short vacation destinations

My wife and I have our 10th anniversary in April. We were planning on some cool, long (one week +) trip somewhere neat. However, I recently accepted a full time job that will end up screwing me out of the time off I had planned since I won't have the vacation accrued, so, we are now thinking of a long weekend (like Thrusday night to Monday or something) somewhere, like a Vegas trip.

Only problem is we have been to vegas and we are trying to think of somewhere else with charter flights like that. I suggested San Francisco, shes been there, I haven't, we've been to Chicago and other places we thoughts about. Nashville was another idea, didn't trip her trigger much.

Any idea for a decent 4 day vacation somewhere domestically?

Niagra Falls, NY/Canada ...picnic on Three Sisters Islands.

Mackinac Island (pronounced mac-in-awe) Michigan ... stay at The Grand Hotel, bike/horse/carrage ride around island, lots of historical sites... and more famously ... fudge... everyehere fudge...

Sanibel Island, Florida ...beach.

grand hotel = $$$ plus more $$$. there's others on the island that are cheaper, if you don't need the statement 'we stayed in the grand hotel'.

also, there's the porcupine mountains, Ontanagon area. I haven't been there, but hear it's nice.

Shouldn't be too far of travel, either.

Niagra Falls, hmmmm, not a bad idea...had thought about NY as well, for some reason my wife doesn't care to see NY, not sure why, I'd love to sometime.

Mackinac Island is a good idea too and not too far, not sure how much of a factor money is, my year+ consulting I did pretty well, but in the interest of longer term security and benefits, and to ease my wife's nerves I took the full-time gig...

Thanks for the input guys.

I used to live within a 15 minute drive to Niagara Falls. Very nice place, just think of weather. April in Buffalo/Niagara Falls is not exactly warm. It'll still be in the 40's, maybe 50's if you're lucky. The falls is really beautiful, but I recommened going there in the summer time. This way you can really walk around the falls, parks, and the city as well. Buffalo, which is very close by has some very good places to visit. Lots of local music; blues and jazz typically. Tons of good restrurants and some brewpubs. There is a great modern art museum. And of course, you'd be close to a bunch of pro sports teams. Toronto isn't too far either, great city to visit as well.

Another note, Boston is a fantastic city to visit if you've never been there. There is so much to do there (and surounding areas; Cambridge). One of my favorite citys hands down.

I backpacked the Porkies a few years ago and it's very nice... I hear Pictured Rocks is "better"... but the overview of Lake of the Clouds at porcupine mountains was probably one of the best "views" I've ever seen.... besides the roof of Sacre Coeur Cathedral in Paris... or the top of the Arch de Triumph at night...

But the coolest thing about the porkies is I was charged by a black bear the very first night :)

but yeah... thats the problem with april... you should head south... Myrtle Beach, SC maybe?

It kind of sounds like Tucson Arizona may be the destination...not sure yet, but it's the top of the list likely.

South Florida is always a good getaway this time of year, as long as you beat the spring break crowd. My wife and I went to Ft. Meyers beach a few years ago right at the first of March. 80 degrees and sunny the whole time, a nice break from the 20 degree days here in KC. We spent a week there, but a few days would have done it as well. I wanted to stay for another few weeks tho!

All the shrimp and grouper you can eat, and they know how to make a good Rum Runner down there as well. Definitely ask for the "floater" with that :)

Absolutely, southern Florida was very nice while we were there a few weeks ago . We had a woman with us for the fishing trip off of Marco Island, and she had a total blast . 'Captain Mark' never let her touch the fish, or bait her hook . Because it was very windy on the gulf that day, we didn't get out of the backwater, so he cut our rate in half because of this, and we got the boat for 5hrs with cap'n, fuel, and fish cleaned and filetted for next to nuthin . Beer-friendly, uhm, 'present'-friendly... we had a blast ! After driving off the island there's a restaraunt to stop at, where they'll cook your catch .

Hey dB-

DON'T GO TO TUCSON!!!!!!!!!!!

I lived there for a couple of years, and the place is a hole!!!!!!

AZ in general is a beautiful place-except Tucson!

If you come down this way, I'd suggest Sedona. It is handsdown the most beautiful place I've ever seen, and I've been all over the country. There are red rocks, great hikes, swimming/natural water slides (yes, even in Feb.), jeep tours, mtn. biking, and you're about 2.5 hours from the grand canyon. There is also some great forest up there as well. The weather there right now, is gorgeous. I went camping there a couple of weeks ago.

Here's a link with some good pictures.

Agree with the Gatlinberg TN thing. AS for Florida, the KEYS man the KEYS.

You can spend 4 days there easy and not do everything there is to do. As well there is plenty to lok at, if ya know what I mean. I can even hook ya up with a ship to do a day sail on, which is very romantic indeed. The shows on the waterfront range from the sublime to the bizzare and everywhere in between.

I do more hiking than mountain biking, but some of my friends go biking a lot. Here's a website that one of my buddies uses for trails all around AZ.

www.trails.com/activity.asp?areaid=10045

When you look Sedona is in between Flagstaff and Phoenix. Sedona is at the bottom of Oak Creek Canyon, so the trails you see for Oak Creek are within a mile or so of Sedona.

Hay dB , if you were still looking at the bay area (san fransico) you might want to think about the Lake Tahoe area, very nice get away and there are a lot of things to do, plus Reno's right there too.

i gotta recommend against tucson too. i drove through there and its just a boring city in the middle of the sand. the most interesting thing was a dennys and my hotel room. i also know someone who lives there (grew up there)and hates it.

It means little to me, my main goal is just to get out of Dodge for a few days...my opinion on that whole area is that, well, it's a desert, that means things are not supposed to live there by design...I want to move further south than MN, but not that far.

If you're waiting till summer, I can highly recommend Glacier Park area. Take a motorcycle tour of the area, its gorgeous. In fact, I could probably give you the names of some fellows who do exactly that: motorcycle tours.

[edit] read your post dB, april will still be too cold, the pass up to the top of 'the hill' would still likely be snowed in. my bad.

yeah but good call man. i have often looked at glacier in those glossy coffee table books. it is HIGH on my list of places to visit one day. i almost took a summer job there one year for lodge staff. just to see the place--its truly gorgeous.
