I was thinking – not too seriously - about starting a forum of my own over at invisionfree.com. It wouldn’t be a recording forum, as dB and others have that subject handled nicely. Besides, I have no interest in competition with friends. I’m not even sure I’d have enough time to administrate or moderate it. It’s actually just a whimsical notion at this point, as I haven’t come up with a theme or subject, but I have a couple of ideas.
Fun poll: If you were to start a forum, what would you choose as a theme or topic? I’m sure dB has loads of opinions and advice; probably the first of which would be “Ferggedaboudit!” hahaha

Jul 03, 2007 12:18 pm Herbs... I've been looking for a forum where people talk about Herbs. Your name is Herb, so it's perfect!
Jul 03, 2007 12:26 pm Anyone who thinks that's my real name has obviously never said "Herb Utsmelz" out loud.
Jul 03, 2007 12:36 pm Herbs are really good for eliminating smells....
Jul 03, 2007 12:43 pm I've heard our Herb is good at creating them...
Jul 03, 2007 12:47 pm You don't know the half of it. I've received threat letters from the EPA.
Jul 03, 2007 12:47 pm Thoughts on forums.
Not withstanding "Ferggedaboudit!", I have some thoughts...
I run a few forums, they can be time consuming, however, I get all wrapped up in developing it and such so if you get a canned script, somewhere to host it, then they do the heavy lifting...so that time is freed up right there. If it gets popular (does NOT happen over night) it can take a lot of time.
Forums are great for user-generated content, which rocks, thats less site content you have to create yourself.
As far as topics go, one is best off creating a forum of a topic they are interested in, knowledgeable in or wants to learn about. I started HRC cuz I had enough knowledge to help some folks, but knew I had a lot to learn, so it was win/win, I've helps lots of people and lots of people have helped me.
I will say this, be careful what you wish for...nothing wrecks a good hobby like making a living at it...if it gets sizable, it sucks the fun right out of it. There are times HRC is nothing but work...but, well, there are those other times too when it just rocks.
Jul 03, 2007 01:00 pm Absolutely, I wouldn't even consider it if it wasn't a prefabricated board hosted and maintained by someone else. I was toying with the subjects of photography and golf, among others. I have pretty good knowledge of both, although I can't PLAY golf worth a crap..

Jul 03, 2007 01:08 pm Slightly OT, how's the phpBB working these days? I know HostPC nixed it for awhile, but I'm curious as to if it's any better.
I just added phpBB to a 'somewhat' client's website for them, took all of 2 minutes with their ISP's automatic installer (not hostpc).
Then just configure the categories / topics, and there you go.
Jul 03, 2007 01:20 pm PHPBB will never be reinstated by HostPC, I am pretty confident of that.
I have tried to get my wife to start a photography one, it's one of her passions and she is really good at it...and I just golfed last weekend for the first time in 25 years...didn't do too bad either. Not great, but better than expected, bogied a couple holes...which I found pleasing.
Jul 03, 2007 01:29 pm Bogied a couple of holes after stowing the bag for a quarter century? <expletive deleted>...I hate you :-D.... I did manage to fire a 76 for 18 holes once though.
Hey, you said you run a few forums. What are the themes of the other ones?
Jul 03, 2007 01:38 pm The main ones are HRC and a mixed martial arts forum. Outside of that I mod a web development forum and help flame manage a couple of his as well as a support forum at my business site for support of a couple scripts I have out on the wild, wild web.
Yeah, a couple of the par 3's I got 4's on, the short holes, I got on the green first shot on both, then blew the putt...putting is an art unto itself...and I suck at it...I drove decently tho most of the day. Grand total of 18 holes I believe I got an 85 or so. I am the web dude for a really nice local course, the PGA guy there is a neighbor (and also being vicitimized by the psycho neighbor) so he gave me a free round for me, my dad, sister and bro-in-law over the weekend, with carts and a couple buckets to drive with so I could hammer a few before actually doing the round...it was a fun day but I am burnt to a crisp right now :-)
My dad is actually a really good golfer, since mom died he has lost about 50 lbs (which is good, not sickly weight loss) and he said he just can't hit like he used to, he hasn't gotten used to his new bod yet...
It was much more fun than I remember it being when I was a teen...I'll likely go again soon.

Jul 03, 2007 01:43 pm Bogied a couple ??
I thought I did really well when I only triple bogied 7 of 9. I've never broke 98 on a real course, but have a 60 best game and a 68 average in PGA Tiger Woods. Plus 3 holes in one in two years.
You're away.
Trivia: Tiger Wood and I went to the same high school, just 16 years apart.
My site is about..... ME

Jul 03, 2007 01:57 pm I shot 55 a couple of times on the old NES Open Tournament golf game.
The saddest words in golf.... "You're still away..."
Glenn, I'd start a discussion forum all about me, but my ego just isn't quite large enough. I'll leave that kind of narcissism for people like Oprah.

Jul 03, 2007 03:33 pm My sister is a golf instructor and I put together a site for her with Curium CMS... uhh... basically the early version of HRC...
springtraininggolf.com
I'm probably going to change CMSs because I'm running into a number of bugs and some of them are fairly critical...
Jul 03, 2007 03:49 pm When people start talking about code, my mind shuts down. I stick my fingers in my ears and begin humming loudly...

Jul 03, 2007 04:14 pm I didn't know you were a coder Herb! :)
Jul 03, 2007 05:49 pm never had much in the line of "bugs" ever reported on Curium, mostly just little junk that didn't really matter. But with Curium discontinued in the public form, yeah, you are better off switching.
I have, for my own personal use added serious upgrades to newsletters (customization/personalization of emails), member management (adding the grouping of members) membership newsletters (same personalization) and some intense security measures that I also added to HRC...it's actually quite a kick *** product now...next is adding optional demographical data to newsletter subscriptions to make emailing newsletters more granular and specific for one rather large health care/tort reform effort getting off the ground now for whom I am volunteering my CMS and time. The demographic option is gonna rock.

Jul 03, 2007 06:23 pm I second the notion that Curium rocks
Jul 03, 2007 06:26 pm well, i'm gonna guess some basic form of knowledge and comfort with coding would be necessary to run a website....i could be wrong, our graphics guy built our site *click my homepage* using 'go daddy' and some other 'website building' software...i have no idea what involved,i was in the studio =) i don't know the first thing about coding (except creating quotes on forums!).
Jul 03, 2007 06:28 pm but i do know we do very little maintenance on our site.
Jul 03, 2007 06:38 pm Over at invisionfree.com.. I haven't thoroughly investigated, but it doesn't look like any real heavy knowledge of code is necessary there. I think you choose templates and features and the like and the rest is handled. I can do rudimentary HTML if need be, but if it gets any more complicated, fergit it.

Jul 04, 2007 11:25 am Yeah, Herb, my site isn't really about ME, there is no forum either. But it's my favorite people, musicians, aircraft, a NASA info library, some articles I've written, and some asst'd mpgs. It's made with Sitebuilder, a cut n paste app from Verizon. VERY EASY ! !
Oh, yeah. I have ten songs on the download page from a grunge group that nobody can identify.
The music is pretty damned good and fairly well recorded but was never mastered, prob a demo. I bought a cassette tape at a yard sale for $1 and these songs were on it.
Anybody, please, download 'em and see if you know who they are.

Jul 05, 2007 04:43 am Appreciate it, N2u. It's good grunge, but I've sent it to five FM stations across the US, searched every online music database for every title, uploaded them to the news groups, and in three years no one has a clue.
I think they are mid-Western because of a couple of the titles, like "Knuckle Sammich". No one says sammich west of the Rockies.
And, "Hurts Like Dickens". I've only ever heard that in Philly. It's usually "Hurts Like THE Dickens".
The ten tunes have become one of my favorite albums, though.
Jul 05, 2007 07:35 am WYD, actually, there are so many tools out there, that a person can run a web site without every seeing any code. There are limitations to doing it that way, but it is possible. Myself, I'm a purist, I don't use of those tools, I right code, it's the only way to be sure it's exactly what I want and done exactly how I want it. With the do-it-for-you tools you are sometimes limited to templates, font types, sizes, layout options and such...

Jul 05, 2007 12:31 pm I'm from san francisco, and I say, sammich all the time, as do many of my friends, but to be honest it is us just being goofy.
Jul 05, 2007 12:44 pm I can't believe I'm revealing this, but "Sammich" is my wife's pet name for me. My initials spell SAM, and it went from there.
Oh fer cute.
Jul 05, 2007 12:48 pm My wife's nickname for me is various forms of "hey, *******"...or, that thought anyway...

Jul 07, 2007 04:01 am Coolo, you're from SF originally? I never spent much time there, but if you do a search on 'sammich' you get a million or more about BBQ sammich, tuna sammich, takin' your lunch, recipes, reviews, all about sammiches and 99% from mid-west.
Did you snag that from San Francisco?
Check out those grunge tunes if ya' like that kinda' music.

Jul 08, 2007 07:58 pm Glen, I got em downloaded as of tonight and will start listening. If by chance they are midwest, then I might know just the person to identify them if they can be. I'll keep you posted as I progress. Who knows, maybe I might even know who it is.

Jul 09, 2007 10:07 pm That is what came to me in the middle of this thread.
I said, "Self, there's a lot o' people in this forum from the heartland. They might have heard the Unknown band".
Thanks Noize, anything, including you don't have a clue, will be appreciated.
