Snake question

My band uses an analog 32 channel mixer. We have a 150' 32x8 snake and it is a heavy nightmare. Last year we hired a pro audio company to do sound for us and they had a snake that was firewire or cat 5 or some such cable that was very small. Of course they went into a an Allen & Heath digital mixer. Here is my question. Is there a way to use such a snake for our setup? Would we have to convert to digital at the stage and then back to analog at the board? Or am I stuck with the python until we join the computer age? If such a solution exists, where would I look to purchase the necessary gear? Thanks.

As far as I know, until you enter the digital realm, you are stuck with the big ol' heavy snake because you will need a lead for each signal.

There are a few companies out there making digital snakes that convert the analog to digital, and then back again.

One of which is Aviom.

www.aviom.com/Applications-2/Digital-Snakes.cfm

The other is Whirlwind

www.whirlwindusa.com/esnake.html

Yet another is Roland

www.rolandsystemsgroup.co...snakes/overview

Now, here is the kicker. You could buy your whole sound system (Soup to nuts) 5 times over, and still not come close to the price of a digital snake.

The price range is between $8,000 - $45,000!!!! And this is a very much you get what you pay for device.

90% of all digital snakes bring the signal to your board @ +4 dB. (Line level) So, it's a hot signal. Plus you lose your pre amp on your board. The pre amp is now in the stage box. And it's the pre amp of the manufacture that you go with.

This is why I didn't even list a company called Light Viper. They make a Fiber Optic snake. And tell you right off the top that they are not a "Pre amp" company. It's the heart and soul of your system, and they are not a pre amp company? Plus the price starts around $35,000.

If you want to go this route, you better have a lot of money!

One other company out there that I forgot about is EtherSound.

You don't even want to know their prices.

Yikes! I think I'll just hire a weightlifter to cary the snake. Actually it seems like a good reel with large wheels on it is the way to tame the beast. Any suggestions on that front?

I have four of them for sale here if you want.

I don't know the price off the top of my head, but, if you are interested, I can find out.

$50 + shipping.

Also, you would have to put wheels on them. When we used them, we would put it on top of a road case. To either reel it back in, or to transport.

You can call my shop tomorrow.

It's Bauder Audio Systems.

215-675-9000

The person that will answer will be a guy by the name of Mark Brooks.

Tell him that you have contacted me, and that Me and the owner (Rick Bauder) know about the sale of the reel. And that Rick set the price of $50.

Or if you wish, I will be in at 10:30 EST. And you can just ask for me. But, Mark is our guy in charge of sales. And he is in at 9:00 am. Give or take a few minutes. And that is also EST.

Hope to hear from you tomorrow!
