Wow, good luck replacing that very distinctive character.

Hey, it doesn't have to be true to be on FOX news! Heehee, it's fun to kid.

Well, at least Tyler will live on forever in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith!

Eh, I don't even watch the news channels so I wouldn't even know. Just parroting what I've caught along the way.

But Aerosmith without Steven Tyler? That'll work out about as well as Motley Crue did without Vince Neil.

Actually, if they were still putting out music that was relevant, then it would fail. But Aerosmith hasn't had any meaningful music come out of their camp in a long time now. So maybe it would be about the same with or without the face of the band?

No way...Aerosmith isn't Aerosmith without Steven Tyler. They are now more of a nostalgic band. Like Tad said, nothing new in a while. All they play now are their old hits. Might as well be The Turtles or The Grass Roots or something.

Journey without Steve Perry...how's that workin' out?

They deserve to call it quits at this point. Do some golfing and fishing and live the high life while they still have some life left.

I'm with Jim on this one. The band would not be the band without him. I can't see the band going anywhere without him. And with Joe Perry doing a solo thing as well it might be time for an end.

I would like to see them both stick around and pull out all the stops for the 40th anniversary though. They would be the only other band to pull that off aside from the stones. With the original members I should say.

Well glad I got to see them before they bust up or replace Tyler. You can replace just about any other member of a band, but you can't very often <succesfully> replace the Singer/Frontman.

How many bands can we list that have maintained success/relevance after replacing the frontman?

ACDC (it's not their fault he died)
Van Halen (arguably)

That's all I got...

Black Sabbath put out arguably one of their best albums with Ian Gillan and made great music with Ronnie James Dio.

But yeah, it's a limited list.

If Tyler leaves, I hope they fold and not become a caricature of themselves doing discredit to their legacy.

When you said Ian Gillan, I was thinking of Ray Gillen, who was a very short-lived singer for Sabbath. He fronted the blues/hard rock band Badlands, who had former Ozzy guitarist Jake E. Lee in it.

As it turned out, Gillen wasn't much of a songwriter and was booted before he had a chance to participate in anything more than laying down a few vocal tracks and doing a bit of touring with Sabbath. Gillen ended up dying of AIDS-related illness at some point.

So I was thinking "how the hell could he have participated in one of Sabbath's best albums when he hardly contributed at all?" Hehehe.

Where would I know Ian Gillian from? Was he from another band?

Oh and on the Van Halen note, they did have quite a bit of success in the "Van Hagar" era. But man, when they put former Extreme frontman Gary Cherone in that slot, it didn't exactly turn the world on its ear. I guess any time that you try to replace one of rock and roll's most legendary front men with a guy who wasn't even the most talented member of a guitar-crazy band that only charted with an Everly-Brothers-style acoustic single, it's not going to turn out well, even if he was a He-Man Woman Hater (and anybody that recognizes that reference had just as bad of taste in music as I did at one point or another :-D).

I guess that the Allman Brothers Band qualifies as one band that found lots of success after their frontman died. Heck, they've even carried on after losing their original bassist and ditching founding member Dickie Betts.

The Grateful Dead went a ways after Jerry died, especially since Bob Weir was doing most of the singing in the later years anyways since Jerry couldn't play guitar, sing, and chase the dragon at the same time.

I'm sure I'll think of another couple.

Yeah, he was in this little band called Deep Purple, did some awesome solo stuff which is mostly only available on imports, and did Born Again with Sabbath, the album and tour...

Oh that's right, he was the singer for Deep Purple wasn't he? Was he an original member along with Blackmore, or was he from one of the later incarnations ala Steve Morse?

He wasn't the first, but he was surely the most memorable.

From Wikipedia I also learn Ian was the voice of Jesus in the original recording of Jesus Christ Superstar...interesting...from there to "Born Again" by sab...wow. :-)

Not the movie soundtrack though - Ted Neeley.

Man, that guy could hold a note... One of the first non "G" movies I ever saw in a theater... Still pull out the OMP soundtrack occasionally.

The first 3 albums by Deep Purple were fronted by Rod Evans with bassist Nick Simper. They were replaced by Gillan and Glover.

I'll add on here as well.

Journey without Steve Perry.

In other bands that survived losing a member:

Steely Dan

Ramones

The Eagles seem to have the on again off again relationship with all of their members.

Fourier

Faith no more

Genesis

Alice in chains

Styx

The Who

The Rolling Stones

And there is a bunch more. I think I'll stop here. :)

Maybe they survived losing a member...but a front man?

The Stones without Mick Jagger?

The Who without Roger Daltrey?

The Eagles without Glen Frey or Don Henley?

ANFW! :-)

I'm with Jim, loosing a member is one thing, but a front man, especially one as flamboyant, distinctive and recognizable as Tyler...that's going to be tough...a few have, but more have not.
