I know this can be a touchy subject, but it's been a while since we've had a good heated debate around here.

Yeah, Minnesota is passing legislation to keep people from protesting at funerals. That's just tasteless, classless and friggin lame. Let people mourn. I understand people disagreeing with the war, disagreeing with our international relations, etc...but to take this level of campaigning is disgusting.

"I understand people disagreeing with the war, disagreeing with our international relations, etc..."

That's no excuse for disrespecting a soldier, at his funeral or otherwise. I don't care what ANYONE'S stance on the war is, for or against, you don't disrespect the troops.

I think a lot of anti-war people get this idea in their heads that our troops WANT to be over there killing people... sure, some of them do, but I'd be willing to be that 99% of them would rather be at home with their families then fighting in another country.

Couldn't agree with you more...

I would also venture a guess most of the soldiers would like to have their countrymen supporting them than disrespecting them in this way...I have an indiscribable disgust for this type of protest.

ya know, i kinda have an issue with this 'mandatory respect for all troops' and 'all troops are heros no matter what' thing...i know plenty of friends in the servise and quite honestly, they're mostly regular guys, a few even do tons of drugs very often, and i know one who is just strait up psycho....just about every one that i know in the military (family and friends) signed up either for the educational benefits, or the sign on bonus, or just liked to shoot things....i have yet to hear anyone say out loud "i wanna join the military to protect my country" not once, ever, period. what they do IS hard, and is honorable, but to demand respect just because they went through it? hey, it's voluntary...i could understand it a bit more if ya get drafted and survive, cuz that SUCKS!...anyway time for lunch

Did some of those folks miss the Enlightenemnt or what?

Now I'm a spiritual man but that kind of hard line 'religion' gives spiritual people of all creeds and faiths a bad name.

I hear that the Christian right is a powerful force in America but is this woman representative of that socio-political element? Does anybody actualy know people like that?

You just don't get elements of the Christian Church like that in U.K, at least not in the media. Perhaps it's a classic case of our old saying 'only in America...'

Then again perhaps it has been publicised in order to harden public opinion in favour of the war and to direct attention away from a very sticky situation... I wouldn't put it past the American media.

I can only speak for myself, but I didn't say anything about "mandatory respect", I said to not disrepect...big difference, I don't think this sort of protest has any place at most any funeral, soldier or otherwise.

oh, don't get me wrong, protesting at a funeral is low down....i'm just commenting on this social norm we have of 'thank a man in uniform' ect...it's almost tabu to speak badly of any solder....everyone's got all these 'support your troops/aids awarness ribbons bla bla bla, it's that kinda stuff i was refering to....

Nobody seemed to have a hard time speaking badly about the soldiers in Abu Ghraib...

I don't think showing respect for a soldier is a bad thing, I do hear what you are saying, but regardless of the motive, they are there performing a necessary job...

I think the "thank the man in uniform" is a conservitive backllash... recovering from an antimilitary mentality that covered a couple generations from the sixties.

Theres people who after Fahrenheit 911 came out walked up to me and called me a murderer for having been in the military. I even had a resturant refuse me service while I was traveling on duty back in 96.

One of our problems is that America is a big country ... and it's filled with all kinds of people... most of us are normal... but it only takes a handful on the far right or left to really **** things up for the rest of us.

Flashman: Basically, no the lady isn't representitive at all. When you are so "christian" that Fox bashes you there is something wrong. :) Fox being the unofficial news channel of the Republican Party... which is dominiated by Christians... If CNN (the unoffical news channel of the Democratic Party) was bashing someone on religious issues then they may have more popular support...

Being that there is more diverse protestantism over here we get some pretty crazy churchs... atleast the UK is generally only split between Catholic and Anglican... we on the other hand are working on two Anglican churchs, a couple Baptist, Catholic, Penecostal, the "independent" churches (which normally cause the problems)...

basically read the bible... and find every point that can be disagreed on and creat a chuch for it... then split based on ethnicity, again on location, again on budgeting, and again for the hell of it. I've heard of churchs splitting because of where refreshments are placed after service...

example in joke format:

Walking across a bridge, I saw a man on the edge, about to jump. I ran over and said: “Stop. Don’t do it.”

“Why not?” he asked.

“Well, there’s so much to live for!”

“Like what?”

“Are you religious?”

He said: “Yes.”

I said: “Me too. Are you Christian or Buddhist?”

“Christian.”

“Me, too. Are you Catholic or Protestant?”

“Protestant.”

“Me, too. Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?”

“Baptist.”

“Me, too. Are you Baptist Church of God or Church of the Lord?”

“Baptist Church of God.”

“Me, too. Are you original Baptist Church of God, or Reformed Baptist Church of God?”

“Reformed Baptist Church of God.”

“Me, too! Are you Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1879, or Reformed Baptist Church of God, Reformation of 1915?”

He said: “Reformation of 1915.”

I said: “Die, heretic scum,” and pushed him off.

thats funny as hell, but true, which is sad...

It's kinda funny that 99% of christian religions are separated by 1% of doctrinal differences.

I think a quiet visit during the wee hours by a coupl'a bored SEALs would be slightly more gratifying in this case... just quietly make them disappear .

"Father forgive them....they know not what they do"...what a compasionate thought. Too bad her church doesn't understand that verse. I think that a Christian wishing and saying for others to "Go to hell" is one of the worst abominations one could commit.

Christians are just human, with human emotions and free will. Not that I will ever condone the sort of activity that we are discussing in this thread, but forgiveness isn't easy whether Christian or not.

I am a Christian and lead what I feel is a good life, but I still wish people like Saddam Hussein, Osama bin Laden and other like them nothing but the fires of hell.

I just heard this AM that michigan has passed legislation that says protesters have to keep 500ft from a funeral. Plus, they may have to acquire a permit before being able to assemble.

Plus, congress (MI) may be able to charge for the permit as well.

While I'm usually against things like charging people to excersise their first amendment rights, I am all for letting mourners take care of their business. It's not like funeral go-ers are hootin & hollerin, making all kinds of ruckus or anything. They're just minding their own business, mourning.

If this stops naer-do-wells from bunking up someone's funeral, then I think it's worth it.

It's a shame when you have to pass laws about something that should be common courtesy.

Just when you think you've seen just about everything in your life, some idiot or group of idiots will always remind you that you haven't.

I wonder if these people know how TRULY hard it is to bury one of your children. Yet, devistated parents have to deal with this kind of thing at this point of time? These people make me ill!
