I've got some side projects coming up soon, but I'm game. Also, Krakli recently made their S3O organ synth thing freeware, but otherwise, I've got wurlitzer type sounds, typical e-piano sounds, and more softsynths than you can shake a stick at.

My most recent synth is TubeOhm's Alpha-Ray, which I decided to plink down the 7 bucks to unlock the effects section of the synth (technically also the only synth I've bought). It is a prettttttty sounding softsynth. And a new version of the Tyrelle N6 is out (U-He, known for Zebra, Zebra2, and Diva) which is a killer freebie. The new version added a chorus effect, which supposedly was based off of Diva's chorus.

Eh, enough on the soft-synths though.

(I also ordered 1 of each of the little korg monotrons. I plan to daisychain them together and/or possibly run my R3 or Miniak through them)

My new mixer and the 'trons should be getting here today or tomorrow. Ordered a 4-pack (5th for free) of those MoreMe headphones for tracking, and those will get here tomorrow probably. I wanted a cheap durable headphone, and those seemed to fit the bill. Sure, they're not senns or AT's or Sonys, but they should work fine for the intended purpose, and I understand they isolate pretty decently.

Just gotta figure out where I'm gonna move my towers of books to make room for the stuff. I've still got mics/stands/cables to order lol. Stands will probably live in the trunk though. :D

@ quincy: Too funny! =)

@ BBM: Can't go wrong with something in the vain of "How many more times" (Led Zep I). Driving blues/rock with plenty of room for all these instruments to join in. Wanna give JBOT a workout, write something along the lines of "No Quarter." LOL!!! I only use Led Zep as a reference cause, well, they pretty much wrote a song that fits every genre of music. Love 'em or hate 'em, they were gifted musicians.

I would be good for adding little bits of production. I'm not a skillful guitar player, but I am pretty good at picking out appropriate parts. What I'm saying is that I think it's probably best to plan on having someone better that I committed to the rhythm/lead stuff.

As for genre, what about a kind of rockabilly swing? I could see myself writing some lyrics and doing vocals over something like that. Be afraid...hah

Has anyone started writing for this? If not, I'll start working on a melody tonight. I'll do some kind of draft with a metronome and post it up if no one is opposed. I'm going to post a file with the click track in with the guitar waveform, so that even if someone can't get the metronome to line up with what's already been done, they can still follow with the click track 'glued' to my scratch track. No excuses then! HA!

After I post the acoustic guitar rockabilly song, that'll give us all something solidly on time to work with. We'll ditch my guitar part as soon as someone steps up with 'real' guitar work. I've definitely decided I want to be apart of this, this time and I also definitely want to make sure we're on tempo...

Did I mention that tempo is going to be really important to me on this project?

@Quick: You don't have access to an URB do you? Would be sweet to get that instrument on the recording.

Is anyone camera shy? If you video tape your take and upload it, my girlfriend could edit it and synch it into a music video. Any takers?

Been away from HRC for some time...randomly popped in last evening and read all about your new collab. Sounds interesting! Having participated in a few legendary HRC collabs, I feel the itch again. Any room for another self-professed hack? I could throw a little rockabilly guitar into the mix, and even some harmony vox.

dB...seriously? Mandolin? Next you'll be running off with the Yonder Mountain String band!

I had the 4shared info saved on my computer but for some reason now its gone. So you'll have to share it bluesy!

@Quincy: I had to google what URB is lol. I've never seen it acronym-ized. No, the closest I have is an acoustic bass that I could play all slappy like an upright. I can even set it up like an upright, I have before just for fun.

That's a great idea Quick, I've played the acoustic bass a few times and I'd love to hear it recorded.

Made some progress on the song last night with Sonny Burgess, a bigsby vibrato, and the twin reverb as my guide. Starting out with some drum flourishes, enough solo opportunities to get everyone musically introduced, and then off into the realm of a 12 bar shuffle with a bunch of callouts.

I'll be on vacation next week, planting a garden in central MS. I'm bringing my Gretsch and the iPad. I'm pretty confident I'll have something worth sharing by the end of next week.

I finished the song last night, and definitely this time. It's not rockabilly, and it was almost doo-wop, but now it's a vaguely doo-wop inspired song. I need a little more practice at it with a metronome but I should be able to post it up in the next few days. Again...you won't hurt my feelings if you'd rather do a more genre centric song. I am not very good at keeping my songs within a genre. I also color outside the lines. I tried, and maybe it will work out as is...

Alright then. I uploaded the song to the bigbluesman 4chan account, sans metronome. It's called "Movie on 2012-04-12 at 22.05.mov". The video image needs to be flipped horizontally but I can't do that through photo booth so if someone could flip it and reupload that would probably be ideal for whoever ends up playing guitar. I think I played it at around 130 bpm-ish. I guess what I'm getting at is that I don't really feel like I have time to re-record with the correct tempo, so if someone could pick up the notes/chords and play to a click track that would be ideal. Like I said, I'm really not a very good guitar player and it gets frustrating really quickly for those with buttery fingers.

There is a much more animated, however poorly performed, video. That will probably end up in clips on our final video. Deon is the only one who has it so far. It's a terrible performance, hah.

I find it hard to keep acoustic performances 100% booger-free. It's like playing nude (tone wise) no creamy distortion to hide behind.

The song has a cool vibe to it. Kinda reminds me of something you'd hear in a movie where the guy is setting up a picnic for the girl or whatever. It gets a little clippy at the end and I couldn't find the bpm but I think it has potential. Cool soaring chord progression. Definitely stoked to see where it ends up. I'll probably get a bass track up in the next couple days hopefully.

Something occurred to me as soon as I posted. It sounds like it has the potential to sound a lot like Sparks by Coldplay. Which is a flarping great song if you ask me! I'd be stoked to work on a song with that laid back chill vibe. Which in retrospect is completely different than the rockabilly sound we started out with. Maybe this can be one on the side or something. Maybe just you and me Quince!

In case nobody wants to look it up, here it is. I love this band...

Yeah, I'm hearing the harmonic similarities between the two. I'm sure once we start laying down the structure and everything (maybe work on extending so we can fit in everyone who wants to be in on it) everything will start falling into place. I'm pretty easy, I'll just improv/comp where needed. xD

I think electric keys will work well with this kinda theme. Maybe a nice creamy Rhodes or Wurlitzer style. Throw in some warm fuzzy bass. And some acoustic, or maybe even clean electric guitars. Keeping it light and fluffy. Or.....something like that anyway haha. :)

Quick's food/picnic reference makes me think we should dub this one Cotton Candy xD I jest! We'll call it cream pie. Okay, no seriously, French Silk? Cookies n' Cream? okay, these desserts that I actually like are NOT getting my brain outta the gutter. >_<

Oh, oh, I know! TIRAMISU!!!!!~~~~~ <3 **** I want one of those now. *plans a trip to the Java House tomorrow*

That's a good point about distortion Quick, I'll try it on my electric this weekend. And yeah I'm certainly interested in collaborating on a project, I've always liked your work a lot. I don't mind redoing this song with you in addition to this collab.

Good point J-Bot, gotta make sure everyone's in on it, but I'm hoping we can keep the structure more or less the same. I still think it's possible. I definitely hear space for Mandolin during the chorus'. During the biggest chorus with all the unrestrained strumming near the end, I'm thinking Deon could do something with that crushing guitar tone he uses in his songs. Still need a drummer, so Hippie's part is there. I agree that a Rhodes E Piano would be awesome in this. Coolo could even rap on this if he gets the inspiration, but anything else would be cool too. I know he has congas or something and if one happens to be in the right key or is able to be tuned to pitch that would probably be cool during a verse. I guess I could go ahead with the guitar recording but move to electric so we don't hear my flubs so readily. There's room for another electric guitar part/tone, and I'm sure BigBluesMan and/or Jim will kill that. Quick on Bass. BH on the mix. I'm think putting doowop vocals in there will take care of any one else who wants to get involved.

Haha J-Bot, no picnic is complete without cotton candy! I'm glad this song is striking you as a romantic song. I don't typically write songs that could be considered romantic songs.

I think that covers everyone.

If you guys want I can program some drums to use as a click. this way I can throw in a fill to help with the changes. Also, I do hear a bit of rap vox and a gang vox chorus... will have to see as things move along.

Anyways, should I put together a quick click track?

I'll play with tempo tonight BH. I'd like to get the scratch track/tempo done before we start the recording. I have a busy weekend but I think this is do-able before Monday. I'll try!

Right Coolo. I probably won't use the version of the video I uploaded in the music video. When I did a music video a few years back the idea was to play the song the way you want it to look and then splice it in with the recording as best you can. Or you could just record the real take like I did here and overlay it on the final arrangement with the others.

I think I'm overdoing my contribution to this collaboration, so I uploaded what I have done so far with hopes that the Home Rec'ers will complete the song. I can keep going if we want, but I don't know if that would be in the collaborative spirit. The file that's kind of a rough draft of where I think this song could go is "MOTORCYCLECOLLAB05292012.mp3". Of course, we could just start over with the vocals if someone else wants to do them. Either way I also uploaded the guitar arrangement+click track as "motorcycleCLICKTRACK05262012.mp3" I probably should have just stuck with the guitar/click track but eh...there it is. Take it or leave it, I won't be offended if we don't keep the vocals. We can also speed up the song too, currently at 110bpm. Feel free to time warp it in the DAW of choice and re-upload if you're going to be the next Home Rec'er to carry the flag in this project. Let me know where I can help.

awesome! looking forward to it! When you're done I'll re-record the guitar parts over your drums so we're both in the same groove. Those big strummed chords at the end are eventually going to be bent up a full step at the beginning of each 1 count with my Bigsby. Sounds kinda shoegazey, seems to round things out at the end.

Just getting started, actually! I was very sloooow on this. Sorry. Click tracks and rough drafts are up for noodling on your parts though. I guess I could kind of outline how I think this will probably play out, of course any of this is open to revision:

1.) Guitar/click track (done)
2.) Vocal rough draft (done)
3.) Drums (Hippie is working on it now)
4.) Bass (Quickxkid)

I think it's crucial to focus on the rhythm section first and get it tight.

5,6,7,8,9.) Redo guitar scratch track to match drum groove (Me), Keyboards (J-Bot), Mandolin (DB), Guitars (guitarjim, bigbluesman), heavy guitar section (Dematrix...I have an idea for you if that's cool)
10.) Redo vocals (me)
11.) rap/conga's (Coolo)
12.) Anything else anyone wants to do (anybody)
13.) Mix (BH)

I'm starting tracking for a 4 song EP this Monday. It includes this song and 3 others, should come in at about 16 minutes. First solo songwriting project for me, and doing free recordings for 3 years has put me into contact with lots of awesome players who are happy to help with favors. It's going to be a wild recording, and I'm actually shelling out some money to do it in a "proper" studio with some great, well maintained gear. Going through a '70's MCI board, Neve's, Neumann's and AKG's oh my! So far I've got players for upright bass, oboe, clarinet, flute, trumpet, alto sax, bari sax, violin, tabla, along with the usual rock instruments. Should be a pretty huge production. I'm a big Zappa fan, I'm shooting for something kind of like that. Wish me luck!

Sorry, yes, we are. I'm just working on it independently as well. I should have clarified. I'm re-using this song for my project. I'm interested to see how the two different versions come together differently.

Gents and Djents,

I may have led you astray. This song has some pretty strange time signature changes and presented some issues when we tried to track drums to it on Monday. You would not offend me if you want to try someone elses tune. If you think you can tackle drums still Hippie I'd be interested to check it out. Or alternatively, auxiliary percussion stuff might be appropriate. Any way this shakes out is fine by me.

It is a challenging piece, I think.
(Yay, look at me not adding anything new to the conversation).

*winces* Ouch. Don't kill the drum heads too badly? xD

It's been a rough year for some of us. It's also been a good year for others. But you know, we take the good with the bad, turn it around, do what we need to do, and keep going. That's life I guess.

Hmmm.....that could almost be a chorus. :P

"Ya take the good, you take the bad you take them both and there you have, the facts of life..."

OK, I just totally dated myself, but seriously, Jo was way hotter than Blair...LOL

Hmmm, maybe what was in my head was something subconscious. :P Or possibly subliminal, lol! I'm sure "The Facts of Life" was still around when I was a kid. We generally got all the old shows since we just had antenna, and network TV. No cable for me growing up, haha.

Anyway, see? I said it could be a chorus. xD

OK guys..... don't hate me here!

I'm probably going to be away for the next couple of weekends, which is really putting a strain on what I can/can't do for this song. I already feel like I'm the biggest holdup at this point and don't want to be 'that guy.' So if anyone wants to take a stab at this to move things forward, then by all means.... do it. This whole separation thing just has my mind on bigger issues and really taking a toll on me. I really do apologize....

Hippie, as always, take care of yourself! This stuff can always wait and is small potatoes in the scheme of things.

If I may suggest, I think we need to regroup and replan this collab anyways. I was thinking we should probably go through these steps to get this to come together.

1) Create a drum track with a basic verse, verse, chorus, verse, bridge, chorus structure... or along those lines. (I could do this)

2) Add a basic chord progression with acoustic

3) Add a complimentary bass line and keys

4) Add lead guitar

5) Write lyrics and track vocals

6) Track live drums

7) Mix and master

8) collect 1 million dollars

Anyways, something like that. Basically it would be a structured jam and everyone could take a crack at any part and then vote for the best version.

Just an idea

Well, if we want to keep Quincy's general idea, I suppose I could create a structure in Jamstix 3, and give it a bit of a shuffled beat. Intro, verse, chorus, outro, or whatever. If there are a lot of meter changes, that could take me some time to figure out in jamstix, well, to get it right anyway.

Otherwise if we want to do something completely different, I can probably just create a basic song structure. Thing is though, Jamstix doesn't really work that well without audio or midi data going through it, and I totally suck at programming acoustic drum tracks >_<

The first thing we did, "Is It Possible" started with my bass track, and I tried to give that a bit of structure along with the drum track, and then Hippie took those ideas, and produced the real deal, and I went back to change the bass to fit better (and to correct the timings) That piece is still up on Quick's soundcloud btw. It turned out pretty well. :)

Otherwise...yeah, someone else can do it, and I can just focus on the keys work. Feel free to do whatever you want. Rock, funk, jazz, acoustic, whatever. :) Plus my Nord Lead 2x will be arriving monday (which is in very good condition, and I got it for a great price! $725 + shipping) B-)
