Is it impossible to get an earlier version of Sonar now?

I've been using CEP 2.0 for the last few years, and I'm quite familiar with it...but since I got a new system and a new soundcard, I've been seriously entertaining thoughts of bumping up my multitracking software.

I don't really have a lot of cash to drop on something right now (I'm doing my 'starving college student' thing), so the Steinberg line is out. I've been very intrigued by what I've read about the Sonar line, though, and was considering making a jump into that. However, I really don't want to drop a lot of coin on the newest version, particularly if it ends up being something I don't like or don't find ultimately useful.

So I was wondering if there was anywhere that one could obtain a legal, unpirated version of Sonar 3? I realize that most companies discontinue retail sales of the older versions once a newer one comes along, but there's normally some product still floating around somewhere at a big discount.

Any help would be appreciated.

eBay would be my only suggestion.

Steinbergs Cubase SE will run ya 99 bux on musicians friend, and is just like it's big brother except you're limited to 48 audio tracks and like 16 vst's or something like that.

Ummmm, no, that would be illegal. Read the license. You DO NOT buy copies of software used from eBay, it's against damn near every end user agreement and if eBay ever finds people doing that they take them down, if the software makers find out about, THEY make eBay take them down.

You best bet is to find a store that still has a few copies of 3 that they maybe have not sold yet, maybe get it cheaper.

Here is something interesting

service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

You have a competitive product I suppose, and 2 has a free update to 2.2, which is really decent.

a lot of sellers on eBay are storefronts that have a great selection. they sell new, unopened, unused products. nothing wrong with that. see if any of them are selling older copies of the apps you're looking for.

looking at eBay's policy, they're ok with reselling copyrighted works...they say it's generally OK and to consult the lisence agreement of the item and 'your attorney' to make sure that its legit. hehe, your attorney.

It looks like Sonor does NOT allow resale, but apparently Cakewalk used to...go figure.

Yeah, I'm not hanging out at Cakewalk's forums any more, them's some hostile forums over there, no fun at all.

Anyway, yes, they will let you post anything, but, they will also take anything down given the first threat from the manufacturer of the product or another member pointing out anything illegal. Hell, flame and I sat on eBay one day and saw a few illegal auctions going on once, it's all over, they can't watch it all, but they WILL take action if something is reported.

Thanks for all the replies. Here's a couple additional questions:

1) I didn't realize Cubase SE was only $99. I looked at all the product specs and it seems to have a lot of good stuff on it. I don't really use MIDI (and have no MIDI in with my soundcard), so some of the stuff might not be terribly useful...or maybe it will, I dunno. I have scant experience in MIDI. But does SE have a lot of on-board non-VST effects? Or are all of its effects VST? Also, is it relatively easy to use once you get to know the software? I searched all over the place for reviews and couldn't find any.

2) Given the current trends in the higher-end software, is it better to start getting into the Steinberg line, or the Cakewalk line? I keep reading good things about both, but don't really understand what the major differences are between the two.

Thanks for helping a confused soul out.

also...db, I'll look into the Sonar 2.0 competitive upgrade, but I'm not sure that I have either the manual OR the original disc for CEP anymore...that's what moving 6 times in 3 years will do to you!

Cakewalk vs Steinberg is like Ford vs Chevy, just personal opinion. in my eyes today there isn't much of a difference between sequencers, they all do pretty much the same thing. I'd wager that Cubase SE has mostly (if not only) VST's, as that is steinbergs creation. MIDI is good to have around just in case you wanna get into it (which trust me, you do!). Any new app is gonna have a learning curve, and Cubase SX (older brother of SE) has a pretty steep one, not gonna lie, but it's a great app. I've used Cubase SX in other peoples studio and it is a solid app. Cubase SE is also upword compatable, so it's what I would be looking at.

Sonar does not natively run VST's, only DXI's, but I believe Cubase will run both.

Loki is right, there aren't really any major differences, just two different companies making them, they will both more than get the job done for you. If you don't have the big money, perhaps MultitrackStudio can work for you too, www.multitrackstudio.com

Don't forget about possibly upgrading your version of CEP to Adobe Audition, @ only $69 it's a pretty big improvement over CEP. Even if you still end up buying a new program such as Sonar, AA's wav editing features are well worth the price.

Thanks for the additional replies. I'll take a look at the demo of Multitrack and see what it's got.

I'll also hem and haw a bit over the Cubase/Sonar thing. :)

Olddog, is the AA wav editor significantly better than CEP?

MultitrackStudio may surprise you, don't let the price fool you, it's a pretty darn powerful recording app...if I wasn't already so married to Sonar I'd be using it, it's my second choice.

I would say so. There are several new tools as well as improvements in existing ones. VST's are now supported as well.

The demo of AA 1.5 is fully functional for 30 days give it a try and see if you feel it's worth it. :) At some point the option to cheaply upgrade from CEP, will be gone, and the next major release of AA you may find yourself wishing you had the cheap upgrade path still available. :)
