Anyone know any good free ones? My girlfriend's laptop has apparently been infected.

Yep, and go to Spywareinfo.com and look for Spybot Search & Destroy. That is the best app I have found.

In fact dB is the one who recommended it and I've been using it ever since.

Adaware and Hijack this also work great. But be aware Hijack this should be used with caution as it will list all kind of system resources as well, so you need to know what you are looking for.

Apparently they also make a version of Clam AV for windows. WinClam or something like that I think it is. It's supposed to be a pretty thorough virus scanner as well. I use AVG myself.

For spyware/adware, if you don't mind paying a small license (20 bucks for a year or something like that) Spyzooka is supposed to be the end all be all spyware killer.

I use AVG for anti-virus and Windows Defender for spyware. I think I'm going to upgrade to the paid version of AVG only because I feel guilty having used the free version for so many years. :D

I like NOD32. Haven't had any problems ever since I started using it. AVG is pretty good too if you're looking for a free AV.

If you do decide to purchase, Trend Micro's PC-Cillian is a fantastic e-mail scan\spyware\virus\firewall piece of software. I think it's around 40-50 a year but well worth it in my opinion.

The main reason I like it is I can have it on while gaming or recording with little impact.

I run SpyBot and AVG. Haven't had a problem in years, it seems. But then again, I'm pretty cautious as to where I go and what I do on the Web. No MySpace, and I NEVER open an email from a sender I don't recognize.

AVG makes a Linux version. I'm thinkin' there must be a reason (?)

Armchair analysis:

1. Fewer viruses target the Linux OS because it has fewer users.

2. Fewer people use Linux because it's a pain in the *** to set up.

I once had a high-maintenance girlfriend that required less coddling and attention than Ubuntu. She wasn't worth it either.

That is all.

hey, im using a Mac for recording, is it true they dont need protection?

Or is there just "less" chance of a virus?
I only use it online to update stuff so far, but you never know when i might use it online all the time.

Actually, I have found Linux in the newer releases very easy to set up and very nice, I just don't want to have to retrain my wife...

Yeah, actually I would be running Linux on at least one of my home PCs if I could get it to work with a Linksys wireless. Not, so it's one strike and yer out.
