Nov 22, 2008 04:23 am I think it's pretty awful... very harsh, stale and boring. ... not as bad as metallica though...
Nov 22, 2008 05:38 am i'm not a fan of it. there are a few moments i like, but...you know.

Nov 22, 2008 10:45 am I'm a big GN'R fan but not the new GN'R.. Axl's voice is ok, but the rest of the backing band is pretty soulless.
I've also heard the demos that leaked in 2006 etc. and there are some songs I like (Scraped, Catcher and TWAT) but the songs have been layered and twisted so much that it's over the top. IMO it would benefit alot more of scraping the songs down to the base of the songs, all the fancy lines that are all over the place don't add anything and it's just a struggle to listen too. I don't like the noodling weird solos, riffs aren't that great compared to old GN'R and the production is just bad, very muddy. You'd expect after 15 years and millions and millions of dollars to get something better then this.
Also what's with all the soppy ballads? It's too much ballad and to less rocker.
I ain't a big Velvet Revolver fan either but there cd's rocked more. I'll just keep continueing listening to Izzy's solo stuff (each year he releases an awesome new album) and Duff's Loaded project which has just released an EP (Wasted Heart) and is gonna release an LP (Sick) in March 2009.

There's the good GN'R related music ;)
Nov 22, 2008 12:10 pm I liked Appetite, actually, respect it as one of the great rock albums of history, I thought they went downhill from there. I heard the title track of Chinese Democracy this morning, I was totally prepared to hate it, but actually, it really caught me, I like it.
I am looking forward to hearing the rest.
Nov 22, 2008 02:50 pm looking forward to hearing your opinion of the rest of it.
there's one vocal line in the album which made me laugh out loud. that's never happened before. who can guess which line that was?
Nov 22, 2008 04:21 pm (db, the album contains a lot of ballads)

Nov 22, 2008 08:56 pm Ya, I'm not impressed at all by it so far. It has its moments for certain but it ain't no Appetite and probably never will be even close.
I'm really bumbed as the band is now made op of some half decent players including one Tommy Stinson who happens to be from here and was a friend back in the day and was the bass player for a little big band known as The Replacements. Otherwise known as the Matts.
But I digress. While I do like the title track as dB stated it is a bit over produced as are the others I have heard so far. It would do well with fewer ballads and less over the top production stuff.
Time will tell I guess. And ya, I await dB's criticue of it as well.
Nov 22, 2008 09:36 pm i actually like me some gnr ballads. but in this batch i can only say there are some 'moments.' little hints of what a song might have been if it had only been done differently. chord decisions, melody decisions, sections decisions, and instrument choice, etc. also sometimes the singing style. i still can't believe that one line. if this album had been perfect in all other respects but still contained that one line, i would not know what to think. that line is that weird to me.

Nov 22, 2008 10:09 pm I'm at a loss to think of what line your talking about yet forty. I'll maybe hit myspace and listen to the entire stream to see if I can figure it out though.
Nov 23, 2008 12:57 am haha cool, yes take a guess
Nov 23, 2008 12:58 am hint: its not the lyric

Nov 23, 2008 03:00 am Is it on Sorry or Shackler's Revenge?
Nov 23, 2008 03:10 am it's in sorry
shackler's revenge has a great chorus, i think, by the way. i don't like the rest of that song, but that chorus is great to me. although what the hell is a shackler?

Nov 23, 2008 06:50 am Well, Buckethead came up with the original music idea for either a game or movie, can't remember which, but it was called Shackler's Revenge. But then that project got cancelled.
Nov 23, 2008 04:40 pm I heard one other song on the radio this morning that started with some weird synth and some higher pitched choir type vocals, I thought that song sucked, not sure what the name was, really a boring tune tho.
Nov 23, 2008 06:20 pm did buckethead write the chorus to that song, too? there's a lot of good pop maneuvers happening in that chorus. like five different tactics.

Nov 23, 2008 06:31 pm dB, your talking about There Was A Time. And yes, it sucked. Again too much crap going on that doesn't need to be there. The song after that one Catcher in the Rye sounds like it could be exactly the same song.
OK, I honestly tried to sit through the entire thing streaming on myspace.
But honestly the sound is so overbearing on everything that I had to skip over them before they could finish.
My honest opinion is that this is a slight bit better then Metalica's last effort, but only by one nano bit.
So far, If the World appealed to me because of it being a lot less crowded and over done then the rest of the schlock on there. But it too pushed the limit for a few brief moments during the song.
I guess Scraped almost started to appeal to me as well. It almost sounded like GN'R of old, then that went away after about 6 seconds.
I can say for certain I will not buy this album now. Not even just to say I have all their stuff. Cause it ain't worth it, unless someone gives it to me. Even then I won't be listening to it.
And forty, your right on about the chorus of Shacklers Revenge, its interesting feel wise.

Nov 23, 2008 07:42 pm OK, now to make this really bad.
A friend of mine that is a producer of several music critic or talk shows called and twisted my arm to tune into tonites show on The Current.
They are absolutely trashing Axl for this ting called Chinese Democracy. They are playing the cuts and just tearing them apart.
Nov 23, 2008 08:39 pm is it streaming online? id like to hear the show.
by the way the line that made me laugh out loud was 'but i don't want to do it' in the song 'sorry.'
chuck klosterman didn't know what to make of it either. his take on that line is funny:

Nov 23, 2008 08:47 pm Its over now, but I'll check to see if there will be a link to a podcast version of it. Its usually in mp3 format if there is.
I'll check the other link out in a bit. I'm try to get the new surfbox set up and ready to go in here.
Nov 24, 2008 11:42 am The best thing to come out of Chinese Democracy so far IMO:
And while we're on the subject, a new favorite on the "(xxxxx)-Shreds" type VDO's...

Nov 24, 2008 12:00 pm Have not heard that much, but one song I heard on local radio was horrid, the singing seemed so off key at times too.

Dec 02, 2008 04:07 am My Mrs is a GnR fan and she really likes it, I think its OK, far too over produced for my liking... It really sounds like he had far too much time to think about each song.
Some of the solo's were playing all the right notes but where was Slash's Les Paul sound?

Dec 08, 2008 03:05 pm I still haven't actually heard the album, and I'm not exactly sure if I ever will unless I walk into a room and its already playing.
I just discovered Chuck Klosterman through a friend and I just started reading "IV" yesterday. So when I saw that he wrote a review of Chinese Democracy for The Onion's A.V. Club, I had to read it. It's certainly worth a read:
www.avclub.com/content/fe...sterman_reviews
Dec 08, 2008 03:09 pm I have still only heard bits and pieces. Overall I am unimpressed, but there are moments of actual music in there...I do think it was grossly over-produced...but that's Axl...nothing exceeds like excess.

Dec 08, 2008 03:45 pm OK, he lost me about half way through the review.
I still won't purchase it.
The only good track on the disc after a few listens is Better. It is the only thing I find easy to listen to and that has some sense of going somewhere other then as dB stated the excess of Axl's mind.
