honestly what is the difference between a sm57 and sm58? besides the wind screen thingy... do sm57 and sm58's sound the same on toms? and on amps? becuase i have used sm58's on amps and they sound just as good, to my ears exactly the same, on amps.

what is the differnce?

because i guess if they are the same, the 58 would be better cuase at least you can do live vocals with it.

58's are more vocal/acoustic instrument mikes. You could try them on drums, but it might be pretty high SPL's for it to work it's best. 57's would be the choice I would personally go with if only the two are available.

I've been told that the 57 and the 58 have the same mic cartridge.

I think Walt said one time that they use the same capsule, just positioned slightly differently in the housing.

The SM58 has a slight presence boost in the midrange, and a low-end rolloff. it's intended to be a handheld microphone for vocals in a PA system.

The SM57 is more flat across the spectrum, and is intended to be used on high SPL instruments. It has a slightly different low=end rolloff.

Here are the frequency charts for each from Shure's site:

The SM58:

Didn't CocoFromScotland do some experimenting where he took the windshield off his SM58 to use it as a 57? It was s while ago. He loved the sound.
So I think the capsules may be the same, or very similar. dB-Wan's frequency charts seem to agree. The pop shield could very well be the reason for the smoother response in the 10K range.

57's are more directional. From memory the 57 has a larger peak at 6kHz or something as well.

I think the 57 and 58 are virtually the same mic, with the 58 having a better windscreen.

CS has it nailed. The mics are very similar with just those couple of tiny differences.

I've found in my use that the 58 is about 10db softer.

57s and 58s have both varied over the years, they've gradually changed, but ime, if you take a 57 and a 58 from the same period and take the windshield off the 58, you basically have two very similar if not identical mics.

Here's a take on it by somebody who at least purports to be a former engineer at Shure:

I was a microphone engineer at Shure.

The SM57 and SM58 are essentially the same, except that the SM57 was intended mainly for instruments and the SM58 for vocals. The SM58 has a ball grille that acts as a pop filter. The two mics have the same proximity effect at the same miking distance.

Because of its smaller grille, the SM57 lets you get closer to it for more bass boost. But if you are 2 inches from the diaphragm in either mic, they have the same bass boost.

They have a slightly different response at high frequencies because of the acoustical effects of the different grilles.

Hope this helps...

But, this being the internet and all, who knows what's up and what's down.

If you look at the frequency charts I posted above, there are definite differences in the response patterns. The SM58 definitely has a higher output in the midrange than the SM57. Whether its because of the windscreen or differences in the internals of the mic, nobody seems to definitively know.

yeah... I guess it depends on how much spit your vocalist gets on it... :)
