i'm gonna have to pass. I've got some home / work things to work out, so I won't be working on much hobby stuff.

Sounds like a great project, but alas, I don't want to hold anything up, so i'll have to catch the next one.

This project is going to take quite a while, so if at any time durring it, should you change your mind, I'm sure we'd be able to squeeze you in.

Just keep an eye on things here, and check on it's progress to see if there's a point that lines up for you.

Hope all goes well with your home / work things. : )

Right now, we're still working with the Nooners riff that's in Captain Tripps profile. The FTP site that Noise set up, I believe is where we send what we come-up with to.

Things we need...

Lyrics, Vocals, Bass, Drums, Guitars, Keys, written bridges/transitions to other pieces of music, and of course other pieces of music that will fit the bill.

Hey Noize. You sent me the password and login as well.

I just have not had the chance to get a hold of the Theremin player. I think that he took a job that is playing in Hawaii. He should be back in a few days.

As per Captain Tripps request in the other thread, let's get a grip on what each involved is going to be doing on this by keeping a list of what each is designated to...

~Noize2u: Keys/Synth, The Overall Music Mix,/Morphing of the various instruments that have doubles/tripples.
~dB: Bass Guitar.
~Coolo: MC/Rapping, Slide Whistle, Conga, Vox-Acapella.(BH Echo)
~Rob Stemple: 'Dead Milkmen Drums'.
~Deon: Guitars
~Zekthedeadcow: Percussion, and Video mixing.
~Cap'n Tripps: Guitar, Bass, Dums, & Vox-Acapella.
~J-bot: Bamboo Flute, Keys/SynthVox-Acapella/Didgi
~BeerHunter: Guitars, Bass, Drums, Vox-Acapella.
~Colonel Sanders: Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vox-Acapella, and Didgi.(?)
~Geoff: Drums.
~Quincysoin: Guitars Vox-Acapella.
~Loki: Keys/Synth, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vox-Acapella.
~Hue theWent & the BWP crew: Guitars, Bass, Drums, Vox-Acapella, and the Overall Video Mix

So far, that is who we have, and I think I'm somewhat accurate on what we each are doing, but please let me know if I'm off on anything, and I'll make the edit.

Dean (Dead Milkmen's Drummer) it is!

I'll get a hold of him today.

I also have a friend that owned a large studio here in Philly. I'll have him record the drums. Just because he loves the Milkmen.

And also, he has all of the great toys!

Noize, do you want the mulit track? Or just the stereo mix?

That sounds great Rob! Although, we may have to 'lo-fi' it a bit to match whatever other drummers offer, as they most likely would not be recording in a high end studio. : )
Then again, a good drum capture is a good drum capture, so it shouldn't be too far off, right?

Rob, multi would be great, but if he can get aq good mix on stereo then that would work as well. I"m sure we may have other percussion elements to work with as well.

But indeed, multi would give the option of deeper edits on the drums as well.

I've been studying the way alot of those shots were done on the original PFC project, and 'outside' seems to be a prevalent theme. It does well to illistrate the surroundings of the area in which the artist resides. Outside is good, but the fact that we're writing, and recording the song that we will 'lipsynch' to, helps enormously with keeping audio-quality consistant, and also allows for us to be a bit more creative with the filming of the 'performance'. Do consider this when planning-out your video shots, as this added dimention could make for a truly 'interesting' video.

FTP working for me too, so no problems.

I mentioned what I play in the other discussion, but I'll throw it here just so it's all in one place.

Bamboo Flutes:
Eb/E (lower pitch)
G (mid-range)
Bb (piccolo-ish range)

And I play piano/keyboard as well. I played trumpet once upon a time, but it's been a number of years. :P

I was also in a university choir for a time, so I can sing/hold a pitch decently enough. I just need to get used to singing with headphones on.

Outside vids do seem to be the prevalent theme. Luckily the apartment I'm moving to has a wrap-around communal deck/balcony sorta thing going on. I could easily run the mic cable or keyboard cables from the window to the office area, and get Heather to film from the window with me playing the flute, or the keyboard, whichever. So it would be kinda an overhead-ish angle. Might work pretty well.

Also, for the intro, I could totally see some humming, or wordless vocals coming in a few bars before the main lyrics come into play. I think it would help give that "soulful" or "human" feeling.

Moving right along.

Rob, the short story on the chicken.
He was/still is the mascot for Tuna's Patrol in boy scouts. The Chicken Patrol. They took their name from a previous patrol that turned out 2 Eagle scouts and were together until they graduated high school. That patrol was 4 guys and very well respected by adults and boys alike.

Needless to say Tuna's group started with 18 boys in 3 patrols. Slimmed down over the first year to combined numbers of about 10 which I took as my single patrol and offered them the chance to choose a new name. They took the name Chicken patrol. I churned out 5 Eagles from that patrol and kept 9 boyz together until they graduated. It is the largest patrol known nationally to ever stay together past their senior year. As a patrol they also hold about 6 other record's in scouting that may never be broken and a couple that had never been achieved before.

So now the chicken tours the states and soon the world and gets his picture taken with them on their journey. No one, adult or boys that knew the chickens wants to forget them.

For me, not one day goes by that I don't think about them as a group and all they have done. 8 years together with them embedded them all in my head, 12 years with several of them from cub scouts on.

Sorry dudes, I was out of town for 5 days enjoying an extended MD weekend. I will e-mail you tonight Noize.

I am hoping to get up in the mountains with my laptop/ux2/acoustic/vid cam and get a complete track but... it is rainy today so I will have to wait.

Alas, if it is windy up there I will have to record in my studio and simply lip sync the video in the mountains. Should be great footage though, I have a gorgeous spot in mind. I am going to capture video of me setting up the mic etc. for some possible intro footage before the guitar kicks in. Just some filler for the video crew.

A mountain-scene sound awesome Cap'n! I mean, c'mon... it's friggin' moutains! Mountains always makes things look cool. lol

I've been touching on the Nooners riff here and there... found that it sound nice as a slide-giutar line, as well. Prolly whree I'll go with it... kind'a Floyd'y.

I'm working on some creativity vomit to slop over the Nooners riff. We can use it, lose it, or let it inspire something new. I don't care. I'll post it on the FTP by this weekend. The purpose is to get opinions, not quality tracking etc. I'll post again when its done.

I'm working with the didj, piano (Art Vista Piano for teh win!), and vox. Can't wait to get home and work on this!

Also: Wish me luck, I applied to four recording studio internships around KC. If I'm lucky, I'll get to make coffee for people without getting paid. What a dream!

Oh hey, I just had another thought! I know a really talented compositor we may be able to have help.

There isn't ANYTHING interesting to get a scene of where I live, but I can be anywhere we want in front of a green screen. He's worked with Peter Gabriel before and he's doing a music video for a local band right now, so he may have some cool ideas. I'll see if I can get an interest level from him this weekend.

Cool, Quincysan! theWent had brought up green screening the other day. As that would be an option under this videos context. This video is going to be so weird.(good thing) lol

Good luck with the internship, man.Opportunities like that don't come to you, so kudos for going out there and finding them. I'm sure they'll appreciate your tenacity.(the one you want to work for will... built in filter!) Remember, one good tablespoon for every two cups of water.

I think he's talking about the coffee. ;)

Also, I got some info back from the fiancee. It's not a wraparound balcony thing like I thought, but a separate deck. Also, no runnign cables from window...something in the lease about not removing screens...bummer.

I'll figure something out though!

Edit:
Oh! but she does have video recording capabilities. She got a new camera that can record video and audio. But I think she still has her old cam still and it records video (but no audio) So shouldn't be any problems getting some footage. Wonder if I do something around the university. Seems theres some places where you can go out and get up on the roof or soemthing.

Here's some pics from around UIowa that she took:

Yup... the coffee. : )

Yeah, that is true, Cap'n. Showing where you're coming from, physically, is good to say "This is where I'm coming from... physically.", but there's also the "This is where I'm coming from... at the moment.", to consider, as well. Perhaps it should be part of the criteria of the video that we each show a scene of the setting-up of the shoot, and recording area, etc... ???

I don't know. That might be alot of 'Basement/Bedroom/Office' footage, eh? Suburbia! Yay!

I had never heard that coffee rule before...good to know though. Thanks Hue. By the way...I've been wondering since I joined HRC...what is your avatar? Rat fanged turtle? Tiny pink walrus? Neither of these seem likely but that's what I have come up with.

Would my Panasonic HDC-SD9 work for video? It's supposed to record in 1080p.

Ok, no more farting around. I called and arranged to borrow the $1800 martin acoustic, recruited a camera man, have my gear all packed and will be heading out to capture some video directly after work.

As previously stated I did write another more upbeat part for the song and although I will post it in full fo yall to hear, I can split them up for when I send it to Noize if needed.

Can't wait to get this rolling, also can't wait to hear the riff played on acoustic, the way it was meant to be :)

Alrighty, so I got some pretty decent footage. Suprisingly the audio wasn't horrible, definitely some wind though. I recorded some rough tracks in the studio and just played along to the headphones. Once I get a track I am 100% happy with I will upload it to Noize's FTP.

Also for the video folks, I did quite a few takes if you want them all? They are also 1080p .mts files, should I be encoding to another format before mailing?

Anyways, the raw footage with no dubbed tracks yet...

One thing I am unsure on?

Are we submitting parts that are in key for Noize to cut/loop or are we supposed to have a full song.

The riff recorded is less than two minutes so I assume it needs more. As stated before I have another part for it but would really like someone else to write out the bridge so it can be longer and be a true collab.

Well if it were up to me I would say that the entire song should be recorded by everyone so for example...say that it is 3:30 long then even a guy (me - lol) playing a shaker would play the entire song beginning to end. This would allow the producer (noise) to introduce the parts when needed. Cpt, if you get a chance, could you post a tab for the song?? This would help a lot to put everyone on the same page. Also, I could easily edit what you have to extend it to 3:30 long (or more) with what you have recorded already. I also have some ideas for lyrics which btw - does anyone know if there is a song titled Playing for Change?? It seems as if most I have heard are all covers thus far.

edit: great playing tripps!

Nice Cap'n! That'll do indeed.

I think it would be well served, outside of the various other instruments, to have another acoustic track of the very same riffs, that we could punch in and out of for added thickening and punch. No pun intended. Maybe another one of you, Cap'n?... playing a different guitar, in a different setting, perhaps??? Whatdy'a think?

Oh, that was just the video camera audio of me playing a takamine. I have a doubled track of me playing my friends new Martin that I recorded in the studio, I plan on re-doing again as I was not too happy with it. I will figure out the roots tonight and post em. I was in a toss up between the mountains and the boat harbor on the docks, maybe I can do another soon.

On the video captures.... Mpeg1 or DivX (which is based on MPEG4), does he want them downsampled to a certain resolution or should I just leave that to him. Once again mine are .mts files at 1080p, just want to make sure I get conversion right.

edit: Root Notes (heh, I just played them through my toneport tuner to figure em)

Verse : B Db A Gb G A D
Chorus: B G D Db A (A is only on the second time around for the ring out)

I played it out on a bass for yall to hear/download if you like.

Jeez, I haven't gotten any of these updates to the thread in email. And I know I pinned this thread to the top and its un-pinned now.

I've got some catching up to do.

I was going to be messing with some percussion this afternoon and was looking for the original BPM if it was 82 exactly or somewhere there about.

This friday, I will be attempting to lay down some congos loops. I've never mic'd the congos before, so we'll see how it goes. I only have the one mic stand so I'm thinking of giving the sm57 a whirl. But will prolly try out all three mics (57, 58 and neumann). I think the original loop is at 82.

Also, I couldn't download the nooners file from Cpt's profile, so I played it on the media player and tried to capture the sound from the soundcard. Not sure if that is gonna work or not. Is the original nooners file up on the FTP?

Noize, thanks, I got the mp3.

Unfortunately, I tried to record a congo track, and I am not happy with the sound I was getting. Also, my conga playing sucked wet donkey nuts, so I'm leaning towards scrapping that idea and just going with vocals. I have written about 8 (out of 16) bars for a rap verse...

Ya, I'm having huge issues finding a scratch drum I am happy with as well.

I know exactly what I want to hear to transition from an intro you can rap over into the guitar portion but I'm beating myself up trying to get it exactly how it should be to work that way.

You should just shoot a couple different version's up to the ftp and we can see how it fits in later as well. you might be suprised at what can fit later with a bit of tweaking.

Hmm, the rap I'm writing matches the rhythm of capn's guitar piecs very closely. I could prolly make it work with any beat, but it works really well with that guitar part.

I deleted all the conga tracks I recorded. They were really horrible, trust me. Maybe once some other instruments are added it will be easier to add them and I may try again.

Ya, that is why I'm beating myself in the head on a scratch beat for it. I'm trying to keep it extremely tight to the rhythm of the guitar part.

Do you have a scratch of any vocal bit's yet? That might help work a scratch drum track out.

Hey Deon, the guitar part is on the ftp. Give that a try now since you have the compatibility mode thing fixed. That might have been buggering things up.

Otherwise you can grab it here.

OK, it's sent to both you and Deon.

OK, then I'm thinking the ftp thing is on your end as well.

Do you have some funky firewall that might be cutting the ftp off?

I believe everyone else is getting in.

Maybe Australia is blocking you from getting the ftp hooked up.

And ya, its gonna be getting much longer.

I'm waiting on the final recording from Tripps for the acoustic and trying to bang out a scratch drum track to lengthen it out for others to mess with.

ok, be keen to take a look when that's done, be quite a "different" drum track im guessing, quite funky and custom precussive for that song.

i can get onto the ftp no probs now but i couldnt download it from there is all, but maybe i can now, i couldnt from here before, but now i can, something changed somewhere.

If your DLing with IE8 make sure you have compatibility mode on and then I might suggest looking to the right and clicking on the Page menu, then select Open in Windows Explorer. That will ask you to re-enter the login and password but will allow you to then drag and drop the file to wherever you want it.

Otherwise guys, install Firefox as it works just splendidly without any hiccups and you can drag and drop or click left click the file and it brings up a save menu right off.

I am guessing chrome does the same but I have not tried it yet in Chrome.

Coolo, I'm off on Friday and am going to work on a beat again. I think I might just do something completely straight hip-hop. I've been trying desperately to cross a hip-hop groove with a bit of a 4 on the floor flavor and I just keep ending up unhappy with it.

I've been working it thinking of your style of rapping as well so I wasn't just going at it blindly. I cheated a bit by listening to nearly all your stuff again and working from that.

I think I might need a switch to a less rock style kit as well. Maybe I'm just using too big of a drum sound and that is what is driving me nuts. I need to go old school jazz kit or lo-fi or something.

Hey noize, on the lo-fi kit sound, have you taken a look at the mini drumz from DSK? Its supposed to emulate some of those older drum machines, and they released a version 2 not too long ago. In version 2, they have an option for loading an sf2 kit alongside the drum machine, which I thought was interesting. I thought it might be worth looking at, and I've gotten some pretty decent results using it. (StarDust on t61 was an example using mini drumz version 1 and a breakbeat style) Anyway, it's a nice little VST that I turn to if I'm looking for a certain sound or feel.

Hmmm....my desk is shak-oh...train's going by again, doh!

Yep, I've got drum samples coming out my arse. I've just not come up with a complete kit I like on this yet. Nor a decent structure top the beat.

Although thanx to our local boy here Prince I think I've been inspired to give it another shot. The local public station here The Current is playing a ton of his more obscure stuff as its the 25th anniversary of Purple Rain and they are playing tons of his old stuff. I think a bit of inspiration hit after listening to some of it.

I recorded the verse and added it to the ftp. It's called "PlayingForChange-baceverse.wav" It is just the acapella and you can start it at the same time as the nooners mp3 in the multitrack. One bar of silence at 82 bpm and it starts in along with the guitar.

Let me know what you think/if you get it to work/line up.

Oh damn!!! And I'm at work when I read this, can't wait to hear it. Perhaps it will inspire me on some harmonies to add. I think once we get past this first stage and have a blueprint of the entire song, things will start moving quick.

Anyway, I have been stupid busy but do have an acoustic version of the riff with finger squeaks and all. I will try to upload it tonight. I'm not sure if I would consider my final version, but it's more fitting than the electric tone.

coolo, I'm going to get it now. I'll post if I have any problems. And lining up isn't going to be an issue here I'm sure. Hopefully I'll get a few minutes to try and drop a scratch drum for it just so we can get moving. I had an intro piece worked out that would let it drift into the guitar and rap, possibly rap over that as well, but I dropped it into a folder that was unmarked and now I can't locate the friggin thing.

I'll try the ftp from work as well and see if I can figure out what is holding things up. IF you are getting as far as the folder then its got to be something set on your end more then likely. I can get in with anything.

Try a dedicated ftp app like cute ftp or something like that. Or get friggin PowerDesk for god sake. I've never regretted the $29 it cost, or 19 or whatever it was.

Well, I basically just joined the forum but I might be interested in contributing if it's not too late and if I would only need to supply video (not separate audio). I play baritone sax by the way.

By the way, this is one of those inspiring ideas that combined with actually taking action gets flaming little bubbles floating up your spine all the way to your head.

Oh, and I am friends with a drummer, piano player, and a bassoon player. So I guess I could mention this to them.

Thanks guys. It's hard to tell without drums, but the timing may be just a teensy bit off here and there, but that's what happens when you record raps over no drums... Anyhow, I also feel like I may have been a bit too close to the mic (word clarity issues), so if anyone else feels that way let me know, I'll be happy to retrack. Also, if you guys want, I can do a backing track of "emphasis" vocals.

Kinley, we'd love to have you, but I'll let the people handling the mixing of the audio decide if a video feed audio track is going to be sufficient.

I had a small brainstorm on this just now; How about each of us goes walking around with like a hand recorder/voice recorder...something...and collect some noises from our local areas just say, walking down the street, or something. We can get those chopped up how we want, and crossfade them into each other....and maybe have someone start humming the root notes for the melody, and fade that into the acoustic for a bar or two, and then bring in the rest?

It was a thought, and I was trying to think in a worldly sense, since we're all spread out quite a bit. I thought it might be a cool thing to do.

Ok, so, I revisited the guitar riff that Cpt did and my verse, and decided I'm gonna do something with it. Of course if everyone else is still interested, I'd love if you all wanted to jump back on board. Otherwise, I'm just going to sample the riff and make my own song out of it. Ahem. I just uploaded an mp3 to my profile. It's Cpt's guitar riff sampled and looped, plus a drum loop that I created (hip hop style more or less), my verse I did a while ago, plus me improvving some singing hook ideas that need to be tightened up and redone. But I thought it might give some of you some ideas? If there are no takers I'll write another rap verse, throw some keyboard bass on it, redo the chorus and see where it goes... Anybody in?
