Dec 07, 2008 07:26 pm oh, ok, i so its more a protection/noise thing?
i guess its best to always use it then.
thanks Noize.
might spend the rest of today getting to know this new pre, done a little bit on it, but not much. any cool tips for pre usage?
Dec 07, 2008 09:51 pm Noize is dead on here. Transformer coupling removes any DC from the circuit. And allows only AC to pass.
In high end pre's, this is used to lower the noise floor on the input. It's put in parallel with the input IC.
It also reduces the input impedance. Therefore reducing the noise.
Here is an article that explains some of it.

Dec 08, 2008 11:07 am Tad, I have a wonderful animated GIF for that, but it's not apropos for this site.

Dec 08, 2008 01:00 pm Hahaha Herb. I did a Google image search in the hopes that I could accompany my post with a visual aid. I only found 1 pic and it, too, was not appropos for this site. I was hoping for something more "R" than "NC-17".
