ok i want to be able to record 8 to 16 mics simultaneously to my computer, if possible i would like to be able to do pre eqs and pans that are sent along with the audio to the computer via firewire or usb. Along with this i want to be able to control at least 4 earphones and 2 sets of monitors and sub and a talk back mic so basicaly a control room surface. and last but not least i want to be able to control cubase sx3 with a controler so i can mix, eq, and do paramters for my effects. HOW WOULD I BE ABLE TO DO THIS (WHICH EQUIPMENT)

Mar 06, 2006 09:26 am Budget, again... how much do you want to spend? How expandable do you want to be? Buy a little at a bit as you go, or all at once?
ESI, Delta & M-Audio (among others) have a couple interfaces that will "stack" and allow additional breakout boxes in order to get from 8 to 16 inputs. Other manufacturer's have ADAT on their interfaces for the addition of external gear to go from 8 to 16 inputs. Another way would be with an RME or Dakota interface that is all ADAT.
USB will definitely not do what you want. Firewire will, if all parts of the system mesh & mesh well. PCI can do it. But you need allot of computer, especially for anything over 8 simultaneous inputs. Controlling headphones would be in the realm of a headphone amp. Talk-back mic is in the realm of a supplemental mixer board (generally). Most multi-input interfaces have multiple outputs, which would allow for 3 or 4 submixes for monitoring purposes (including a talk-back, if wanted).

Mar 06, 2006 04:25 pm You could try something like the Mackie Onyx 1640 16 channel firewire mixer with the firewire pc card. You'll be able to run 18 channels of input with eq, pan, inserts, etc. on the way in. This should have talkback, as well as enough outs to run two sets of monitors, and you could pick up one of those combo headphone/headphone amp packages like the AKG/ART studio headphone pack which will come with four headphones and a headphone amp. As for a control surface, you could try something like the Behringer BCR2000B control, which would put some of those DAW functions onto a hardware interface. On top of this you'd obviously need a handful of cables and such.
The whole thing could probably be had for about $1900 or so, excluding cables. In reality though, it might be more or less, and the pieces of gear I just suggested are a one out of a million possible combination to have the same results. More specificity would help really narrow it down to specific pieces of gear. Hope that helps.
Mar 06, 2006 06:47 pm would running a mackie- onxy 1640 to the computer, then running a central station to the mackie for monitors and such, and then running a tascam us-2400 work. is that a good combo or is there something better.

Mar 07, 2006 01:07 am That would probably work, but the tascam us-2400 is more for mixing tracks than using effects. I'm sure it would work either way.
