Grrrr stupid monitors

Alright, occasionally my dual monitor system messes up and only one monitor will work, which is a hassle for me being used to running two. I'm using windows xp home and can't figure out any way to get the other monitor up and running again. I've tried starting in safemode, enabling VGA... sometimes it says it's found new hardware but I don't have like a driver disk or anything to install it... when I first set it up all I had to do was insert another videocard, plug in the monitor and turn the machine on, and it recognized the dual monitors and worked fine... but now, zip. Anyone know what could be causing this to be a recurring problem and how to stop it from happening?

The problem is more than likely with your video card, which card do you use? Reinstall those drivers (first checking to see if there are new ones) and set them up again.

Duals are a hassle sometimes...

yeah that's what I figured too... I am not sure on which video card I'm using, I'm running two but I really need to get one with dual output things... so assuming I knew what card I was using, I would just go to the manufacturers site and get teh latest drivers correct?

Loki - Try to find a Matrox G450 / G500 cheap on ebay, that's a rock solid dual header graphics card -- www.matrox.com/mga/products/mill_g450/home.cfm

alright so I have still yet to figure this out, I've run windows in safe mode, in VGA mode and all that and still nothing. I'm thinking of taking the machine apart and reinstalling the hardware and seeing if it'll jump start it like that. And if that doesn't work at least my linux box will have a video card and monitor...

try installing the card that isn't working in that linux box, if it dones't work there either, then you know it died :O(

yeah I think that's what I'll do. Although I'm positive the card works (or nearly positive) because on occasion the monitor does turn on, but Windows doesn't recognize it.

oh, so it's the actual monitor that's not working? do you have an extra you can swap out and test?

no it's not the monitor, it's a problem with windows not recognizing it... at least thats what I think, because on occasion when I start in VGA mood the little green LED lights up for a second and then it's gone. Also sometimes I can move things out of the borders of the working monitor a little, which is odd concidering the second one isn't on
