i think experience might be the key in this business. i'm sure any studio will choose the guy with experience and a thick portfolio over the guy fresh out of some school that gave him a degree. sound is an art and like any art you just have to dive in and get wet. make a name for yourself and your reputation will preceed you.

okay, i just read another of your posts and i think i mistook you. so you're trying to be a recording artist, not an engineer. Well, that's even tougher. I think there's a certain degree of luck involved as well as the nessecary talent. I can't help you much there, since I don't want to be star :O) -j

I am not sure what his goal is by reading the post, what role of the recording business are you trying to get into? When it comes to the recording business, school really isn't the answer quite often, it's experience and know how...at least from my experience, I know very few successful engineer that have been to school, session players and such is a slightly different matter, if you know many different styles of playing you can do the job, sometimes the quickest way to learn new styles, and the techniques and scales associated with them is thru school, but not always.

you have to force people to take you seriously, in any field. this is my understanding of life so far. and i am very bad at it.

I dunno if I agree with you there, or at least with how I read what you said, thjough it may not have been the intent.

If you try to "force" I read that as talking yourself up, kind of playing the know it all and forcing your knowledge and skills on people without them necessarily wanting them...that usually ends up being counterproductive...at least that is what I have learned...

yeah it definitely wouldn't hurt to have a demo reel and perhaps a business card with a link to a website with more demo reels :-)

go to shows and hand out cards to bands, place ads in local music magazines, etc.

you have to force them, with self-satisfied smirks and chest puffing. cornering them in elevators, following them home...

actually i just meant that it might be best to take the discipline seriously and really learn what the job's about, then you will necessarily be taken seriously. so many kids in orlando go to full sail for recording, and so many of them end up working at sam ash. maybe they're not motivated enough or maybe the market is flooded, i don't know. i don't think they have a clear idea of where they want to go. i guess is what i mean is: at least for some jobs, there is no 'way,' you have to invent the way. you also gotta find out where the jobs are, and then go and talk to those people.

you are talking about engineering, not performing, right?

db are you really a vikings fan? why?

oh, thats fine, they have had a couple bad seasons, but I am a fan none the less, a fan that bails out when it gets rough isn't really a fan.
