Mixer inputs question

I have a Behringer mx802a mixer that has four mono channels with preamp trim pots. Each channel has both a 1/4" balanced or unbalanced instrument jack and an XLR mic jack. I noticed that the 1/4" is labeled as a "Line In" while the XLR is labeled as "Mic In", but I use the 1/4" for instruments (like bass) all the time.

So my question is, is it okay to use the XLR as a line in as well? If so should I leave the gain trim pot all the way counter-clockwise (off) when I do?
thanks! -j

oh yeah, i have the gain in the centre or slightly higher when necessary, so no worries there i think.

however :

DISCLAIMER...i bodge, this may be a potentially very stupid way to do things. someoen'll know the facts. Jues?

you can totally use the XLR as the line in. the only thing you'd have to be worried about is using phantom power, which goes across the X line.

The way I see it, gain should be set according to the situation. Solo (PFL {Pre Fader Listen}) the signal (if possible) and set the gain so it hits at 0db on the mixer. This means you are using the optimal amount of gain without comprimising headroom. You can then set the channel's fader to suit the mix accordingly.

As for phantom power - this shouldn't be a problem unless you are using very poorly wired mic's.

jues.

i thought the question was whether or not he could use the XLR inputs on his mixer (the same one that i have) for a line source (like an XLR direct out of a bass preamp) rather than a mic.

A preamp is just an amplifier, regardless of what state the incoming signal is in.

Something tells me I better leave the phantom power *off* anyways.

SO then I guess I need to check my mixer's instruction manual to see if it will support a balanced XLR as well as unbalanced.

last resort : read the manual!
