The worlds weather is going nuts.

im not up to speed on what's going on in the States, but i know you guys are having bigger freezes and more wild weather.

In the UK there's more mass flooding and freezes.

and over here atm...well we got hellraising bushfires in Vic. with 46 deg. Celsius wheather, accomponied by mad angry winds that just, and still is, torching every town in its path.
Death toll is over 200.
it went from 46 to under 20 degrees C. in two days and is now cranking back up again.

then you go about 2500 kms up to the top of Aus. in Queensland and there is mass flooding which is kinda unheard of at least up till a few years ago.

point is, we are either breaking records in weather stats or we are all coming close to it all over the world.

The World is definalty going mad for some reason all of a sudden in the last few years.

Is this all becuase of Global Warming?
Or maybe its far more advanced than what we thought.
If you believe in it or course.

im sure everyone has different opinion on this.

I know... it's quite sad. Especially what's happening to the walruses.

Very sad indeed.

I do find it somewhat funny though, that I get choked up over this much more than any human-related life-threatening drama. This one just tears me right up. : (

I think it's in part do to the increased media coverage of everything in this relatively new era of instantaneous news coverage all over the world, it's not that some things are that much more frequent, it's just that we hear about it more.

Last I heard the world is now entering a cooling trend, so global warming is a non-issue, now the battle cry will be an eminent ice age in coming years, Gore will need to change his speeches.

That said, yes, the world is still going nuts on a general level.

Cooling trend? Woiuldn't that be nice. Hang in there walruses!!!

Cooler is better, but an ice age is another story. Its prolly generations away, but just the same, this will be a VERY different place if that were to occour.

Well, wasn't it just 30 years ago or so it was a battle cry of a impending ice age...in the 70's somewhere? What that tells me is that people are alarmists and have a hard time accepting things go in cycles...natural cycles, such as basic climate shifts, business cycles, such as feast and famine in the economy...it's nature...

How many doomsdays will we have to face in a life time...ice age, warming, y2k computer crashes, millennium end of the world, 2012 mayan calendar end of the world, the list goes on...and there is always "science" and "proof" behind all of it if you really, really want to find it.

If you wanna buy that new guitar, the checkbook always balances for you to afford it...

People are alarmists.

I live around an Ive League University. And in talking to some of the professors, they claim that there is a balance that is happening right now.

They stated that with the melting of the polar ice caps, that the oceans have more surface area to absorb the CO2 in the atmosphere. In combination with what they reffed to as global dimming. Which is more dust partials in the air that block sunlight. Have created a small balance that is reducing temps.

They did express another concern. And that was the desalinization of the oceans. According to this one professor that I did sound for, the oceans are having the amount of salt reduced by the melting glaciers. When the oceans get to a certain point of less salt, the heat exchange stops.

What that is, is when salt water gets warm, it sinks. When it is cold, it raises. Revers of what we know in the air. It's called up welling. Now this also is responsible for the ocean currents. When the oceans salt level drops enough, the currents will slow to a craw. From what I understand from his speech, this will bring the UK and Europe to a small ice age. Sice the currents are responsible for bringing warm water to the UK coast. Without that warm current, the jet stream gets affected. And the warmer air does not make it to that region. Which could bring about a mini ice age there.

I am not saying that this is definite. But it sounded to me that it could be plausible. There was some other factors about clouds and jet trails. I just liked the idea of our Earth being able to mend it's self.

Very interesting, when I heard of the melting glaciers, salinity levels actually did cross my mind, but since oceans are so vast I figured it'd take a lot to have much effect, I didn't consider temperatures impact in that tho...fascinating.

His speech came after the collapse of the Ross ice shelve, and the major melt of the Greenland coast. Apparently, this was enough fresh water to cause this scenario. I don't remember what the percentage was of salt to fresh. But, I don't believe it was all that much.

I used to keep salt water aquariums, while obviously that's a smaller scale, it is amazing how delicate that balance is...and how much salt we are talking about...I mean, it's A LOT, and very little deviation can have terrible effects on the inhabitants.

I don't recall the '30-year ago' ice age scare, dB. But yeah, alarmists we can be. It seems that if some peoples lives don't achieve a 'reality-based-television-show' look, and feel, they're not happy with it.

Someone should market a tiny box, that can project high quality audio samples,(THEME-music, and sound effects) loud and clearly. It would need to be very small, and sound very good. Then, all these reality-bending drama-queens will be able to enter any room with their very own theme music! Ya'd sell millions of 'em!

Yeah dB, those salt water tanks can be friggin' beautiful! Very interesting, too... but as you said, delicate. Not something to simply jump into without some successful freshwater tank experience... which is why I didn't get into it... couldn't keep a regular tank from being decimated. = p A good friend of mine that had a saltwater tank had some strange/interesting stories of his populations fish-dramas. It seems they are not as 'boring' as your freshwater breeds.

wish i didn't keep getting logged out of here. don't know why this is still happening...

anyway, climate is extraordinarily complex, to the point where all of us--all of us--are forced to side with our favorite 'pop reduction' of the science behind it.

the salinity thing rob was referring to: you can read about it by googling thermohaline.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermohaline_circulation

it was a key plot point in that one climate change disaster movie (which sucked).

you will fail if you try to determine what's really going on.

the best we can do is keep our eyes open. i gave up on the GW debate a few years ago. credit to the righties: they fought for a perspective that was actually being blocked for a while there. at the same time, not enough people appreciate how complex this all is. i still see people saying 'hey! it's cold today! so global warming is bullshit!' gotta move beyond that, peeps.

it could be that the people in the 70s were the alarmists. the amount of data that we have has definitely increased, so the two eras are not really compatible if you want to make snap judgments.

hell, i'd be happy if people would just drop those from-the-heart analyses and just get comfortable with not being 'sure that i know what's up.' if that happens, things are good. keats called this 'negative capability,' and if ever there was a scientific issue that called for it, it's this one.

I with ya there dB about the media.
man they make me so mad!

what will stop them in their quest for world domination?

i think they should be jumped on in regard to the **** they stir up.

they call the shots with so much.

If a stroy is calming down and they havent got enough out of it, theyll stir the pot up again by insinuting, indirectly, a possibilty of allegedly accusing someone with undisclosed info from who, wishes to remain anonymous.

now i dont know if that really makes sense, but hey, there's a story in that BS alone, so lets milk it.

I saw that slow down current thingy on TV some years ago but yeah I'm still scraping the global warming off the windscreen. The other day a polar bear came into the pub and ordered a coke, the barmaid asked "do you want ice in that" the bear looked up at the optics for a few minutes then said yes.
The girl asked "why the big pause"? Hey I'm a polar bear! :)
