hi everyone, im new. IM using xp home edition on a PC. One night after the greatful dead show about a month ago i came home to do some recording and went to get on the computer. I put my password in like 5 times and it kept saying it was wrong? Then it just started going into this option mode where it asks me how i want to start and it gives me 4 options like- safe mode, save with command, last know configuration, start windows normally. i tried them all several times and it just goes for like 2 minutes and restarts. i know someone around here has to be a windows wizard, any sugestions before i pay the guy up the street 100$ i dont have??? ive tried everything i know how to do. i know its hard to find a solution without seeing the pc, but maybe someone else has had this problem? thanks in advance.

sounds like maybe a stupid question, but was your caplock key on? You would be surprised how often that happens...

your computer won't bust if you try the wrong password too many times. it won't lock down on you either. just make sure you've got caps lock off.

caplock will just make your whole password cops, and therefore, likely not the right password because your password probably isn't all caps, also, have you made sure you absolutely have the right password and that your keyboard is working...always start with the simplest possible solutions.

Ok well... if you mean "black and white screen" as in where it gives you the 4 options...Safe Mode usually works...but when I have these problems I go to "Last Known Good Configuration" if that don't work then try "Safe Mode"....if it still doesn't work then we go into another set of options. Safe Mode will look kinda wierd but it gets you in. I guess I don't know what "black and white screen" you're speaking of...

If you get in Windows using this knowledge I would try to reset/change your password.

Keep us posted...

Try "Last Known Good Configuration" like Jason said. If that works, reboot and see if it keeps going into that screen everytime you restart your PC. If so, you got what sounds like Windows XP Home is screwy. I would try that first and narrow it down.

Ah, reboots itself...you have a virus, one virus in particular does that, but I forget which one it is.

Run a virus scan...oh, wait, you can't get into Windows can you...yikes...at this point I'd prolly just wipeit out and start over by reinstalling Windows...prolly take less time than trouble shooting for days like this.

It wouldn't reboot until he starts and logs in. That's when the virus causes a buffer overflow, although, by the sounds of it - the poor fellow can't even reach the login screen. :o

If you have your XP disk, I'd try throwing it in the drive and then boot the computer and start from the CD-ROM. When you reach the CD-ROM menu, select to Repair and then choose an automatic repair.

I just finished 2 computers with the same symptons... the partition information is gone. Information can be recovered with something like R-Studio NTFS and a seperate computer with good virus protection. Then a fresh install. I'm not sure which virus it is though.
