Mar 02, 2005 03:00 pm anyone can buy nice gear, only an artist can make music :)
Mar 02, 2005 03:52 pm I have visited that board for a year or so and yes, my jaw frequently hits the floor.
Mar 02, 2005 05:55 pm I took a look, and would have to agree with dB's comment. I listened to about ten songs that had been posted there...mostly metal or hip-hop. Nothing compares to the quality of music you guys make on this site!
Mar 02, 2005 06:37 pm this is ridiculous!

Mar 02, 2005 11:13 pm If you notice almost all of the pics feature studios in the "cockpit" config which is the worst setup possible...

Mar 03, 2005 03:05 am i'm glad we aren't all into picture-posting.... almost feels like one big competition. As if there weren't enough if the musician side of things....
Mar 03, 2005 07:23 am If I had posted the pics of my old studio (not that my new one is Abbey Road or anything) the folk on that board would have laughed (man, I recorded under the stairs in a cupboard!!).
However, my whole EP was written/recorded/produced and engineered entirely and wholy from that cupboard under the stairs using less than modest gear.
I AM NAE EXPERT...I want to add that. Please dont take this the wrong way - I am just saying its (as the old addage goes) What ye dae with it that counts!!!! hehe.
So, I am affraid, I'll now carry on working from an unaccoustically treated loft (which is drafty as hell!!), using the gear I have and not care aboot the consequences!! Im sure, most things (to a point) can be gotten around with time, effort and patience.
And, lets not forget musicians have been making KICK *** music for years. I say MUSICIANS as many bands take control of the process like The Beatles...who basically made music with anything and everything...aye - YOU CANNOT WHACK PURE SKILL N CLASS...beats gear...any day.
That all said, I'd still like more cool gear!!!! hehehehe.
Cheers
Coco.

Mar 04, 2005 11:14 am Don't be too quick to dismiss someone's abilities because they have pretty gear... they may know how to use it.

Mar 04, 2005 11:19 am of course, I know of engineers with deep pockets and shallow skill...
I agree with drake though... it seems (at least with that site) that many post to brag about what they have... not to help others. Many of them are quick to judge a modest home recording setup too.

Mar 04, 2005 11:29 am I find the less gear you have the more you strive and do some innovative stuff because you don't have the latest gear. It's definatly nice to have all that stuff but here in the real world is it at all needed? I think not. I miss those days with a four track and a couple mics they are still vivd in my mind.

Mar 04, 2005 12:15 pm Is it all needed? No... not for music's sake.
But most likely these people do this for a living, where they have to appeal to clients who all require different things... so for them it is needed.
Mar 04, 2005 12:29 pm not to mention clients WANT to see all that gear, even though they won't use it, it's kinda like havin' Pro Tools on your business card. just looks professional.
Mar 05, 2005 05:15 pm I've posted there for awhile. I try to learn from everywhere someone has something to share. HRC definitly has a more down home atmosphere.
Those guys can be vicious to one another for sure, and you can be banned for calling Shania Twain a circus monkey, (I didn't do this, someone else did) It offended an engineer that does her sound so he was banned. That's kind of the flavor of the forum.
I think I'm shunned at slutz at the moment for daring to mention I could record my album myself and thinking that big studios are basically not necassary. :) Alot of these guys are the top pros: Dave Martin, Bob Olhsson, etc. They definitly feel threatened by artists doing it themselves.
You might find their big studio closings forum interesting. It definitly gives a different perspective on the home recording trend. It really helped me understand the business of music hearing the insiders talk about the current trend in recording and brainstorming about how to save their business.
It's ironic that it's the gear manufactures themselves that are undermining them. Mackie and Neumann are the first ones to tell the artist "Yes, you can do it yourself". The pros that are using their gear are telling you, "you can't". I've come to the conclusion, you can. It might take more time, but if your ears are good, you can. It might take longer, but it's possible. Knowledge is power. That's what HRC is for: To empower, so you can do.
Mar 05, 2005 07:16 pm Good post Karyn. I lurk in forums like that every now and then, but rarely post unless I really feel the NEED to say something. I just somehow feel that us home people get little respect at places like that because we may not do it "their way" or "the right way".
And all ya'll know how hard it is for me to shut my mouth...but I do it at places like that...
