USB MIDI

Hi everyone,

I have had to remove my crappy SoundDisaster card to make room for my 3rd Delta card. This has left me with no MIDI port. They way I see it, I only have 1 option and that is to purchase a USB MIDI port. Do any of you have any recommendations? Is there any other way to do this like using a serial or parallel port? What should I watch out for when buying a USB MIDI port? Oh ya, can you "daisy-chain" MIDI devices?

thanks

yeah you can dasy chain' 'em, that's what the "thru" port is for....i'd recommend a motu midi express, or microlite....very good and stable.

not all have thru though, so be sure to check. I kknow my us-122 doesn't. Not a bad purchase, though I think there might be better out there.

I posted some impressions on it a few weeks ago here. search for tascam us122

Thanks WYD. One thing, I don't have a "thru" port unless I'm misunderstanding what it actually is. On my keyboards I only have I/O and the same on my sampler. Right now I use the keyboard to trigger the sampler. I would like to connect the "out" to the "in" on the sampler and the "out" on the sampler would then be connected to my PC (somehow - TBD). This does bring up a question though and that is, would the MIDI port function when the sampler is turned off? Otherwise the keyboards would probably trigger both the PC and the sampler.

I'm really "green" when it comes to home recording. Even greener when it comes to MIDI. All that I really want to do is use my keyboards with Reason without having to disconnect my sampler all the time.

You don't need a thru, you can go from in to out, to in to out to in to out...as long as the ins and outs start and end at the desired locations...

Do you know if MIDI ports continue to function when the units are not turned on?

I have an M-Audio USB midi Sport Uno, it seems to work fine, never any problems so far. Most midi devices I've seen don't have a thru port any longer. As long as each device is on it's own channel they only pay attention to data meant for it and pass any other along.

Not sure I understand what you mean about the midi ports continuing to function if the unit is turned off. If you mean when turned off do they still pass the data not meant for them when daisy chained I don't know I've never tried it.

ok in your situation, i'd get a 4x4 usb midi interface, you hook both of your ins and outs and you'll have room to grow if ya need too. you'd be able to route all your midi needs with it cuz it works just like an audio interface, i can configure mine (motu express xt) in any number of ways, whatever i need...that way you can play/record, your midi performance with the keyboard and still trigger or playback your sampler all at once...

i'm not sure if your sequencer will recieve your keyboards midi signal if it's connected to your output of your sampler...try and see though.

and i don't think midi will work without the device turned on, but i bet a THRU port would.

I've been using a Midisport 1x1 (usb) for years with no problems. I just added a 2x2 to keep up with my expanding gear. I plugged them both into a usb hub, and now I've got 3 ins and 3 outs, with no noticeable problems (but it's still new, somethin will come up). The 1x1 only worked with the comp. on and the sequencer program running, but the 2x2 has a nice little bypass button on it that lets you get around the computer when it's off. Coolest part, the sequencer treats them totally separate, so i've got 48 possible channels of MIDI instruments to play with.

I gotta buy some new sound generators!!!!!
