Monitoring sound from delta 44

Hi guys,

I've been using my new delta 44 sound card and have been pleased with its sound. But I realized that each input/output is mono, which I am fine with, but when I monitor out to my pc with the delta 44, it only monitors one channel.
So now I have setup my Sound Blaster Live to use as my stereo monitor so that my delta 44 could be used for recording only. But now I can't here what I'm playing when I record. I can when I play it back afterwards though.
So my question is, does anyone know how I can use my sound blaster live to monitor what I record when I record it?

Thanks,

Mike

you should use your delta 44 for both input and output. each output is mono...but you use outputs 1 and 2 as Left and Right out. start there.

Go to control panel and select audio or whatever it's called (toward the bottom of the list in XP). For recording pick the Delta, and for playback pick the SB. Or you could do what Minkus suggests.

I had this problem when I started with the Delta and recording and realised I needed some form of monitors.

I opted for a pair of Edirols (around £110) they cost me $220 USD, they are not "full scale" monitors but they do give good sound for the price. As I say, you'd be better with Behringer Truth's or something similar (or better if ya can afford it) but your problem sounds like you are using a pair of speakers which allow 1 input which will always be mono i.e. 1 channel.

The other thing you could do is get some form of a splitter to divert the signal to both speakers. Personally, I wouldnt use the SB if you have the Delta (not for recording purposes anyway - its like havin a Rolls Royce for driving to work and an old beaten up banger for the school run)...you wanna use the Rolls Royce for everything!!

Good luck anyway.

Hi again,

I do use a set of pc speakers so that sounds like the problem.
I have been in the market for an actual pair of monitors for a while now so I guess that what I'll go for.
Thanks for the help guys, I really neeeded it.

Thanks,

Mike

i use PC speakers with the delta 44. i run the delta 44's 1st pair of outs to my mixer, and run the mixer to the pc speakers. you could run the delta 44 straight to your pc speakers with some converters at radio shack. the big thing here though is that if you are setting a different soundcard for playback, you're going to have problems when multi-track recording amongst other things. the zero latency deal only works within the delta 44 itself.

Will the connectors at Radio Shack lessen the sound quality much? Because I would be willing to do that for now just so I could save some cash until I can get a good set of monitors.

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, they can make more noise and such in the line, but, buy good ones and it will be lessened, OR, just build a set of cables with the ends that you need. In the DIY section of our tips I have a little article regarding doing that.

I monitor through my delta to the mixer with headphones while recording, and switch soundcards and come out the SB into my pc speakers for mixing and general listening.

Does anyone know what the actual name of the cables I'd need to go from my sound card to the delta?

Minkus...naughty...:-D

utopian, do you mean like out of your SB into your Delta? That would be stereo 1/8" male to dual mono 1/4" male...me thinks

Would I be able to just use two outs from my delta 44 to my pc speakers with some sort of splitter?

I think if you want to go from your delta to your pc speakers directly, you would need a cable that on one side had two mono male 1/4" plugs, and on the other had a stereo female 1/8" plug.
