening on rubbishy PC speakers...will MP3 the sucka at some point and listen properly...add to my OldDog collection of classics.

KEEP EM COMING DAAAWG! Top drawer vintage class...

Coco.

Yer making my head swell Coco! LOL Seriously though thanks for the kind words. I've been trying to out do "Are You Gonna Be Around" since I started recording again, time will tell I guess. <G>

Thanks for the encouraging words on the drums, it's slow going, but I feel like I'm making progress :)

classic pop song, chorus and bridge reminds me of the kinks, whioch cant be bad.

hi hat is effected by the mp3, but i think it is high compared to the ride in the chorus, imho the ride should sound rounder and more fluid than hi hats and if you drop the hats a tad they will..

only bad comment on it mind you ;)

Thanks much for the listen and comments pixelpixie. I have a new mix with the hi-hat lowered a bit that I haven't gotten around to posting yet.
