Soundcard outputs question

One thing that has always confused me is why soudncards have so many outputs sometimes. Why have two 1/4" inputs, then ten 1/4" outputs? Most i would ever need is two for a stereo output mix. what do people use so many for?

Ever seen anyone mix an an actual mixing desk?

How do the signals get there I wonder.... Outputs from the soundcards you say? Fantastic.

Also can be used to run signals to multiple sets of monitors for referencing, headphone amps, effects units, dynamic processors, the list goes on.

I use mine for submixes that may run through an outboard processor. As well I can route my software submixes to differant outputs on my desk and mute those submixes without having to do it in the software. Come in handy when I am sitting at the keyboard controller and need to have a quick listne without certain aspects of a piece of music.

well, no, i haven't ever seen anyone mix on an actual desk. otherwise i could've just asked them.

okay so you run the outputs to the desk, and once there what do you do with them? as for effects, you run em out of your soudncard, through the effects, then right back into he soundcard to be recorded over?
what if i had one effects processor, that i used primarily for recording. would i be unplugging it and plugging it into the effects every time i wanted to use it on a recorded track?

i'm sorry, i know next to nothing about all of this. have tried to think up a good setup for recording and playback using hardware effects, but nothing i think up works logistically

They will either be routed to a processor or just to the main mix for listening. Or possibly a combination of both.

As for the processor, you can run that either in an aux send/return set up. Or as an insert on what ever channels you need to use it. Or you can still route what ever you are recording right through the processor before it even hits the mixer.

There are several routing possibilty for differant situations.
