Mic Preamps

I've been recording on a Yamaha AW16G for the last year and although my recordings have improved immensely from my 4-track days they still seem to be missing that 'semi-professional' sound I hear on other peoples recordings. Its mainly due to the volume and overall impact rather than my mixing (to my ears anyway!).

Anyway, I'm wondering if a mic preamp would help me get stronger signals and therefore a more vibrant mix. Can anyone recommend a good preamp between £100 - £200?

I've been looking at a couple of the Behringer models - the Ultragain T1953 and the ProMic 2200. Can anyone recommend those?

My overall set-up is pretty basic with Shure SM57 and AKG C1000 mics, an Orange practice amp, drum machine and couple of guitars.

Cheers,
Seven Worlds

Yes, the Yamaha has a compressor built in which I use.

Hey, I will have pretty much the same set ep mic wize once I am done, although I am going with a Korg multitrack.

I was looking at the ART TPS mic pre's. They are $139 at musician's friend right now which looks to be in your price range. I am interessted too in what the more experienced among us say.

The more experienced say that if you are going to buy through Musician's Friend, please surf there from a link on this site so we get credit from the sale, it costs you nothing and we make small commission from the sale :-)

Also, yes a preamp and a slight compression may give your recording a bit more powerful and professional sound. I have heard those ART's are good, and ya, at $139 that is a great price, you can get 'em here: service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear Tho I am sure jues will be here shortly to plug the PreSonus, I know him and MANY others that dig the BlueTube service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear and it is only $149

Hi all... new member here. Anyway, I just wanted to mention that I use the ART preamp, and for the money its a great value, though honestly, their base model for +/-$50 is just as good as the higher end model (the only difference being tonal presets and a VU meter on the more expensive version). Aside from the mic usage, it also works great as a DI, especially on bass.

maybe your comparing your mixes to ones that are mastered? maybe you need to look into mastering your mixes?

Thanks for the info.
I'm finding even stuff thats not been mastered tends to have a bigger sound that mine, though I do think mastering would help - if only I could afford to get it done!

Will the preamps mentioned really make a difference to the built-in ones? A few people elsewhere have advised me to look at ones in the £300-£500 category, which is stretching my budget considerably.

Can you use the Focusrite Voicemaster for instruments as well?

But of course.

The name "voice master" is given simply because the EQ settings are geared towards vocals. however, I use it for ALL my tracking needs.

The Single 1U unit contains (in this order)

A Class-A Mic Preamp
A Phase Inversal Switch
A High Pass Filter
A Gate / Expander
A Saturation / Drive Simulator
An Opto Compressor
An EQ (2 fixed bands and 1 sweepable low band)
A De-Esser

Pretty good for 1U :)
