Tascam 388

Hello everyone. I am looking at purchasing a Tascam 388 and I was just wondering if anyone knows if this model has 8 individual outs on the mixer section. I'd like to be able to dump each track individually to a computer if I choose to do so. Thank you for your help!

even if it doesnt (which i dont know) yo could always mute each channel and record them individually. takes longer, but hey, we love doing this stuff, right?

Good point. I didn't even think of that. I would like to be able to bypass the reel to reel though if I should choose to do so. Flame, do you think I should just look into a board like the M-308 or something? It would be nice to have the reel to reel though...rats. I wish I knew if the 388 had those individual channel outs.

not that i've seen a 388, but the M-208 has 8x direct out 4 subgroups. so i suppose that the 388 could have the outs as well.

It is an 8x8 setup, 8 in, 8 out. Uses 1/4" tape at 7 1/2 ips, kind of dicey since it doubles the number of tracks on a 1/4" tape. However... *WAY* much better than a cassette multi-track, and *WAY* much better than bouncing a 4 tracker to another deck... Tape is getting harder find, though, so if you get the deck, buy yourself as much tape as you can afford (or more than).

Cool. I think that I'm going to go ahead and get one. My friend who has a bunch of recording experience said that it's good machine and especially a good one for learning the ins and outs of recording. Flame you said you have some tape? Is it in good shape? If you're interested in selling, I might be interested in buying if I can get my hands on a 388. Thanks everyone for answering my questions.

It'll use 1/4" on 7" reels, 7 1/2 ips (1800'?). Since it does 8 tracks in the place of 4, I'd say he'd need the highest quality possible for the best track separation, and if he can, steel reels...

I found this link. What do you all think?

Not too badly priced as far as I know especially since I heard that 2 inch tape was going for over $200 a reel.

I got mine from a company in Washington, but I cannot find the link to them (surprise! I'm losing links all the time!) Sweetwater & Zzounds both sell Ampex/Quantegy tape, but watch for the reel hubs! I have to use the little-holed reels, what you linked to is the bigger hub. I forget the correct names for the hubs. It's a bear getting old and forgetful...

Why not just get a Tascam 38? 1/2 inch tape and 15 i.p.s would give you better quality. However, anything below 30 i.p.s. you should have noise reduction for it. 38's are selling for a couple of hundred bucks..... just a thought.
