Hey Crash, aint it kool to see old music gettin new again. Hey flame, I think I got into Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground about, well I forget exactly but it was better then 30 some years ago. Lou Reed has a style all his own, and the V U was definately a band worth seeing. I thin the first time I saw them was at CBGBs. I am glad you like them and are getting into them. And like Crash said, chekc out some of Lou Reed solo stuff.

Good thing about today is young guys can listen to the music their parents were into and think it sounds cool. When i was that age my parents were into Glen Miller, Andy Williams and Perry Como, now I'm not knocking those guys, but rock'n'roll it isn't!

One of the theories is that there is a great divide in history between the 'rock'n'roll generation (teenagers/early 20s in the late 1950s) and the WW2 generation. The world changed, attitudes changed, teenagers got spending power, things became more socially free, morals got looser, attitudes to 'deviance' became more liberal....
and that explains why guys aged 20 now can tune in to the music which happened 30 years ago and think its cool, because the mindset is the same.

On another level, you could also argue that there's nothing new in rock and modern bands just repeat what went before (in terms of image/attitude for Marilyn Manson read Alice Cooper for example, for Slipknot read Kiss, etc, etc).

Now the real 'new' stuff is that which was technicaly not possible in the 1960/70's - techno, house, trance, etc. Unfortunatley it's crap IMHO, but it IS of today, not just repeating the past.

my favorite VU song is venus in furs. that song is in a league of its own. one of the great songs of all time. heroin is also pretty good. its all good but those are standouts to me.

one lou reed thing i didnt get was 'metal machine music.' thats where he set up a mic and recorded guitar feedback for 8 hours, then, i guess multitracked it into an 'arrangement' or something. but then these were the days of warhol, who was associated with the band, and who did a movie called 'empire' that was just 8 hours of footage of the empire state building, without any sound. interesting. preposterous. maybe i should go back and give MMM another listen.

The VU rocks. You guys should check out some tom waits for some more crazy old music. Waits is one of my favorites, a genius in my opinion.

well if you are looking for some new stuff with an older sound there are ALOT of bands taking this path. The shins are amazing. there is a band called OZMA that just put out their sophomore effort last tuesday called "spending time on the border line" which is really intense, very oldschool blend. like a mix if the 60s 70s and 80s all wrapped into one. Koufax goes without saying, they are one of the best bands touring today. and lets not forget MyKungFu. Ive started recording my stuff and will post all my songs when im done. try and give it a listen!!!

Wow, Tom Waits!
Dan,
I think TW is one of the truly greats. I have everything he 's made and listen to it constantly. But Tom takes a little gettin used to at first -then you realize he's a master of lyrics and melody. Kinda like jumpin in cold water. He might be a little too rough to suggest to the younger guys here, but if I were to suggest a couple of Tom's CDs to someone who hasn't heard him I think I would suggest 'Blue Valentine' , 'Small Change' 'Mule Variations' . Have you heard 'Alice"?

You younger guys listening to the old stuff from the 60's and early 70 are very lucky! I agree with Glynb above. There was a huge split in the 60's and the music was just another form of rebellion. But boundries were expanded as well as minds and the music mirrored it. Check out Country Joe and the Fish. I still listen to Yer Album and James Gang Rides Again and anything from Joe Walsh for musical inspiration. Rod Stewart when he was with Jeff Beck and Ronnie Woods. Sticky Fingers/Get yer Ya-Yas out.. Neil Youngs early albums...... geesh the list is of stuff you should listen to at least once is a long one.

Hells boilin over and Heaven is full
We're chained to the world
And we all gotta pull....

Hey Crash, I think you might be on to something there! I think everyone, young and old, has at least a couple of artists/records that they would put on that list. For me, a few records that I think changed my outlook on things a bit...

1. ELO - A New World Record
2. David Bowie - Space Oddity
3. Radiohead - OK Computer
4. Sugur Ros - Sugur Ros
5. Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes

However, not necessarily in that order.

I've been a big Waits fan for a few years now. It's kinda funny that I found this thread today, after I just commented on growlinClarence's likeness to Tom Waits.

It's amazing how much my friends dislike Waits' stuff. I can get one friend to listen to parts of Nighthawks at the Diner, but they shy away from things like Swordfishtrombones. That album absolutely changed my opinion of what is and what is not music. I wasn't ready for it, but by the time it was over, I had to play it again! Alice has taken 1st place in my list of Waits favorites...I think that its the perfect marriage of his style and something that you can sit and listen to from start to finish. Fish and Bird almost brings a tear every time.

Also, if you like the VU, give a try to Clinic. They keep getting compared to VU, although I don't quite see it. I liken their 2nd album to Radiohead's recent stuff more than Velvet Underground.

Crash: what the hell are you building in there? ;)

Hey, Yea Growling Clarence has a great waits voice. Yea, Alice is a great album, very haunting sounding, I get a strong cabaret feeling from blood mony, Swordfish and Bone Machine are also all around amazing albums, and nighthawks show Waits' awesome jazzy side. I consider the man a musical genius.

No Commercial Appeal.

Flame, if you like rock 'n' roll runaways and the whole loaded album, you should get the re-released version. It has the entire album's demos on a second disc. Sweet Jane is raw as all hell and head held high is not overproduced like it is on the original album. there's also some great early versions of some lou reed songs that he recorded like three or four years later. any VU fan should get the double disc re-released Loaded. And that's a fact.

We could all make a list of good old stuff, but I must say it was really nice to see E.L.O. mentioned by blueninjastar. I really think Jeff Lynne is much underrated as a producer and often missed from the picture. When you listen to ELO stuff and think of the work and perfection that went into that production its awsome - just perfection.

If anyone thinks they've done a good production job at home with their home system, take out an ELO CD, listen and realise how far you have to still go! And such nice catchy pop songs too!

OOOH YEAH!!

I just can't get over that Guitar work man.
Just the fact it's so damn fine and so so effortless.

Not many people seem to like it but maybe they're not listening to that Guitar go!!

I've also got the second Seahorses album, it was never released and it's taken straight from the recording studio.

I got it through a mate over the net in Ireland.
I'm not sure how it originally came out, probably through someone who was working in the studio as it's an unfinished product and not mastered.

If you'd like let me know.

Thinking about this... a thought struck me that the Velvet U's early stuff was very basic in terms of musicianship. Which just goes to show that 'skill' isn't the be all and end all when it comes to creating distinctive music!

There's hope for me yet!

im not an amazing musician by any means..i know my way around a rhythm, and i know what i want - but achieveing it is a different matter!

if youve got a good tune though, at the end of the day, you can get away with not being jimi hendrix on guitar when ya play it...as long as it moves someone i think its cool!
