MIDI controllers, Any of you guys use them?

I've been thinking about getting a MIDI keyboard to use with FL Studio. I'd like to be able to pound in parts for drums and the like. I've notived some like the Oxygen8 and the Edirol, that have extra control knobs and sliders. Seems like those might be of good use in hands-on control of software controls.

Have any of you used one of this type of keboard/controllers? If so, which one would you recomend?

Thanks, Terry

I havne't used it, but I am seriously looking into an Oxygen 8 myself, I am just waiting to find a few more user reviews and such on the internet, since they are relatively new.

Novation have just released a new controller keyboard which looks like the sexiest controller in the world - check it out!

I'll get round to buying one of these one day :)

As for programming drums with pads, there are a few choices out there - but my alligance (sp) lies with Akai ('cos they rock), so I would reccomend the Akai MDP-16 Controller:

Hope that helped.

I have also been looking at the Edirol service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

It seems to have few more features than the Oxygen8. I was hoping to hear from someone who has used one or the other to get an idea of how well they work.

Thanks for the replies, Terry

i love the edirol's and the new novation remote. next paycheck [granted i have enough left over], im picking up the novation controller.

controllers are excellent for work with softsynths. some things just cant be dont practically with programming alone.

OK I've looked at the Novation service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

It is twice as much as the Edirol. What is it that you like better about the Novation? Is it just a better quality controller or does it have controls that the Edirol doesn't?

I know the Velocity sensitivity makes a difference. Is the Novation better in that respect?

Thanks, Terry

M Audio also makes larger, more keys having versions of the Oxygen 8, called Radium 49 and Radium 61 (www.midiman.com/products/midiman/keystations.php). I'd like to get my hands on one of these as they offer more octaves ready to be played at any given moment.

It's all about the controls.

I guess it also depends how indepth you are at editing. I know how to use ASM synths pretty well and as a result I often dive into a preset and tweak it to make it sound how I want it to. If you do this amount of editing the Novation will shine.

I think the Radiums are replacements for the Keystations. The Keystations were of notoriously poor quality. The touch sensitivity wore out very quickly. I hope the Radiums have solved this problem...

For most users the Oxygen 8 will work just fine. For those like jues and myself who go very deep into the workings of our synths the unit from Novation is probably the better route. I use a full size controller from Fatar 88 keys, piano waited, velocity and key after touch and plenty of control via pedals and sliders and buttons. But for quick and easy portability I would personally look at either the Oxygen or the unit form Novation. but for your use Terry I would probably opt for the Oxygen 8.
