Suggest a mixer?

Hello all, board noob here.
Name is Evvy.
I'm a vocalist using an Mbox setup. I'm loving the zero-latency record feature but hating the fact that I can't monitor effects this way. So I'm off to buy a mixer and an effects rack to get this accomplished.
Anyone have suggestions on a good sub-$100 mixer? I don't need a lot of bells and whistles, just using a mic and the effects but I do want something that is known for low noise levels, good name, etc..
The 'non-biased' salesman at guitar center is pushing me towards Yamaha. Should I take the bait?
Thanks,
Evvy

A lot of people here use behringer and like them, but honestly don't know enough about mixers in general to really steer you.

And apparently I am the HRC welcoming committee today so uh, welcome to HRC.

Cool, thanks for the welcome.. The board seems a bit dead right now.. Everyone must be sleeping to gear up for the feasting..

Hey ya, welcome to the board. I actualy just got home from a Korn concert with my sons and a friend. But indeed it is time to snooze and then get up and cook the feast.

But agreeing with coolo on the mixer, Behringer has a couple sub $100.00 mixers that are stellar and like coolo said, I am one of those peeps who have been using Behringer for years and love their gear.

If you have a look in the Gearbag section of this site I believe there are several in there to choose from.

Living in Germany, the mixer market is pretty much dominated by Behringer over here. I currently have never owned a mixer, but have just purchased a small Behringer mixer on ebay for less than 30 dollars, which i'm waiting to arrive at any moment. I think it's one size down from the Behringer MX802A that is shown on the studio equipment page here at HRC. Behringers are often cited as being noisy, but their new range is even branded as low-noise (hardly a surprising act from their marketing department) and even these older models (only 1-2 years old) have got nothing but great reviews online...

I have only purchased this as a learning tool toy really... i want to physically learn how to connect A to B etc, as i have no clue. I will gladly let you know what i think of it when i get it though!

Just FYI, the "GearBag" section has been renamed "Studio Equipment"...Noize, keep up, man...:-)

I wouldn't go so far as to call any sub-$100 mixer "stellar" but they are quite good for the money.

Lot's of quick replys, thank you!
The board lives after all! (Not many recording-related boards do..)
So a few positives on Behringer.. Any knowledge on Yamaha?
And neuaddsibly, I am in the same boat as you so I Really don't need things to be perfect as I'm just demo-ing out vocals for now. But I do want to get the most out my $100 mixer budget! So yeah let me know.
And heya dB.. I recognize you from another thread I posted in. Something about partitioning to avoid virus'..
Any reccomendations on a mixer?

You should recognize dB, this websites his baby. hehe. I too would go with a berry. I use a phonics and it sucks, but when I get some cash I'm gonna get me a berry. I just trust these dudes insights and if they say a berry is good, then I'm not gonna complain...

although I do want a soundcraft ghost in the worst way

For under $100 I'd say the best you can do is service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

If you can afford $120 service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear would be the bomb, you'd get two extra sub outs which, in a studio situation, if you don't use them now you'll be VERY glad to have them down the road.

OK, maybe not stellar. But I would rank them best in class for that price range.

I'm using a yamaha mg16/4 (around 280$us) and am very happy with it. very quiet, and clear. I think they have one or two sub-100$ boards, though I haven't looked in a while.

In my research for a mixer, i've heard the same info you'll hear here; berry are good boards, not what you'd see in a high end studio, but great for the home-bound lot. I've read that the yamaha components are better grade and that the EQ is highly recommended, so i went with it.

I would think a good sound card, and good mics will give you better bang-for-buck when starting out.

If you go to Amazon through the link here you can do a search and there will be books from beginner to expert there. If I think of the name of a good one I will post it back here.

Hi Evvy,

I know i'm late but it took a while to arrive and i've harldy had chance to play with it yet...

The Behringer MX602a i bought off ebay for 23 EUROS seems great for my learning needs. It is extremely quiet. OK, it hasnt got loads of channels, but it has an AUX thingie and 2 very good mic preamps, so i might try and shift my audio buddy coz now i definitely wont need it.

If i'd bought new, i'd probably have bought a higher-range one with more inputs, but i only wanted a learning tool anyway, and i believe i got a great deal on this. If i ever want to upgrade, i'll probably get back what i paid for this easily, so dont rule out secondhand!!!

Thanks guys..
I went ahead and got the Yamaha MG 10/2 and it is working for me just fine.
I'm basically just using it to monitor effects while I record vox.
Now I need to find a better effects rack than this crappy hand-me-down ART 'Multiverb LT'.. This thing is so ancient their website doesn't even publish a manual for it anymore.
If anyone cares, here's a link to our first venture into the world of Protools...

It's metal, it's raw and comments are welcome..
