Hi, does anyone have any idea how to use vst instruments with sibelius 2 on a pc?, as I would like to use my edirol orchestral vst instrument to provide my sibelius sounds. I think i have to use a vst host or something but I can't find anything like that. Any ideas would be great.
thanks

Mar 23, 2003 09:27 pm Yeah, I read every trade mag out there, and I have never heard of it either. Is it freeware or something.

Mar 24, 2003 02:01 pm Sibelius?
I'm amazed you haven't heard on it, it is probably the best score writing program avaliable, similar to programs such as finale but a lot better, its the leader in its market. I guess if you don't use notation programs you may not have heard of it and it is a bit pricey, around £400. I don't know what that is in dollars, but heres a link to the US site..
www.sibelius.com/cgi-bin/home/home.pl
It uses general midi sounds to play back the notes which you input, and I wanted to change it so it sends its output through something like cubase or a vst instrument host.

Mar 24, 2003 05:56 pm ferris, I have gone through what information I could find on their website, and it doesnt look to promising. Their tech support was not much help either. It appears as though they do not support VST or DXi instruments at all. The program only allows you to choose the windows midi port which is usually the game port of a sound card. they give you the option of either using your onboard Gm soundset on the card or going out through the midi port to an external synth. My suggestion would be to look for a Roland SC-88 or myabe a Korg Wx-2 I believe is the module number. both of these units can be had on the used market fairly cheap, and contain pretty vast sound sets.
And yes, last night it did not ring a bell, but I am familier with the program. I use Sonar XL and use the notation software available there. I do alo use finale.

Mar 24, 2003 07:29 pm I've never used Sibelius, but I once had a similar problem in another notation software program. Possibly you could save your score as a midi file and then open that file in a program that does support VST instruments and get that program to play back your score. I guess you'd have to buy another program then, and you already dropped a pretty penny on Sibelius, but it's just a suggestion.

Mar 24, 2003 07:48 pm Evening all.
Good news ferris, there is indeed a way for you to use VSTi instruments in conjunction with Sibelius (and just about any other program that uses the General Midi standard). All you need is a small program called...
Hubi's Loopback Device Version 2.6a members.magnet.at/hubwin/mlbk26a.zip
This program will basically create up to 4 virtual MIDI ports which can be used to send MIDI data from one program to another (eg: Sibelius to Cubase) - no cables or anything are needed, hence the name "Loopback". You would set it up so that the Sibelius Addresses one of the Loopback MIDI ports which in-turn, the input of which is fed into Cubase (or any other VSMIDI sequencer) which has that channel hooked up to your desired Softsynth. That's possible a little confusing, here I will draw it...
Sibelius MIDI Out -> LOOPBACK -> Cubase MIDI Tack -> VSTi Input
Hopefully that should all make some sense.
Hubis can be a little difficult to install and run, however I located a site which has a very detailed step-by-step installation and usage guide:
Computer Music Article on Hubi's Loopback: www.computermusic.co.uk/t...tsynthseq/2.asp
Good luck and happy soft-synthing :)

Mar 24, 2003 11:17 pm Oh jues, how could I be so stupid. I completely forgot about HLD. I had never tried it with notation software before, but I have used it in many other apps. and it works great. I dont see why it wouldnt work unless Sibelius wont see it. There tech guy told me the software only recognizes Windows supported midi devices, ie:MPU401 and the like. But I have gotten HLD to work in some wierd apps. so I dont see why it wouldnt work.
Great thinkin jues.

Mar 25, 2003 02:50 am Theoretically Hubi's will work with anything that supports the addressing of MIDI ports because of the way the LoopBack device is installed.
Very clever bit of sotware coding.

Mar 26, 2003 12:30 pm maybe i have to delete the mpu 401 midi thing or the audigy thing. I'm using an audigy, and an edirol pcr 50 controller keyboard which has drivers for its usb connection. Maybe theres just too many drivers?! i'm not too clued up on hardware conflicts
