OK...we joined MySpace...now what?

I've never really understood the whole MySpace thing before. I visit people's pages and I'm bombarded with loud music and advertisements and a bunch of pictures of drunk people who leave cryptic messages.

Nevertheless, if only to prove that we're still hip and relevant, a couple of the guys in the band wanted to jump on board...so we did.

Now what do we do?

Now you wait for all the friend requests to pile in from 20 year old girls with web cams and drunken pervs that hope you actually know those 20 year old web cam girls...

MySpace is stupid, though sadly necessary...I set up an HRC myspace and it has been most anti-climactic...

Join HRC's friend list at www.myspace.com/homerecordingconnection and let's waste time together.

Thanks dB! That was easy! Now I need to go clean up.

Since I added you, am I automatically added as an HRC friend as well?

I suppose I could just go find out...

Edit: Evidently

Myspace is a good tool if your an active band and spend enough time on it. If you have a decent sized fan base/are looking to play many shows all around and not some bar band, then Myspace is a big help. Play shows and tell people "Come check us out on Myspace!" It helps alot. My band has lots of support through myspace.

Thanks fellas! It's kind of fun trying to figure out which HRC identity goes with which MySpace identity.

Should be a game show on NBC on Friday nights.

One question: Is it appropriate (cool) to have a song auto-play when someone visits your page, or is that just lame and annoying?

I consider it lame... but I think my music page does that.

And yeah rigsby, but it's located here www.myspace.com/gnosisthrunoise

Jim, I added you (bace135).
I think you might as well have the music auto play, that way people are (almost) guaranteed to hear some of the music. Plus it helps get those play numbers up!

I personally don't like it but its pretty much standard practice. Plus users can turn it off for themselves, so even if you have auto play turned on, it won't play for users who have it off in their profile options.

Anyone that forces playback on me on first page load I surf away from very quickly on any site...it's up to ME to decide if I want to listen or not...NOT you.

I have it off, because it annoys me too. I think I'll leave it off. Just like those stupid pop-up advertisements that scare the heck out of me because they're so loud.

I have it on, i figure if someone wants to visit my page they probably want to hear my stuff. I find it annoying if i'm waiting for the music and realise it's not going to start as i'm so used to pages that autoload the music.

I leave it on, I figure if you are visiting me band page then you will probably take a listen anyway. And like said above, they can turn it off if they want.

Also, I don't see what being a bar band has to do with anything. We play mostly bars and always post our shows there. We also put most the local bands we play with as our top friends and they do the same for us. We have obtained many new fans that way.

Myspace is the biggest thing to happen to music since CD's. You've got a group of 6 million+ kids looking for new music, new friends, and new bands to get into, and all it takes to reach them is a message/friend-request!

I disgaree with that...while it's a way to network, saying it's the best thing since CD's is a bit far fetched. You can get some fans, may even sell an extra disk or two, but it's not going to help many bands make it much bigger...one in a rare few perhaps...

And that's for the same reason as anywhere else, it's one band in a pool of thousands...

Whether it makes a band get big or not, isn't the idea of "every little bit helps" kinda apply here? It's free advertising...

I am not arguing the benefit, I am arguing "biggest thing to happen to music since CD's" part...if that doesn't qualify for the "overstatement of the day" award, not sure what does...

This is a funny thread. I joined Myspace as well. I've made so many true blue friends. I'm kidding of course. I don't get it. The whole thing seems pointless. I don't really see the appeal for non band users.

I've heard some commercial artists that have already built "brand" with their label are getting out of their deals and are doing myspace only. So if you can get people to know you, it may be possible to have a music career with just myspace and per song downloads through snocap, itunes etc.

I'm pondering ditching myspace... I don't update it much and managing the spam and fake friends is a drain.

I have a couple models I worked with on it...

The problem of course is that I'm more in contact with real friends because of it.

So DB... if you would... I need an application which will go to all of the message forums and blogs I frequent and load them into one dynamic page that I can type replys into and have that post to all the necessary forums. :)

anyway... myspace isn't yet the time pit that modelmayhem forums are... but then again... modelmayhem is atleast useful for actual networking and never gives me spam... and I can look at the friend list and see... oh! thats a model and thats a photographer...

personally I don't give a **** about 'tags' and a mass block of friends isn't helpfull either... I want to be able to organize them into categories so I can actually utilize the networking effort with announcements... I mean... on myspace if I post a bullitin it's visable for about 1 hour...then it's buried... whats the point?

maybe once I finish taxes I'll disentangle myself. :)

I still like it. I have friends from out of state that I haven't seen since I was 17 (15 years) who recently contacted me. I have gotten spammed from porno sites lately.. (check all... delete) no worse than my e-mail though.

As far as bands go, I don't invite anyone and everyone, my list includes mostly people from my state and it makes contancting a large crowd of people for shows much easier. People check myspace more than e-mail it seems.

You get out of it what you put in. To me it's and e-mail system, where I can post some pictures or a blog (keeping people updated on our recording process so they quit asking) with a nice schedule for our shows. And we have indeed obtained true blue fans from the UK, Australia, Japan etc.. I don't know how they found us, but they did, and they commented. As said before, every little bit helps.

Bulletins are ok zeke, but I usually do event invites, search by area code (within 200 miles of) and then invite everyone on that list. That way they actually get a "new event invite" when they login vs. a bulletin that is gone in an hour like you said. Truthfully I usually do both though.

Yep, the myspace thing seems to work like Karyn stated above. I rotate bands through my single player and rotate their banners and such as well. I have also found so much good music on myspace that you can't by in a record store, only order from their sites or CD baby or the like.

So I've been spending a lot of time on MySpace lately. I just created a personal page for myself instead of the artist page I've had up for a while now. The networking features are far more intricate than they were for the artist page, and are actually pretty impressive.

But when you look at the place from the outside, just browsing around, what a bizarre place it truly is. Its weird to meet people I haven't seen since high school in what feels like, at times, the internet equivalent of the alley behind the pool hall.

I have to admit that the thing that makes it attractive is its sheer draw. I've met at least a dozen people from high school and college in the past week. Any one place that could attract a dozen old friends and acquaintences is at least kind of cool.

I noticed that the HRC MySpace page is starting to collect a little spam in the comments section. I think you may be able to filter some of that, or maybe i'm thinking of the mail/messaging system there.

Which I guess is what brings up the biggest drawback of MySpace: its sheer draw. Its a target. They've upped security a little bit since I originally joined, but damn! This is what truly gives it the back alley feeling. The spam, for the love of pete, the spam. In 1 week I've gathered dozens of spam friend invites and messages. But I almost fell for it the first time. I mean, what self-respecting man wouldn't want to doublecheck to make sure that he didn't actually know a 22 year old blonde named Divinity?

Hilarity. A couple of years ago, I created a MySpace page thinking I should get into the loop, because before I knew it, somebody else might grab the name Herb Utsmelz. Right. Never filled out the bio or any of the rest of it. I check it once in a while. Last time I looked in, some bot named Lucy was trying to sell me a dildo to please my girlfriend.

Some Internet friends are better than others.

Speaking of that, I have not been on my page in at least 2 months. I bet there is a ton of **** all over the page by now.

But you can delete the comments at any time you like, and that includes the spam crap as well.
