Yup, I own 3 pairs, just respect their cord...pretty durable but not for a Gwar show.

I love the HD280, they're very clear and articulate. But they're not flat...no matter what their spec sheet says. The mid-lows are attenuated, and there's a slight midrange bump. They sound great though, spectacular.

Same goes for these as the AKG: take care of the cord, that's the point of failure I hear about the most with these. Great-sounding and comfy phones tho.

I've been using Audio-technica ATH-M40fs headphones for a while now and I have no complaints. They are very flat response and comfortable. They will cost around $100.

I too was looking for a good $100 pair of headphones couple weeks ago. I would have bought the AKG K240M (Monitor) but ended up with a pair of AKG K240S (studio model) the previous being discontinued as far I know.
So far I can say I am quite happy with my purchase

ok, so if they both not really flat, who do you think sounds better, more comfertable and less fragile?

and about the audio technica, it's cheaper, and the akg and sennhiser is the most expert in the headphones area as far i know...

be VERY CAREFUL when mixin' with headphones you'll kill your ears pretty quick if ya keep the volume cranked reguraly....get used to mixin' with 'em real quiet, with quick 'bursts' of volume not much longer than 30 seconds....i'm begining to think this is how i developed my 'permaring' that'll only get louder if i piss it off. them speakers have MASSIVE proximity effect when they're 'wispering/yelling' into your ears.....which brings something else up, the low end in headphones so 'flat' is pretty much outta the question, BUT you can get used to 'em...

i'd go with an 'open air/ear' style instead of 'isolation' headphones. they'll sound better and be more comfortable.

check your mix on your speakers as often as you can to give your ears a break (we're talking every 20 mins. or so)

what ever happened to PLUR?

I went with 20$ cans for tracking. Normally, your playback material isn't EQ'd, or mixed, or anything near quality, so it doesn't really matter if you have great sounding cans, the mix won't be processed yet, so it's still in dev stage.

I have some labtec lt830 that were great, i've been looking for them but not having any luck.

I think I'm gonna go with some 25-30$ cans from sweetwater when I'm ready in the studio. Closed back, so they don't bleed out.

Then I'll do the mixing and mastering on the reference monitors, only using cans for very in-frequent problem searches.

i like 'em for settin' compression, for some reason, i have troubble hearin' compression with my monitors, but in cans, it's great.

Don't underestimate the quality of the Audio-Technica's. Let your ears be the judge. My advice is to listen to as many makes/models as you can. Oh, and even better if you can bring in your own material (CD) of something you are familiar with.

Well, if you want the flatest for mixing the AKG's are the way to go. There arent many with a flatter response in that price range.

then the AKG K240S Studio is the one I would recomend. I have used them for years with very good results. They will work well for mxing if you must use headphones, and they are excelant for monitering while tracking as well.

Yeah, I've never really had the luxury to compare 5-10 pairs back to back. I usually mix on Mackie 824 monitors, but can't have them set up in my current space. I've gotten so used to listening and mixing with headphones that I almost prefer it except for checking the final mix. The AKG's 240 series cans are really easy to get used to. Technically they're not closed back so if the artist is wearing them you could get a little blead but not too much. Treat them well and they'll last for years !

I've actually been through more near field moniters in here then I have headphones. I'm sure I went through more then 10 pairs trying to find the ones that worked the best in here.

And I agree, the AKG units are so much easier to learn, Even though I dont recomend mixing in headphones, if you must they are some of the better truer sounding cans to use.

Hey there,

I have the Beyerdynamic DT250'S

They have great isolation and are really comfortable. They're about £75. What's more they sound amazing.

Here is a review in SOS.

The headphones you just listed are actually home stereo/audiophile headphones. They will indeed color the sound more then you would like them too.

Built on the same features as the SR60, but utilizes a 4 conductor connecting cable and larger ear cushions, the result of which gives a more open stage. The SR80 provides an improved bass resonance, which enhances the overall detail.

I dont think I would be using anything that emphasizes the bass frequancy at all. I can link you to about 30 other quotes like that one. And that one comes right from the Grado site.

They will give you a very false bass response when you mix. Then when you burn a Cd of the mix and put it in a car or bigger stereo you will find there is no bass at all in your mix as the headphones fooled you into thinking there was.

i think that maby they have a great bass, and the sr60 has a poor bass... or not?
and the final mix i do woth the monitors, i use the headpones just when i have to bw quiet...

Well then maybe they will work fine for you. As long as you are aware that they will indeed give you a boosted bass sound.

I own both the AKG 240M and the sennhieser hd280. Now if you are talking flat response, I would say the AKG 240M without a doubt. But, those sennhiser's are nice. I use them much more to sing with than the 240's. But, the last vocal trax I did I used the 240's with great results. It's nice to have both. If you're talking about recording a drummer you don't even look at the 240's you just hand him the Sennhieser's. But, if you want them to mix with then the first cans I would pick up would be the 240's. I did a lot of mixing with them back in the day before I had studio monitors. I really don't think that one is better than the other I just think they have different qualities. They're both very nice headphones.

The 240m is just the older version of the k240s, so they are exactly the same headphone.

Actually, the 240m has 600 ohms while the 240s has only 55. This allows the the 240s to get louder (taken from a sales rep at my local music store who sold me the 240s).

I have a set of the Equation RP-21's. They are very nice. I am having a problem with muted sound in one ear at the moment. I went to Equations web site and in their contact area, they say if you have a problem with their product they will replace it. I have contacted them and will fill you in with the results.

Well I spoke with someone from Equation today about my headphone problem, and it seems that my purchase is one year out of date past their 2 year warranty. ( I purchased in Aug 2007 ) But there is very little use on my phones so they gave me a return authorization and will be solving the issue. So I can say that yes they sound good and the company stands behind the product.

I just got my equation headphones back and I am truly surprised I sent them out and got them back in less than 10 days . And they sound great. I am impressed with their customer service, as well as the headphones.

I got a pair of Nox headphones for xmas and I must say they exceeded my expectations mainly because I had never heard of the company before, but they work really well. I have the in ear buds and even for that the sound is crystal clear. I sometimes even forget that I'm wearing them they are that comfy. Here's a link if you want more of their stuff www.nox-audio.com
