Yes, we have a gang war on our hands here in Vancouver and it is getting really frightening. The latest was last night when a 23 y/o woman was shot and killed while her 4 y/o son watched from the back seat. More retaliation is expected and I'm sure we will read about it this afternoon or tomorrow. I gotta say moving to the country is sounding pretty good right now.

That's rough man...15 in 11 days, man.

I want to take a jab at gun control here, but damn, it'd be lost in the tragedy.

I don't think they (police) really know what to do. They have doubled the task force to no avail. I'm worried and pretty certain it is going to get worse.

One way to start, when we find people that have killed somebody in cold blood, put a bullet in their head.

What? Are they trying to compete with the guys here in Philly?

We have had an issue with this type of violence for about 3 years now. And I guess they have bored with shooting each other. Now they have taken to shooting the Police. Two days ago, they shot and killed 3 cops, in one day. Coupled with the budget cuts that our mayor has put into place, there will be no new cops to take their place.

I think that the criminal element here has figured out that if you weaken the police force in a particular area, then you can take that area over with ease. All three cops, where from the same precinct.

And just the other day. My wife was headed to our corner store. She was stopped by a whole squad of police that had blocked the entrance. Turns out, that our neighbor was leaving the store, when a person came in with a gun shot to his chest. He was looking to get any help that he could. But, sadly dropped dead at her feet. She called 911 as fast as she could, but, it was way to late. And the gunman was still on the loose.

It had been awhile since I had to walk around with my knife opened in my pocket. But it is getting crazy everywhere. I have to escort my wife to where ever she needs to go these days. And she feels like a prisoner in our own home.

I hope that the economy gets better soon. Or, this may just be the tip of the iceberg of what is yet to come!

Rob that is terrible about the police and the events that your wife went through. I certainly hope that it doesn't escalate to shooting police around here. For now they are just shooting each other but this latest one really struck a nerve. I mean this lady was shot three times to the chest with a 4 year old in the car. I have not doubt there will be more and it is only a matter of time before someone other innocent person is killed. This is all too close to home.

Wow, Rob, crazy story, that's terrible.

Given the current economic state, with this bailout, er, stimulus package looking to increase welfare bases and do nothing to create new jobs (contrary to what is being said), I really suspect it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

People do what they feel is necessary. Some people resort to violence WAY too fast.

Sorry about all of those shootings, I got carried away. Killing is just how I express myself since I can't speak good English. My trigger finger is sore.
Updated 4:33 p.m.: Hundreds of onlookers gasped in horror today as ambulances, police vehicles and police lines were set up near East 53rd Avenue and Fraser, where a corpse lay under a canvas as police interrogated many onlookers.

Nazreen Dean said two white men knocked on the door of her brother's house, asking for two men. Dean said it was simply a case of mistaken identity and the two white men got the house wrong, but shot at her brothers anyway.

"They were just watching a movie. Someone knocked on the door downstairs and they ignored it. Then they knocked on the upstairs and they answered and that's when everything went crazy," Dean said.

Dean said her 19-year-old brother, Aleem Mohammed, was shot, and another brother gave chase. He managed to wrest away a gun and shot one of the two men, whose body is under a white tarp at the corner of East 53rd and Fraser.

Dean said her brother Aleem is in hospital.

"He's stable," said Dean. "They're operating on him at VGH."

Amir, 18, is also still alive, she believes. It's unclear whose corpse lies on 53rd Avenue, just west of Fraser.

"I know these kids. They grew up with me. They're not into gangs. I think it's just the wrong house and wrong people. Maybe they were looking for the people downstairs — we don't know them," Dean said.

Police cordoned off a four-block stretch of Fraser Street, as shell-shocked onlookers talked amongst each other and tried to piece together how such a violent event happened in their neighbourhood.

"It's very shocking," said Amarjit Kang, who walked a couple of blocks from his home to see what all the ruckus was about. "It's a nice neighbourhood. I've lived here for 18 years. We live near here. We are scared, too."

Please check back later for updates.

Yeah, it is crazy. We've had an increase in gang violence here as well, last year was a record for murders, and this year is starting off even worse.

Here its been car break in's. In broad daylight no less. Brave little SOB. He is working with 2 chicks. Our lot was hit just as I stepped out with a buddy for a smoke. We watched this guy waling over to one of the guys pick up trucks and it looked like he had a key or what not. Suddenly, crack goes the window. I yelled hey MF what are you doing. He took off like a shot and Jim and I tried to chase down to the car, but of coarse the plate was covered in mud and crap.

Turned out it wasn't just that truck. He had been in the lot for awhile and busted into 6 other vehicles. You early twenties scraggly ******. Looked like teeny bopper girl's in the car as well. Probly crack heads. But in 5 days he apparently had broken into more then 45 cars, all during daylight. We were the first to see him.

But he sends the chicks to use the stolen credit cards or checks and crap. I now carry a 18 pound lead pipe when I go out there. If nothing else I'll take out a window or one of the chicks in the car. But I doubt he'll hit us again.

Most of the shootings around here have been in broad daylight. This latest one was at 4PM. This is what has everybody really scared. Several of the shootings have been outside grocery stores and such.

Bring in the military! If the police can't get a handle on this then they have to bring in a strong presence. They are trying to recruit police around here read: lots of jobs...but nobody wants them... I wonder why? The people in this city are losing control of it and it is being taken over by gangs! And we are supposed to be hosting the 2010 Winter Games!! **** that! I want to move out but i dont' wnat them to win.

Yea, you're all right. It's starting. Unfortunately knives and pipes will do little in a actual event. My youngest daughter just got stuck with managing a good number of housing complexes on the wrong side of Kansas. I don't know whether to advocate a CPL or not. I'm not sure she is of the mindset to be able to use it well. Damn scary. In the mean time the gay side of the government is already starting to push through bills to limit and track ammunition sales. Sale ole broken theory. Take it away from the law abiding citizen and hope that it will tickle down to the thug. Fat chance. 99.9% of the effectiveness of firearm ownership is deterrent. Yet another Oxy-Moron.... Own one and never have to use it.... don't own one and the need will arise quickly. Of course if you are a public servant earning millions, living in a gated community, economically walled off from the problem, there is no problem. Same mindset as always, if you have a big enough income you deserve to live.

Beer Hunter, I hear ya on the not wanting to give up situation. My wife and I fell the same way. That if you move away, then you just gave an opening to some other punk to move in.

What there are trying to do here is increase the amount of cops in hot spots. This has lead to the increase of police shootings. Which in turn has lowered the police's tolerance to just about anything. Making them more likely to shot an innocent person. What a way to live!

On the news this morning, the police are all up in arms, due to a judge that would not allow the picture of a fallen officer in the court room. The judge felt that would show bias. And I agree. But the cops are now threatening to not protect this judge. And have him thrown off the bench. They blocked him from entering today. I think this shows how much the cops here are just itching to shot someone for just about any reason.

So now we have the added stress of the criminal element, and the police to have to be on the look out for. Which one will shot you first?

I thought about carrying a weapon again. But, I think that might just lead to trouble with the cops. Even with a license. I think I am just going to limit my exposure to the outside world for a little bit. Just go to work, and only do the essentials around town, and that's about it. Because, sadly, I live in one of the hot spots.

Ya know, not wanting to give up is one thing, but, at the end of the day it's about #1, doing what's best for you and yours.

Carrying a weapon is serious business. Personally, I am a firm believer in the right to keep and bear arms, my wife and I have thought about getting our conceal and carry before Obama and his gun hating cronies get rid of it, BUT, the big issue with carrying it is that you better be prepared to USE it, if you pull it out, and don't, it WILL get used on you.

Know your weapon, get comfortable with it, practice with it, etc...I haven't carries one yet simply because, while I like hunting, and am comfortable with a gun, I don't know if I could point it at somebody and shoot it...yes, if people were hurting me or my family, there is that motivation, but damn, actually shooting someone, a person...man...

I now what you mean dB. I have three confirmed kills in my 201 file. From Desert Storm. There, it was different. That was my job to do so. Here, with the cops more or less starting a war. I don't know if I want to get caught in the middle of that.

Being that I have training in hand to hand combat. And I know the best place to be when some *** hole is shooting at you. (That is where ever he is aiming at. Being that they never hit what they are aiming for.)I feel that I have a better chance then most.

I don't think that carrying a weapon around here with the cops being so touchy may be the best decision at the moment.

Kinda of hard to be a cop in these situations tho, I mean, people ***** about violence and gangs, then when they shoot somebody there is always public outrage cuz to somebody this person was innocent, or a father, or a son, when the vast majority of the time they were losers...

Look at the Rodney King deal, he's a scumbag these cops had to deal with allt he time, they lay the smackdown and people freak out.

We need more smackdown.

Yeah, I do wish that the cops would be more diligent with catching the jerk offs out there. And give them a good thrashing on the way to jail.

I just don't want to be a statistic of the innocent by stander.

Yeah. That would be good. Being that the last cop that was shot here, was shot by a F*#! that has a rap sheet with over 12 misdemeanors on it.

He should have been locked up, with the key thrown away. But, instead, he was out on the streets. He got into a fight with a taxi driver, when the cops showed up. And the F*#! produced a gun, and put three wholes in the cops chest.

Yeah, I agree that the whole system is without a doubt is broken at the moment.

I look at law enforcement like I do most public service type jobs, it seems the lower levels, like the beat cops, by and large honestly care and try to do the right thing, same thing with teachers in schools, local gov't officials and so on...it's when you get up the ladder that things get screwed up.

This is the biggest problem we have around here. The punishment doesn't fit the crime. Eligible for parole after 7 years when you have killed someone wtf is that?
In Canada us civilians can't carry concealed weapons. Only the criminals can!

Well we are up to 25. Last night it was like they were making up for lost time.
A man and woman were shot to death in separate shootings in Vancouver and Burnaby late Tuesday night as gunshots also rang out in Surrey.

All three incidents came within hours of police revealing a breakthrough in the recent spate of Metro Vancouver gangland shootings that included the arrest of UN Gang boss Barzan Tilli-Choli.

The Burnaby shooting occurred at 9 p.m on the 25th floor of an apartment complex at the 2300-block of Madison Avenue. The deceased woman was taken to Burnaby Hospital which was placed under heavy security.

A man who was also inside the apartment was shot in the shoulder and is expected to survive.

There were unconfirmed reports the Burnaby shooting may have involved innocent victims.

RCMP Cpl. Dale Carr, of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team, said police were unsure if the killing was gang related or domestic violence.

At around the same time, there were reports of shots fired near 68 Avenue and 131 Street in Surrey close to the scene of the shooting death of Andrew Michael Cilliers, 26, who was blasted in the driveway of a home in the 6200-block of 131A Street.

A witness said there were several shell casings on the street. It is believed an injured man arrived at an area hospital shortly after the Surrey shooting. Mounties had sealed off the area.

The deadly Vancouver shooting happened at 9:50 p.m. near 3rd Avenue and Kaslo Street in East Vancouver.

Insp. Bob Chapman, of the Vancouver Police Department, said when police arrived at the scene they found a man in his 20s slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle with blood on his face.

"It has all the earmarks of a gangland-style hit," Chapman said.

At least a dozen emergency vehicles were at the scene Tuesday night and several blocks were sealed off as a manhunt was conducted.

Chapman said two men dressed in black were seen leaving the scene.

Swanson Goch, who lives with his family near 3rd and Kaslo, said he was watching television when he heard "five pops and thought it was gunfire right away."

Tuesday night's gunplay came the day police said Tilli-Choli was one of the biggest threats to public safety in the Lower Mainland, and he’s now behind bars.

There has now been 25 targeted shooting in Metro Vancouver since Jan. 20.
Everyone around here is getting pretty scared. There were 2 more shootings last night. One of them was near the theatre that my daughter's frequent. So far it seems to be only gangs fighting it out and thankfully there hasn't been any innocent victims. The two main gangs fighting it out are the UN Gang and the Red Scorpions.

Here is a photo of the UN Gang

Yeah, those numbers do place Vancouver right 'up' there with ma D-town.

It appears that Detroits murder rate has reduced over the last year... until you take into account just how many people have left the city, then you'll see that it has actually gone up, as per-capita.

Just hope that the local music scene doesn't follow Detroits trend as well... THAT would be a murder of another kind. : /
