I have two problems.

One is i have my condensor mic linked into my mic pre-amp (or geetar for that matter) then linked into the mic input on my computer. Now I hear its better to link your preamp into the "audio in" on my computer, but the problem is when I do, I only record left side. It has nothing to do with pan or the software, this seems to be more of a physical problem or a soundcard setting. Anybody know?

Second, I want the cue system in my headphones to work. That means when I'm recording with headphones on I can hear whats going into the mic on my headphones. I cannot find this setting, or figure out how to turn it on.

If your noob, don't reply, cus I tried what your going to say.

to the elite who help, its apprciated and thanks alot.

One: You're trying to record a stereo track! Record a mono track instead, then no problems.

Two: We have no way of telling how to help unless you tell us what kind of gear you have or post it in your profile.

Peace.

MinkusMaz speaks truth... kinda difficult to help without the knowledge of at least the pre-amp and sound card. I'll guess you've got a one channel, mono-out pre-amp, and a Sound Blaster or compatible, so... you want an adapter cable with 1/8" stereo mini plug (computer end) to two 1/4" plugs (pre-amp end), which you most likely won't get with just one cable. The easiest is most likely 1/8" stereo to 2-RCA, then into 2-RCA to 1/4 adapter plugs. Anyway. It sounds like you have something already to get into the computer, what is it? A mono plug will bridge and short your stereo jack on the sound card, causing some odd behavior with the input of some cards...

Your sound card has to be capable of "full-duplex" (I think that's the term) operation, in order to be able to hear while recording. Some onboard and some add-on cards are not capable of this. If it's AC-97, it should be. Depending on your OS, you'll find the setting in different locations, but say "Control Panel" "Sounds" (I forget what it is in Win2k & XP) or "Multimedia" (depending) and click around and see if you can find a setting. Also, back to your input, on my old SB16, if I used a mono plug on the Line-In, I couldn't hear the output on the Line-out...

The Mic-In on your sound card is a pre-amp (piece of cheese), but mono. The Line-In is stereo, no pre-amp, and is the input to use, if you're using your pre-amp, but you'll only get one side, left or right, depending which side of the cable you use...

To add a footnote, many cards claim to be full-duplex but really can only handle one stream in and out, not 12 tracks back while recording 2...for example.
