Is there any way that you can get into a music shop to give them a listen? It really is about how they sound to YOU.

Well if you need the bottom end the toss up would be between the 8" drover version's of either the Events or the M-Audio units. The Events being the higher end of the 2 choices there.

BH, I just picked up the previous model of the BX8a as well. Used of course since they are actually for out in the room with the drum set up to avoid using cans. A pinch over $200. And yes indeed they kick some major booty! I was surprised that they did sound that good.

M-Audio BX5a's here, nice monitors imo. With the 8's you would have a nice frequency range where at times I desire a Subwoofer.

I was looking at this for suggestions myself, any reasons that the KRK were not mentioned by anyone? Just wondering if it was due to negative points or just that the others had lots of positives.

Hey Blues, only reason I didn't go towards the KRK's for him is the style of music he is doing would need a bit more bottom end then the 6 inch driver's may provide.

As most know I use KRK and simply addore them. I have a pair of K-Roks and they do dandy in this room. I went through too many pairs before settling on these. I dread the day I build a bigger room and these might not work in it. But then again they probably will. If I were to buy newer ones for the room I would probably opt for KRK again.

i got the krk rockit 8 ones...there huge..and extemely loud...buyt the imaging and sound is incredible..i played them next to the m audio bx8a ..the maudio has a hollow thin sound to them...almost tinny.......

but i think the krks bass is too boomy for my situation and i may have to take them back,i have the volume all the ay down and i can still hear the bass on the third floor..is there anyway to soundproof to stop that..or can any1 suggest monitors with good bass responce that arent so boomy

You might simply need to add some absorbing material in the room. THat can be anything from blankets to pillow's to a bookcase with stuff in it.

On the BX8a's you might have had the cut switche's in the wrong places. That can make them sound very thin. There is a bank of switches on the back of the units that will cut certain frequencies and that is what I would guess made them sound the way they did.

Ya, the rockwool will help some but it is not a real bass trap. You may need a bit more absorption in the room to tame the bass a bit more. You can also look on the back of the KRK's to see if they have a bass cut switch and try that as well.

That is the main reason I like KRK. They project a good bass in rooms that may not get a good response. But that is truly the nature of a speaker that size, huge bottom end.

i've got a pair of Event 20/20's that are about to go on the market for around 600 if you're interested....kept real good care of 'em, i'm in a bit of a money pinch though.

i love them, and have had them for 6 years now, never a problem, so i'd lean twards the TR's if ya want new.

I've heard much good about Event stuff too. I was looking hard at them when I was researching, but a closeout deal on Tannoys swayed my decision.

I was recommended to a set of ADAM A6's or A7's i think they were called (powered). Anyone used ADAM's before?

Adam's are the Shiz! For me anyway. I got to listen to some A7's at the local Sam Ash. I'd say get a sub to go with them, but I just like to feel my mixes a little more than others I think.

For a near field they are great. They have a very balanced and flat sound, maybe a pinch of brightness to them but that is usable in most rooms with good absorption. I prefer the A7's as they do not really need a sub with them, but if you are mixing hip hop or the like you might find a need for a sub.

They are a little higher priced for what they are, but not too far off the path.

I can get a pair of Adam A7's for $1500-$1600 AU. Reckon you might as well go the whole hog for true sound and frequency response. I guess for the majority of us that dont have a acoustically great studio environment (like myself) and have one that is very absorptive the Adams would make a great set of monitors. Personally (I dont know about others) I dont know why you would be mixing any other place than 'near' the monitors or your computer. Just a quick query, when would someone need something else than nearfield monitors?

Honestly, I'd go with some less expensive monitors and tune your room with the money you save. 'Cause you can have the best montiors in the world, but if you're mixing in a cathedral or there of, it still won't sound as good as it should.

I'll simply say they are a respectable monitor. But with a drawback to them. They have a more home stereo type sound to them then most nearfield monitor's do. They can be a bit bright, which is OK if the room needs that type of sound.

They are a world away from the A7's though if you are comparing. Not even in the same league.

I have the Tannoy Reveal 6 Passives myself. Noize is right about the brightness too. I remember when I first got them, I ended up hanging a sock over the tweeters. Oh, and to tame some of the bass since the ports are rear-facing, I stuffed a pair of socks in the ports. :P A bit ghetto yeah, but you make due with what you have. After a couple months they did finally even out pretty well and I took the socks off the tweeters. Still stuffed the ports though, since my current room is a bit boomy. Need to fix that. I got a good deal on em through e-bay. New speakers at $370 for the pair. I think they used to retail at $450/pr at zzounds.

If/when I can ever save up enough to upgrade (probably not til I seriously consider starting my own studio, which is a fairly long ways off yet) I'm thinking of upgrading to some Dynaudio BM6A's.

IMO, I'd say the Tannoys I have work well with a medium (master bedroom size) room. And they work well with my ART SLA-1 amp.

Unfortunately, my room at the new place is a little smaller, and I don't have much absorbant materials yet, so they sound just a smidge boxy in my new apartment. I need to get some book cases and curtains in here. :P

Right now I'm glad I got those ATH-M40fs headphones. Pretty good for checking my mixes with a second opinion right now.

Maybe an idea for the site would be to set up a gear review page like harmony central or something. It would save people posting in forums and can get to this kinda info easily. People could basically give a score outta ten for various aspects and comment on things on each of the gear. Let the revolution begin...what do you think dB?
