A certain keyboard sound....

I'm after something capable of making similar sounds to those on Flaming lips 'Yoshimi....'

Budgets pretty tight so i'll likely be ebaying. Any ideas, let me know.

You will just need to choose instruments in whatever catagory suits your needs. VSTi or DX or whatever.

There is a ton of free ones to try as well as some lower budget stuff. And most of the pay for ones have demos to try out and sample mp3 to see what they sound like.

I'm drawing a complete blank on any of the tunes and how the synth parts sound on Yoshimi. I will see if my son has it and try and give a listen. Then maybe I can recomend domething more directly by name.

OK, Now I have a better idea of what your after. That is not going to be just and average ordinary synth your after there mac.

Are you looking for something you can play live or just in the studio? If it is the studio I can recomend several software synths that will work very well for you. Hardware for live playing is going to be another story, and not cheap either.

Let me know and I'll make ya a list. Finding one used might be your best bet if its going to need to be hardware.

Thanks very much for the replies noize.

I'm kinda caught between a rock and a hard place cos i'm still using a stand alone recorder so it will have to be hardware, even though i'm not likely to be gigging anytime soon. Its been mentioned to me a while back that those sounds didn't come from any cheap kit.

If you got the time, a short list would be just great. I'm in no great rush for it, happy to trawl ebay looking for that bargin.

Some of the keyboard effects on Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots are definitely "reamped"...where they plug the keyboard into an amp then mic the amp. You can just hear some of that room ambience and speaker distortion/movement that makes it sound pretty cool and powerful. Maybe even some distortion or modulation effects inline between the keyboard and the amp.

I like that album a lot. Matter of fact, I might have to give that one a listen today since I haven't heard it for a long time now.

How about that title track instrumental? Weirdest instrumental I've ever heard...well weirdest that still actually has some entertainment value.

Awesome and beautiful album. Yeah that instrumental sort of freaks out between 3 n' 5. Quite amusing and bizzare....I'm looking forward to the new one.

I've run a kids keyboard through my amp before and got some pretty cool sounds, might start havin some fun that way again..

Indeed, I run synths through processor all the time. ITs even easier now with P5 set up the way it is.

Anyway mac, I will indeed have me a look around to see what they might be using. I tried the quick look and search for some pics of their gear, but nothing is really visable. The one shot I did see almost appears to be an early model Korg Titon, but I couldn't really tell.

I'll keep ya posted.
