Curious - do you guys keep your recording computer(s) on-line?

If so, what protection do you use? And if its free, please pass on the info.

I have always kept mine off-line on purpose but am thinking its going to be a huge pain to register plug-ins (since most are on-line registrations) unless someone knows a work around?

free.grisoft.com for antivirus. It's all I've used for years.

AdAware and Spybot is good for free spyware scanners

And the firewall on my router.

Same here. I use a hardware router so that takes care of my firewall. Then I use AVG free antivirus as well. If I ever have troubles with resources being scarce, I'll kill all of the AVG-related stuff until I'm finished recording. I do the same with gaming.

AVG and Spybot S&D. Yessiree. Both are free and do a great job together.

IMHO: Avoid Norton and MacAffee like the plague. Jackware.

Most downloads go through the surfbox which is running AVG and Sygate Personal Firewall which are both free. I also have a hardware firewall and windows firewall running.

The studio box is on the network but only hits the internet on trusted sites by the makers of the software and hardware I use if needed to connect directly. I can disconnect it in the routers control panel so no outside access is granted.

Oh, yeah, Windows firewall, I always forget about that thing.

Ya, I rely on that for the studio box for sure. Its easy to turn on or off without any hassle at all. And if you forget its not very intrusive at all. Though Sygate is not that bad either.

My music computer is always on the internet, I use AVG 8 free which has spyware protection, and Vista's firewall.

i want to rely solely on AVG but i have a hard time since that one totally fatal error that required a windows re-install. if you look at the wiki page for it, you will see some complaints there too.

the thing just makes me totally nervous because of what happened long ago.

but my mcaffee is about to run out and i dont plan to renew.

what's 'jackware?'

vista firewall? mine was off. turned it on just now. what settings do you use, dan?

Hmm, I may have invented a new term.

It's my definition for a program that tries to take over a computer or use too many of its resources without a good enough reason to do so. Norton is legendary for this.

I use the default settings on Vista's firewall forty. I've used AVG since my Windows 2000 days and have never had it cause a problem, not saying it didn't in your case, but it's been very reliable for me.

yeha mcaffe uses way too many resources.

looked like there were a few options for the firewall. domain profile, private profile, public profile. i guess have all of those on?

If you just use the control panel app, you won't need to worry about profiles etc, they are preconfigured for general home use. Those would be if you wanted to get under the hood with the Administrative tool to control/add rules etc.

I just went through the wiki page on AVG and can't find anything that relates to AVG as a product actually being bad or having caused issues.

I did however find issues of other Anti-Virus products not being able to deal with AVG and its functionality.

I am now wondering if your crash with AVG was caused by another AV program that was not un-installed fully as it appears that has caused issues as the old AV program of some un-named companies leave behind warning bits and pieces that cause windows to lock up. Not only from AVG but from a couple others it appears.

I myself have used AVG free since I believe mid year of its first year out and installed it on at least 100 machine without any issues at all. We run it on everything here with no problems.

maybe i'm thinking of the ratings at the bottom. consumers ranked it 2 out of 10 and it failed to detect things half the time in tests. maybe i saw something else somewhere too.

when i had avg installed way back when, it was the only antivirus program installed. it's hard to remember exactly what happened, but i think it was this: i knew almost nothing about windows at the time and avg had found many infected .exe files. i think i just clicked 'fix' and it ended up quarantining system files or something. windows would no longer function after that. this was many years ago.

the fact that there wasn't a built-in safeguard against user stupidity was what made me mad. it should not be possible to do some things, or there should be a warning. maybe it's cool now, but i shouldn't have been allowed to do easily do whatever it was that i did, i think.

anyway i'm sure it was an isolated case and not likely to happen again, but it's hard to shake the feeling.

dan: ok thanks

I suppose that might be it.

I honestly don't know about the failed detection deal though. I'm pretty sure an app that downloads updates on an almost daily basis doesn't miss much. I know at work we run machines with AVG, Norton and a couple others and AVG is by far the best. I can run Norton and follow it with AVG and AVG will find what Norton misses so that tells me something right off.

And I'm talking about the free version beating out Norton which is not a cheap AV application at all.

But ya, its really hard to say what happened on your machine for sure.

i noticed that too, that AVG caught more stuff than mcaffe did for me once.

i'd really like to use it again. i know it's so unlikely i'd have another problem. if i just knew what happened and how it happened back then it'd be easy, but i almost felt like the program had made a mistake somehow. you think it's better than the other free ones out there? the kaspersky or whatever it is? i notice the free doesn't have active surf shield. do you think that matters or are you safe behind a firewall, and if so why bother with an active surfing shield like that?

A firewall won't protect you from malicious sites you visit or hacked sites that you visit. If you really don't want to use AVG, you can grab the RC of IE8 which includes basically the same feature and you can use Windows Defender to watch for other spyware/malware threats (actually WD is included with Vista so you're probably already using it.

All I know is between WD and AVG which does have a scanning feature as far as i know in the free version. It has stopped several web pages from opening and warned me of possible threats while surfing.

But between those 2 I've not had any issues.

Kaspersky is something one of our head guys in IT uses and he seems to really like it. Not heard him complain about it anyway.

I'm with Zekthedeadcow..... use Linux!!! But for all the Windows users out there, I can only give you this tidbit of advice.

Avast for Anti-Virus (Free)
WindowsDefender for Spyware (Free)
IE 8 /Firefox 3 (lots more security features added) (Free)
Windows Firewall or Router Firewall (free)

The "full-suites" kinda software like Trend and Symantec really slow your machine down and have way too many services running all the time.

You can disregard all of them if you simply avoid porn and software crack sites!!!!
