what does it sound like?

my guess is the closest thing would be thunder...or is it a single transient with rumble after...wait, thunder does that too DOH!

I have. When I was a kid we lived pretty much in the backyard of a Naval air station in Virgina Beach. Around here they are not supposed to go super sonic over land but sometimes it happens. As a kid I remember it sounding like thunder only louder. lol I believe it also echoed off too but again I was a kid and its been a long time ago. I do know that the windows in our house rattled so hard I thought they were going to shatter.

I've heard them, it was a long time ago though. It's lower pitched than thunder and more concussive and rattled the windows sometimes.

i lived in orlando for 13 years. the space shuttle returning home scared the crap out of me many, many times. i have been in the den, at times, quietly interfacing with my computer, and have heard what i took to be the world ending. yes, the windows rattle. if i'm quiet and thinking when that happens, i tend to shout a curse word, loudly. it always takes a few seconds to realize what it was.

it happens in the middle of the night often, too. at such times, i've sat up in bed, scared, trying to figure out what it was. then i realize, the space shuttle. or else, the sound works its way into your dreams and turns it into a nightmare.

the shuttle's sonic booms are really, really freaking loud. bombs going off. you hear the windows rattle!

Yup, grew up in very rural states and the USAF used to play bomb that barn alot. Big Boom. Couple of fighters would come ripping by just over the tree line and you would be like "oh **** cover your ears". Streighten the pictures on the wall when ya get home.

You shouldn't be hearing them anymore... the FAA banned commercial supersonic flight over the US years ago due to complaints similar to fortymile. And the military doesn't like to deal with the complaints either.

I grew up in the flightpath of the airbase in Battle Creek so we constantly had A10s and various other fighters playing "spot the pot" over cornfields... drove the militia crazy...err... crazier :)

We used to have jets fly over lake huron, where I grew up and do the boom thing. It's pretty similar to when there's a big lightning crack real close: large thunderous boom, that shakes everything!

The missus keeps wanting to hear one, as she's never heard one either, but I haven't heard one since I was a wee lad, 30 or so years ago.

I remember when I first came over to the States (California) and was enjoying a morning cup of coffee when there was a huge sound (like two bombs going off one after the other). The whole house shook, and the windows rattled to the point I thought they'd break. Being fresh in from London my mind went immediately to bombs.

Space shuttle redirected to California, apparently.

I heard one once when I was younger. I can't remember how loud it really was but I remember asking my dad what made the noise.

Recently (last summer) we had lightning hit a hydro substation which is about 50 feet from our home. I'm guessing that the sound would be similar. It never broke any windows but it sure shook the house. Scared the crap out of me.

Gotta figure out a way to harness the power of lightning. It's gotta be able to power more than a few homes.

yeah it'd be cool to have lightning rods connected to the power grid, when one gets hit, the closest ppl get a bit of free energy...i don't know how they'd meter it though.

Sounds like an application for the world's biggest capacitor!

I wonder if they make them in the kilo-ferod range hehehe...

I vaguely remember being outdoors with my dad when I was about 6 years old and hearing a big boom. He pointed to a plane in the sky and said it was a sonic boom. Very fuzzy memory though...

TC, Leeloo was the sexiest thing wasn't she. I still watch that flick when its on cable.

On the Sonic Boom thing. Heck ya, as a kid we lived in the flight path of the air reserve base here. Also my uncle was a commander at the air base in Fargo/Minot ND. I was actually given several rides in many different de-commissioned fighters, both prop and jet. And indeed it does rattle the living crap out of the windows.

The reason the Shuttle has such a loud, definitive boom is that the shuttle is usually exceeding Mach 2 when you hear it. At least down to about 25,000 Ft or so. When you are in its path after re-entry you will hear and feel the sonic boom. The intensity rises as it gets closer to the ground but the fact that it is getting slower doesn't make much of a difference.

The sonic boom is actually two shockwaves very close together; one off of the nose and the other off of the wings.

This last landing by Atlantis at Edwards AFB was LOUD !! I live just 20 or so miles frome the base.
