So does anybody know if this thing actually works?

I tried an Ebow today at Guitar Center. I hated it. Not open to suggestions involving that... thing.

Really? I got an Ebow recently and love it, I use it with a slide. But I don't know why that Pianha wouldn't work, it's just a violin bow in miniature right down to the rosin (which will get all over your strings, so be prepared). I've used my violin bow in my Jimmy Page moments....

I may decide to revisit it another day, but when I tried that thing yesterday it just irritated me. The strings don't attack quickly enough to make it practical for me. I don't want to wait 3-4 seconds between every note.
I wish I could find a "bow" for the guitar that is more like a rotating drum with the bow string wrapped around it. Apparently there used to be something called a Gizmotron (had a motor in it that drove constantly spinning "bow-wheels" against your strings at the touch of a button) that turned your guitar into a kind of hurdy-gurdy thing, but it's rare now, and originally went for $250.

Tincan-
Id say just get a bow. The gizmotron was a very lame atempt at expanding the guitar sound library. Page was endorsed by them- that doesnt mean he every used one for a recording (who knows). Ive seen one in my entire life that worked properly and that was on a bass guitar and it wasnt very exciting. the bow on the other hand ive seen page used several times and you can not fake that sound. The strings "attack" well when you get the hang of it and synthetic bows cost around 20-40$. When I heard about gizmotron i was all about it too-im just letting you know dont get your hopes up on finding one that actually works. either way good luck.

...plus, wouldn't your guitar's pickups amplify the sound of the motor in the gizmotron thingy? I remember that happenening when I put a drill near my guitar (trying to impersonate something I saw Paul Gilbert do one time with a pick on the tip of a drill hehehe)

Synthia - do you mean a bow or an Ebow? I would - but you can play either only the E string, or all the strings at once. I was looking for something that could offer a rounded shape to fit the flat layout of the strings, so I could play all the strings individually. That Piranha bow sounds good, I just don't want to jump in without asking around first. So far, nobody's heard of it.

OK this is a little OT, but I've just gotta say something.

I went to the official ebow website here: www.ebow.com/

How about that site eh? I'm so glad that the corporation's advertising department let their special-ed grade-school children do their website for them. They've applied the best HTML techniques from 15 years ago to bring you an online brochure straight from 1989! I mean, I have total respect for the seamless application of the "TABLE" HTML tag! You hardly even notice! Also note the now-ubiquitous rainbow divider graphic, and the genious application of the repeating phrase "ebow e-bow" at the bottom.

But don't let the antiquated site get you down, because in the "intro" section, they let you know that you will be able to learn ebow techniques from this guy: www.ebow.com/ebow/graphics/lenny2.jpg

I mean, it's Lenny Freaking Walker, people! Apparently that goofy expression is permanent, otherwise I would've insisted that ebow use a different picture of me. But that's what makes Lenny so cool...he just doesn't care!

Anyways, it does look like they've added a "new" flash site that actually looks like it was conceived in this eon, but you have to click to it...apparently most of ebow's clientelle haven't upgraded past those 2400 baud modems yet to accept a bandwidth hog such as "graphics".

LOL, I don't mean to bash ebow, but I couldn't help myself hehehe

But seriously, they do have a "player's guide" section that might give ya some tips on getting better results out of it, TCBug...they advertise that you can do arpeggios, which would mean that SOMEBODY can get a quick response out of it instead of a 2-4 second delay. At least I hope!

Yeah, there are what they call "hot spots" in your pickups which will attack more quickly, and it helps to use humbuckers instead of single coils, and use the neck pickup. I've tried the arpeggio thing, and it does work. The cool thing about the new Ebow plus is it has a harmonic setting that enhances harmonic- I got some really cool two octave up kinds of sounds with that.

Here I go encouraging off topic posts but, I especially loved the 'ebow e-bow ebow e-bow ebow e-bow ebow e-bow ebow' at the bottom of the page.

yikes.

Cuz I don't have enough time for my family plus the clients I do have, plus my full time job, plus HRC plus plus plus...

I often wonder if there was a way I could squeeze a couple more hours into a day...but I haven't found it yet...

Yes, I agree that I've seen much worse sites. But this one is just so reminescent of my first website in college that it's scary.

Hey, how about the metric day? 100 hours per day! I seem to remember that from an old weekend update on Saturday Night Live.
