Yuck, now that it's a hard date I am nervous. I go lights on at 12:30 to have a Septoplasty and Turbinate Resection so hopefully I can actually breath through my nose some day...it's been ages since I have had a decent night sleep...can't even remember the last good one...hopefully this will help.

I hate medical procedures tho...

Hey dB. Best wishes comin' at ya!

You know I'm pretty sure this is the same surgery that my dad had. Was this a result of an injury? In his case it wasn't but I figured yours is because of one too many shots to the nose?? You know, trying to break the other guys fist with your nose :)

hehehe, no, I am more of a grappler than a boxer, I have taken my fair share of shots to the nose but have never broken it.

Actually, I have had a deviated septum from birth (don't tell my insurance company that though, not that you Canadians know about that issue). Actually, this surgeon told me I have probably the worst deviation(s) in my septum of anyone he has ever seen that has not had their nose broken. I actually have two, one going each direction and plugging both intakes at one point or another.

I get put to sleep, get Vicodin for a week or so...so it's all good. Afterwards I can actually breath...which is good.

Thanks for the good wishes...I am getting nervous now though, since now it's an actual date. Until now it's just been "something I have to do someday".

Septum = a partition separating two cavities or spaces.

hey db, i had this surgery (or one related to it) when i was 17. i had a deviated septum which made it hard to breathe.

i breathed the stuff through the mask and the next thing i new i was waking up and swearing at the doctor. black eyes for a week or two, but the percoset made me very happy and so the pain wasn't bad after i got the pills. but it was crazy: i could breathe, and at my mood seemed to change, too. something about being able to smell again and to have airflow in the back of my nose, it did something to my mood. you will like what this does for you

might even turn him into a lib!

oh dear!

ack face surgery....i don't care how many painkillers they give me, to pay someone to cut my face up seems strange. i'm sure they have good surgeons there though.

they also changed the appearance of my nose. for one thing, it was straight all of a sudden (i had broken it as a kid). they also removed a bump from the bridge (maybe a result of the bike crash? i dont really know) and because they did that, they told me they also had to modify the tip of the nose so the proportions would be correct. i was like 'man, i don't want plastic surgery' and the guy showed me pictures--i couldn't even tell what had been done to the tips of the people in the pictures so i said ok. when i got out of there, my nose looked way different to me, but it didn't seem altered in terms of its basic form. i really liked what they did.

Hey forty, sounds like you have a full Rhinoplasty. Since appearance wasn't my big concern, damned be my lucrative modeling career, I can get away with the less harsh Septoplasty, but yes, very close to the same procedure. I am guessing my wife will be hoping for the personality change too...

I know not breathing has made me a progressively crabbier SOB...or so I am told by all the thin skinned sissy bastards I hang around with...

If I become a lib I will do the lib thing, go get John Edwards and sue that bastard doctor.

yeah i think it was a rhinoplasty, but it was more than that too. the main goal was to scrape out excess cartilage and tissue inside the nose, as they straightened it, so that i would be able to breathe. cuz before the surgery my left nostril was pretty much closed.

weird thing is, i once again have some closure on the left. it functions at about ten percent, but i don't notice it unless i check

yeah, my left side is virtually closed, my right side is obstructed further up the nostril. The Turbinate Resection is the scraping of the insides...that sounds nasty, but it also sounds like a good thing to do.

All I know is I wanna be able to breath...it's been too many years of not...

Good luck to ya!I use to be a little nervous about medical procedures until I had surgery a few years ago. And realized that we put more trust in folks on a two lane highway to stay on there side, and we can be pretty sure that the doctors have at least been trained.

Thanks man, I am sure I'll be fine, I just hate any time I have to go to sleep...unless of course the attending nurse is cute...then at least the last thing I see will give me nice dreams.

Yep, good wishes here as well. Having gone through 2 broken nose episodes I feel for the not breathing proper thing. But this will indeed make it better for sure. A gal at work just had it done at the end of last year and she is happier then hell she did it.

Good luck on Septoplasty 5th.The cartilage in my nose is'nt straight but breathing is better now so it may be due to things shrivelling with age.Hope nothing else goes the same way.:)

Good luck on the surgery dB, I've only had surgery once and the prospect of having it was much worse than the surgery itself, here's to a speedy recovery! :)

Seems that is usually the case with me, I have went to sleep a couple times, and a couple awake, it's never as bad as it is in one's head...

Thanks for the well wishes all!

Yeah, good luck with this db. Just make sure to double check with the doctor that they know what procedure they're doing before they put you under.

The one time I had surgery the doctor asked and I told him clean up my right ankle and he said good thing I asked the chart says left. I'm thinking to myself are you that dumb there's a fricking HOLE in my right ankle and my left ankles fine! Anyways, maybe thats why I had an episode like forty and woke up swearing at the doctor and anasthesiologist and trying to swing at anyone near me.

Hmm, I can barely breathe out of my left nostril, and right nostril doesn't get very great air flow either. Maybe when/if I get some health insurance I'll look into getting something like this done....

dB, if you end up needing a little more nose after this, I have plenty to go around. Maybe we could arrange a trade.

Good, quality sound advice coolo...I've heard those horror stories, really. Fortunately the surgeon is only an ear nose and throat guy that I saw for my eval...but yeah, I'd hate to wake up without my tonsils or something strange...

Herb, I gots plenty, but thanks for the generous offer :-)

Hey, good luck dB. I can relate actually, since getting my nose broken at school one side of my nose is really hard to breathe through, gets blocked so easily and is essentially useless. Doesn't sound as bad as yours and i turned down the op, but yeah, i get it.
