Is it possible that I need an impedance matcher?

Is it possible your soundcard only has line out (for speakers) and therefore you are actually trying to record to the line out jack of your sound card. Which of course would explain why you aren't recording anything.

hmmm, seems like it. Unless someone here knows how to jerry rig your soundcard to change your line out to a line in. I have no idea if that is possible.

Both Edirol and M-Audio have USB audio interfaces. They are both available at Musicicans Friend. I have used the Edirol with a laptop and it works splendidly.

if you watch eBay for a couple of days you'll find an M-Audio Delta 44 dip under $150

I think Jamie's ebay suggestion is a good one. I picked up a Delta 66 for $182.50 doing the ebay thing (that's not all I got). I'm sure you could find a Delta 44 or Audiophile for under $150 if you are patient and tenacious (give yourself a couple weeks to find one, then pounce right before the auctions about to close). But beware, I've found that ebay can be addictive indeed.

Unless you need portability, or your home studio is on a laptop, you should get an internal card. Faster datatransfer and higher performance generally speaking. USB audio devices are for peeps on the go.

Agree with both dB and jues. USB audio interfaces are really for portability. I personally would not run one on my studio PC. You really are better off waiting for a Delta or whatever.
