I found this super cool plug-in that simulates listening in different environments. It's called Sound System Modeler and is available at: www.bobtailrecords.com/bobtailrecords/ssm.html
You can listen to your mix on anything from a boom box or car stereo to a high end studio monitors. There are even some classic models like the Yamaha NS10Ms.
This thing is going to come in really handy for mixing and mastering!
Has anybody check this out yet?

Jun 10, 2004 01:27 pm Hey there, welcome to HRC.
Interesting concept, modelling speakers thru your speakers...how would one do that without knowing the speakers that the user has...like telling it you have two way with such a horn and such a woofer...hmmm, if it works it'd be cool tho...
I might have to try this out...
Ah, I was gonna contact them about trial version limitations and such, been then, the way it looks, I may as well ask you, since you were the guy I was gonna ask...so, what are the trial limitiations? Do you guys want a review published? If so, I'd be willing to do one here at HRC...contact me if interested.
Jun 10, 2004 01:31 pm PS, if you want to plug your product, don't come off like it's not yours and say "I found this product", just be up front about, that immediately make me think it's a scam of some sort cuz your hiding.
And we also state in the rules that blatant advertising is not allowed, however, are loose on it as long as you don't spam the forum.

Jun 10, 2004 07:15 pm OK, guys. Because I sort of spammed you, I'll give out 10 free unlock codes to the first 10 guys that email me. Sound like a deal?
Admin, we would love for you to do a review of this plug-in and give us some feedback on how to improve it. Email me and I will provide you with a free unlock code. Limitations are 3 models on the trial version with 28 on the full version.
As for accuracy, it's a best guess based on a typical studio monitoring rig. Obviously we can't make computer speakers sound like Mackies but downgrading the sound works pretty well. Same thing with mic modelers. It gets you closer without having to burn 10 CDs.
I would also like to get some feedback on what features everyone would like to see. This is thing was built to make my life easier (recording nut just like you guys). Can't blame me for trying to make a little money, can you?
Anyhow, try it out, let me know how you like it. Feedback negative or positive is always welcome.
Thanks,
Dr. J
Jun 10, 2004 07:35 pm Nope, can't blame you at all...making money is, well, kinda necessary. :-)
I'll drop you a line shortly.
Jun 10, 2004 08:22 pm Sounds like a cool concept because I always seem to have problems with my mixes when I reference on different systems.
Is there anyway way that I could download on my Windows puter than burn it to disc and use it in my macintosh pro tools setup which is where I really need it?

Jun 10, 2004 08:42 pm Dr. J, I will get your site in the links section as well. Look forward to doing the review. That app looks like it could be a time saver for sure. And if it can even save burning a few CD's for checking mixes that is a plus in my book.
Jun 10, 2004 09:04 pm I'm thinkin, if it does what it claims well, between this and Har-Bal there will be no need to buy a second pair of speakers any more...

Jun 11, 2004 12:20 am Looks like that software does pretty much the same as many presets on a program's eq. I know for the programs I use, my EQs have presets that say "hall, radio, telephone, party, live, etc...." Sounds like it's a replication of that so for that reason, I wouldn't buy it. I'll wait for the review.
I still haven't used Har-Bal. I'll try that first before anything since DB lives, breathes, stands, and sits by it, lol.

Jun 11, 2004 12:28 am Well, I just downloaded the demo version of Har-Bal and was somewhat confused how it works. Does it have a plug-in feature or do you open a finished track into it and go from there? Also, the demo sucks. When it playsback, all I hear is static which sucks, lol. A demo is supposed to attract me to buy it....not make me want to uninstall it immediately, lol.

Jun 11, 2004 01:07 am I can't get the plugin to install. Has anyone tried yet. Any help will be appreciated.
Jun 11, 2004 04:39 am The demo is only 8-bit so yeah, it is noisy...that's why they have a money back offer.
They are working on a VST plugin version right now as well as a Mac version. Currently the only version available is a standalone app for Windows. Their priority right now is a Mac, then a VST.
Jun 11, 2004 07:43 am hey dude:D
I like what I've read about it but
I can't seem to get the plug properly installed
I download the sound system modeler
which I install in c:\programfiles\sound systemmoder
and then all I get is an uninstall file^o)
it wont show up as an DXi or VSti in Sonar or Wavelab
and you're support pages aren't working so I thought I'dd ask here:D
Jun 11, 2004 07:44 am LOL never mind I got it
I can be so Dumb at some times

Jun 11, 2004 07:50 am Hey presley, how did you get it to work. I'm having the same problem.
Jun 11, 2004 07:50 am Yeah, I emailed him about that same issue, it doesn't show up anywhere...spill it presley...I only had a couple minutes to mess with it before having to catch the bus to get to work...
Jun 11, 2004 07:52 am it's in the map
BOBTAIL also in program files
Jun 11, 2004 07:54 am Ah, bobtail, I was looking for Sound System Modeler. I'll check it out when I get home.
One thing I noticed right away is that the install path is c:\programfiles\sound systemmoder since he is planning multiple plugins it might be wise to make the path c:\programfiles\bobtail\sound systemmoder and then put all bobtail plugins in that directory.
I dunno, maybe thats just the geek-coder in me coming out, but I like it when companies keep all their programs in one nice neat directory rather than make my program files folder huge...
I can't wait to check this bad-boy out...crap, I just got to work and now I wanna go home...

Jun 11, 2004 07:59 am My faith is restored, ill get it tonight and see how it installs and works with Magix Studio- a good test cause Magix can be flakey with things- and im the only guy around that uses it (im poor)
And making money is important....
And you are no longer a sneaky hobbiteses.
that is all
As you were gentlemen......

Jun 11, 2004 07:59 am MAybe I'm just slow today but what's the map. I copy and pasted the files to everything and still nothing.
I looked in everywhere in Sonar and still nothing. Can you be a little more specific for slow guys like me
Jun 11, 2004 08:35 am Hmmm... I thought I got it ...
I just found the folder where the .dll files were
so I copied them to the pluginn folders
but no succes...
I guess we'll have to wait for jmhester..:D
Jun 11, 2004 08:35 am Ahhh, it does say on the site it is a DXi plugin, so it must be DirectX...DXi, technically I believe is a virtual instrument, while DX are plugins, but none the less, the info is there, I just didn't see it.
Jun 11, 2004 08:36 am dll copying only works for VSTs, not DX plugs. DX, as I understand it, can live anywhere, they just register themselves with Windows as existing and where...
I may be wrong, and there may be differences from plug to plug, but that is how I always understood it.
Jun 11, 2004 08:36 am so How do we get it to work:D?
Jun 11, 2004 08:37 am I'll tell you when he emails me back...he seems to be a cool dude with some good ideas...so I am just gonna wait patiently for a reply, besides, I can't play with it for another 9-10 hours anyway.
Jun 11, 2004 08:40 am bummer
yeah over there where you're at right now it's
8.37 am here in HOlland it's 15.40 PM
Jun 11, 2004 11:31 am OK. I think I got the problem fixed. It seems like my installer doesn't register the dlls correctly. We tested it but obviously not good enough. I put a batch file here:
www.intranetresource.com/...ware/ssmfix.bat
that just basically registers the dlls.
Sorry for the bugs and thanks a million for all of you who are helping us out.
Thanks!

Jun 11, 2004 11:49 am This looks like a great idea. I will check it out next week. But I just have Pc speakers. How will it work with those?
Jun 11, 2004 11:54 am I got it fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience. The dumb installer wasn't registering the dlls. If you download the trial version again, this installer should work fine. Please let me know if there are any more problems.
Mauz,
It should give you a relative idea of how it's going to sound. The Mono feature is really useful to me. Also, try it with headphones. That's one way to get a little better quality without spending lots of money on monitors.
Jun 11, 2004 12:04 pm Thanks a million for all the help on this product!
Right now we are working on the following enhancements:
1. better interface
2. better installer! :-)
3. Automatic balancing (flattening) of the host monitoring system.
4. Modeling of popular speaker systems to allow the user to choose their host system from an available list.
5. Headphone compensation.
If you want us to include other features, just let me know.
Thanks,
Dr. J
Jun 11, 2004 03:24 pm Whohooo I got it working
I'll let all of you know about my first time:P
Jun 11, 2004 03:43 pm Hey...i got it working but the response code didnt work!
Anybody else have this problem??
Also, only have 3 settings and no presets! is this right?
I've emailed the guy so hopefully he will shed some light on it..
Ta
Coco.
Jun 11, 2004 03:45 pm 3 settings is the demo mode.
Jun 11, 2004 03:47 pm yeah I had the same error with the response code
he's looking after it
Nice guy:D
Jun 11, 2004 04:40 pm my code didn't work either but not only that, when I tried to use the demo a little it ended up crashing wavelab
Jun 11, 2004 04:44 pm yeah In wavelab it did the same for me
but it sonar it didn't
Jun 11, 2004 05:58 pm OK, I am going to talk to J. I think he needs to pull this back into beta, maybe set up a forum on his website for testers to discuss the issues and get this thing working...
I can honestly say tho, I feel for the pain...writting code as many years as I have...it ain't ever easy.
Jun 11, 2004 06:15 pm I volunteer to be a Beta tester
Jun 11, 2004 08:10 pm Guys,
Sorry for all the troubles. Seems like we missed ALOT! And, of course, the coders have disappeared for the weekend.
I think we are going to pull this back to beta and try again. Anybody want to help out? Free final product and future upgrades.
I promise that we had no intention of getting you guys to debug our code. We tested the heck out of this thing but it's just not up to standards.
Once again, sorry for the problems and please email me if you want to help with the beta.
Thanks,
Dr. J
