Radio Edit Timing

Guys, one of my songs has been selected to be on air sometime next month..

The problem is that the song is about 4:58,.. It is supposed to be 4:15 based on my original arrangement but for sales purposes, i was pushed to insert a ~40 sec VO intro on top of it.

After everything was set, the radio guy told us that the timing is too long, and most probably the intro will be cut out and something else but he didnt mentioned the timing as i forgot to ask..... no i will not call him again.

If i should edit them out, what is the timing that i should be aiming at, really, as we're trying not to lose the precious VO (of a "somebody" at my place)... this is so messed up/

For most radio I would say you should be aiming for under 4 minutes.

Someone cut the whole intro to my 'Little Rug' tune on their show a couple of months ago, made it sound really odd, but it's hard to have creative control over someone else's project, so if poss i'd go back and edit it down to the time they're prepared to play, a radio edit, otherwise you don't know where they're going to cut or edit it and you might well be dissappointed. If someone's going to do it might as well be you i reckon.

a a typical radio edit would be around 3:40 or less. If in doubt, time a few songs that station plays. Chances are they fall in between 3 and 3.5 minutes.

The station I was played on a few years ago was adament about no longer than 3:30 and if punk then no longer than 2:00

whats with the VO intro? I wouldn't think a station would allow a VO to be broadcast...thats what DJ's are for.

The VO part is the creative intro of the song- I mixed it as it was derived from a movie or something....

first it didnt mean much to me but after a few listenings, the vo is really something for the song...

I think after all the advice, i'm giving two versions of the song.. one with the vo, and one without it.... i'll try to fix the timing to less than 4 mins...

thanks guys..

Aaa cmon tadpui.. you know well that your comments, vst links, freebies, or every word you've put down in here means that you should own the glory too... I really feel that this airplay is HRC's own success, for the determination and endless support for independant musician all these years.... this really proves that this site's objectives really work.

Consider this yours too Tadpui.. you earn it!!

Thanks btw!!!!!

Hey many congrats ciinx. I still remember hearing my first tune that made it on the radio. Still gives me the willy's now. Wait till it gets national airplay, then the willy's really get ya going. Even as jaded as I might be now, I still get a little jolly when I hear my stuff in a commercial or another bands tune I enginered, its all good.

Again, congrats and good luck. Keep us posted as to what happens.

ciinx, great to hear it went national. What is the band and track name it is being played under. I will try a search for any of the stations in Malaysia that might be broadcasting on the net.

Really, I was the first? Glad I could help. :-)

tell me what you think of it!

guys! please add BOM productions (email:[email protected]) so that ppl will note the group of ppl i'm involved with so far to get things done. I'll link HRC to the page for more exposure! (darn this is my secret weapon.. trully i'd hate telling ppl where i learn things from lol)

ciinx, WOW, that is pretty tight. I gotta go listen again for sure. The guitar playing is great for sure, very dramatic. The vocals are very powerfull, even in a foreign language they still are very moving.

I sent you a request to add for my space. Tuna is going to try and make my page look a little better this weekend as I dont have a clue, or time how thye set their pages up.

And hey, lining to HRC would be great. Ya cant keep it a secret forever ya know.
