Song - Homesick

Well, you all kindly listened to and critiqued my demo version of this song a few weeks ago, and I'm hoping for some input on my latest incarnation of this song.

This is one of 2 tracks that my friend and I captured in Tulsa last weekend. Well, the drums and harp at least. But, this fulfills my vision of the elements that I wanted in this song: brush style drums and a solo harp. This came pretty darn close!

Anyways, if you care to give this another listen, I'd much appreciate it. There are several things that bug me about it, but you know how it goes with your own mixes: you hear the little things too much and you miss the big, glaring problems.

*listening*

nice feel and over sound...i'm not hearin' anything stickin' out real bad....the vocals are a bit 'edgy' and are pokin' out above the drums and guitar, in a sharpish way. but it's not real bad. just noticable. if you boosted the vocals around 3 0r 4k...i'd come down a hair on it. other than that, it sound just as it should, nice and flokie, and human.

props

First listen...very impressive. All of the instruments (and vox) seem to sit very well in the mix.

I'm especially impressed with the acoustic guitar sound that you got. Please share your secret: guitar, mics, micing setup, effects, etc.

Great song! Of course, this type of thing is right up my alley! I'll listen a few more times and see if anything jumps out at me.

Every things sounds really great except I think the harmonica is a little harsh, I think if you lowered it slightly in the mix and added some reverb to soften it a bit it would really sound good.

Really great song, and you've really put it together well.

Thanks for the listens everybody!

OD, I agree about the harsh harmonica...I've been listening to a lot of Dylan lately, and that's an easy way to get desensitized to an overpowering harp sound :-) After listening to Highway 61 Revisited, no harp could possibly sound too loud hehehe

Jim, this is my first attempt at using 2 SDC mics for the guitar, glad that you like the results. I used 2 MXL 993s, 1 at the 14th fret, 1 just behind the bridge, each of them were about 10 or 12 inches away from the guitar. They went into a Yamaha MG mixer, into the computer, where I added some compression and reverb from the Classic Series VST plugins. Oh, and the guitar itself is my old Alvarez Regent pseudo-cheapie acoustic/electric with week-old strings.

WYD, I think that I'm going to redo the multiband compression on this song...I think that's what's causing the harshness on the vocals (and the harp) because I basically used a preset that squashed the hell out of the song...I'm going to experiment with more personalized settings and remaster the song.

Thanks again everybody!

Great song Tony. I'd definitely be interested in doing whatever you like for that one. Are you thinking steel-string or nylon string? Strummed w/a pick, or fingerstyle? I guess we can either discuss in a new thread or via email (cprewett at kc dot rr dot com)

definately has a serious Dylan vibe working in this tune...which is good! I liked this, honest and forthright music...

The mix works well, I'm not sure if I'd change much of anything. The acoustic sounds real nice and the vox sound fine overall.

nice work on this.
