It's dirt and dust and crap. They need to be cleaned or replaced. Try a can of compressed air or something like that, depending on the material they are made from, contact cleaner sprayed in there can work good as well.

After five years in storage, i've noticed that the faders on my Yamaha four track are crakling when slid up and down. What is the cause of this and how can i fix it?
